_Eternal dilemma of an SEO professional. Since you are there to build links, you have to think about building links and this is exactly where the problem creeps in. Rather take a different approach here. Think like a general user. Would you love to see your website listed in that directory? Do you believe that that the directory in question would be able to drive some traffic to your website? If the answer is yes, go ahead mate. Get your website listed there. Google or no Google, your website is going to get benefited at the end. _

When I said " good directories " I meant http://www.seomoz.org/directories/ Do you think these directories will cause Penguin signal to be triggered ? As of my 2nd advice, do it on the right pace. Few factors need to be determine how much to do per x time. Obviously I will agree that directories submission you can find on commercial seo tools will trigger Penguins signals and one should avoid them. Are we good?

Mr. Singh didn't say what "Directory submission" he meant. There are very good directories that we have to use, anybody disagree?
Regards the other part of "day limit" for Directory submission, the pace is all based on two factors:
- how many links and their quality you have now?
- can you keep the same pace overtime month in, month out?

I more or less agree with EGOL. Directory Submissions are a thing of the past and are likely to get you in trouble nowadays. Getting backlinks is becoming harder and harder everyday. You need to diversify more and make sure that all those links to you look as natural as possible. It's not a bad thing to do linking yourself to get that initial push but the best possible linking strategy is a naturally occurring one. Make sure you use all relevant social avenues open to you... Facebook pages, G+, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Instagram, StumbleUpon, and so on as long as it make sense for your site to be there and you keep up with posting. Hopefully those will generate natural links back to your site as people learn who you are and grow to like your site.

I think that they can be harmful to your site - especially if you use keyword anchor text.
If these are the only types of links that you have, I think that your site will be hit by Penguin.

If you do one or two per day... it will be enough to get you in trouble by the end of next year.

Hello, I jumped aboard as SEO for a client, who seems to of had been hit by panda and penguin back in 2012 of April, the panda part I feel I've fixed by creating better content, combining pages that were same topic into one, basically creating a better content experience that relates better to search terms users are searching for. Once the site was redesigned and relaunched all keywords improved minus one, the main keyword they want to rank for. Created a landing page for it, that is very nicely optimized for that keyword and it's brothers and sisters, however that page isn't used by google since it's brand new with a PA of 1. Doing a backlink audit I found 102 links out of 400 using the same anchor text as the keyword they want ranked for, they also have synonyms anchor text for other links too but not quite as much. Most of those 102 domains using the main keyword anchor text are directories, in my opinion I'd declare all of them spam, however there are a few with DAs higher than 50, making me little more nervous to disavow, since I want to make sure we get out of the penalty if we were hit by penguin but also don't want to ruin the ranking for other keywords we're doing better with, since they are longtails and short, but very relevant to users. How is the best way to determine if a site / directory is spammy enough that it's penalizing you and how could I approach the anchor text issue with backlinks? 99% of these links I cannot have changed, since they're directories I doubt many have had a human mess with them in a while. Sidenote* If you're going to post a link as a response, try to summarize what that link will be about, as many times links are giving as an answer but end up not really providing the meat we were seeking. Too many on-page links vs. UX issue
I am having an issue with many of our pages having too many on-page links. I have gotten many of them below the 100 page limit that is suggested and I understand this is not a critical factor with SEO, but my issue is this: Many important pages I am trying to optimize are buried at a "3rd" level which is actually not accessible from the home page navigation dropdown due to our outdated CMS. I am trying to decide if we should develop our site to display these pages on-hover from the main navigation. This would make a lot of sense since users would find these pages easier, however adding this functionality would increase on-page links by a lot more. So in your opinion, would it be worth it to spend the money to have this functionality developed? Or would it end up hurting our SEO standings?

Solutions for too many on-page links?
We have just begun using SEO Moz a few months ago and have been busy cleaning up some of our warnings and errors. One of the errors that has been an issue is ... too many on-page links. I am trying to correct this issue and I am wondering how seo moz counts these links. For instance... we have links to many of our product categories in a drop down from our main menu, those same links are listed in our footer. Does this get counted as two or only one link. If two, should we make one of the link no follow or how would you best suggest correcting this. Our website is www.unikeyhealth.com Since the menu and the footer appear on virtually every page on our site correcting this issue will quickly sort out this problem. Thanks for any advice.

Is placing content in sub directories better for SERP
Hi For small web sites with less than 6 pages Is there a benefit to structuring url paths using keyword rich sub directories compared to pages in the root of the site. for example: domainname.co.uk/keywordpagename.html or www.domainname.co.uk/keyword/keywordpagename.html which seems to have better rankings? thanks keyword

Too many links in header menu
I'm working on a few clients who are starting to get big header menus. Their site now easily exceeds the 100 links per page recommendation. Normally I would recommend them to cut down on the links, bit in this case these sites have menus that makes navigation easier. I honestly think these menus adds value for the users. The dilemma is that I think the menus provide value from an UX standpoint, but I'm not sure from the SEO standpoint. Any recommendations to this dilemma? Directory Indexed in Google, that I dont want, How to remove?
Hi One of my own websites, having a slight issue, Google have indexed over 500+ pages and files from a template directory from my eCommerce website. In google webmaster tools, getting over 580 crawl errors mostly these ones below I went into my robots text file and added Disallow: /skins*

Too many footer links?
Hi. We're working on http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/ at the moment, and I was wondering what's everyone's opinion on footer links. There's quite a lot on the page, and I was wondering if there might be a few too many. If so, what would be the best plan of action? Remove them altogether, stick them in an iframe or in a bit of JS so they can't be crawled? Thanks!
