How Important is Placement of Anchor Text
-
I'm working on a series of guest posts to help promote a site. These are competitive, high quality posts from a well-respected resource in the industry. I placed the author introduction at the front of the posts, with anchor text for the keywords we are targetting (e.g., "This is a guest post by John Doe, a [keyword] who ... and writes about [keyword].").
I understand that having the anchor text in a prominent location - such as near the front of the post - will probably be more authoritative than a sentence at the very end. My question: how significant is this difference?
The blog that I am posting on wants to include author information at the end only and only have one link using the site name (which doesn't contain keywords). The post I sent had two deep links using keyword-rich anchor text, placed at the beginning. I am trying to decide whether to walk away and keep shopping the material around.
-
I'll also add this - if the link and it's surrounding text are NOT directly related in a laser-focus manner to the content topical focus of the article itself, it's not even an ideal link from a "pure" SEO perspective, even if it's high up in the content area.
Which just reinforces the whole "don't get lost on this being such a big deal" concept.
-
From a pure SEO perspective, the higher up in the page's main content area the better. However once you introduce overall inbound link profile factors, if all you have are top of content area links, it looks unnatural. So eventually it becomes a negative. That's why it's vital to not get hung up on any single particular SEO tactic. Aiming for "perfect" SEO ultimately causes you to end up with "flawed" SEO.

Thanks to all who have responded. Let me bring it back to my original question, though, which I may have obscured with all of the related information. All else being equal: on a scale of 1 to 10, how important is it that the link and anchor text appear in the first paragraph in the post instead of 500+ words later in the author attribution box? I know that there's some benefit (in terms of more authority), but how much?
Of course, I know this is somewhat speculative. Just wanting to get your views.
-
Link placement is pretty much the whole point in block level analysis so it's definitely important. But all I know is that links from within the body content surrounded by relevant text wins against footer, side bar, and links page links. I "think" but could be wrong, the only link worth more is a link from the main nav... but I assume that would only be for internal links anyway?
-
" It's a so-so site."
Then maybe you can get a better deal elsewhere.
I publish some "contributed content" but as soon as the person starts talking about links and anchor text my interest in the content falls through the floor. I immediately worry about linking to a site where manipulation is happening..... the content usually isn't worth it after that.
Just sayin' how some people view articles and links.
-
Thanks for the response. It's a so-so site. The site has a DmR of 4.2, but doesn't seem to pass much authority to the blog portion of the site (the blog is integrated into a larger website). The article will be relevant to the site visitors, but we are unlikely to see any conversions from visitors of this site (it's a legal article and the attorney who authored it can only practice in her jurisdiction). Other blog posts by guest authors don't seem to rank particularly well, but there are some exceptions.
-
Every site needs a variety of inbound links from a variety of sources, with a variety of "footprints". So don't turn down a high value site opportunity just because you don't get the kind of link profile you think you need from it.
Not only is it good for SEO to have such a variety, it's good for visitor click-through traffic, which in turn can lead to more interaction, more engagement, and more buzz. Those then in turn bring back even more value from an SEO perspective in full circle.
-
Without further information about the website... the one that you consider walking away from might have the best links - even if you only get one of them.
The guy obviously has his standards and isn't going to prostitute his site to linkbuilders.

Anchor Text - How many and what do with our old posts
Hello, I have a two larger established websites that achieve over 1000 unique views a day. The sites have done well but we have always had problem with SEO. The vast majority of traffic is from our social media accounts -- we rank low on the SERP - below competitive pages that have less updates and much lower traffic. When I set the sites up I misunderstood a number of key issues but with over 4500 posts and 600 pages it has takes a huge amount of time to change things. I have now realised another issue -- we did not use Anchor Text to link to provide internal links to our keywords on our site. We are now adding them. My question is two fold: How many internal links should we add? From what I read on Moz - 5 to 6 internal links should be the right number. Comments? 2) We have numerous posts ie over 4000 that go back over 4 years. Should I change them all at once or will this flag a spam issue with Google? Believe me after years of problems I do not want another set back. Suggestions and advice would be welcome. Thanks

Exact Match Anchor Text - How Can These Guys Be Getting Away With It?
Hi. I've noticed that some of my search competitors seem to be getting away with heavy use of exact match anchor text in their backlinks. In the UK, for the term [HR Software] the top 3 SERPs have on average: 63% of their backlinking domains using the exact match anchor text [HR Software] 50% of their backlinking pages use the exact match anchor text [HR Software] I know there are hundreds of factors at play other than just the above but to me their anchor text profiles scream "LINK SPAM". Is this normal? Have I missed something? or do I just bide my time and wait for them to be hit with a penalty? Thanks David

Internal Links - Anchor Text - Strategy
Good Morning... I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or advice on an internal linking strategy for an e commerce website. I was thinking about adding a link to all of the subcategory pages that says: "View All : main keyword" and having my main keyword hyperlinked back to the home page. This would provide users who have gotten to a subcategory page that may not be exactly what they are looking for simply click that link and go back to the home page to select a different category.... Would having an internal link with the same anchor text on roughly 30 pages hurt my rankings? Wouldn't that help users navigate through my site? As always, any thoughts/advice or strategy tips are appreciated. Thanks

Remove links or change anchor text?
I am currently in the process of cleaning up the link profile for a website that has been hit by Penguin thanks to loads of links from free directories with exact match keyword anchor texts (about 200 root domains from total of 300 root domains). I was wondering whether it's best to remove these un-natrual keyword anchor text links altogether, or change the anchor texts to brand (domain name, domainname.com, www.domainname.com, http://www.domainname.com)? I am currently trying to remove these links but was thinking it would be quicker to get to a healthier link profile (in terms of brand/commercial anchor text split) by altering the anchor texts and not removing them. Some of these directories are the worst of the worst on the other hand. Also note that I'm only really getting about a 30% response rate from the owners of these directories. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.

Will online PR with optimized anchor-text hurt my SEO efforts?
With Google's recent phishing expedition and increased focus on natural link profiles etc where does this leave PR distribution with optimized anchor-text? Using the pai for PR distribution services has always been a great way to build backlinks but I just wonder whether these will be considered over-optimised in future?

Anchor Text vs Rankings!
Let's say I have a page about houses for sale (which has the biggest number of search queries/month). I want to rank with that page for another variations like house for sale, and house sale. Now, if i build links only with anchor text **houses for sale **(presuming that Google is OK with that) and i will take top 3 for that KW, i will rank very high too for the other two combinations of words? Or Google treats different plural vs singular and the stop word for. This is an example based on site for one client of mine. His site is about Hotels in Mamaia (hoteluri in mamaia in romanian) and i build links with anchor text hoteluri in mamaia. For this KW i took pos 4 but for hoteluri mamaia i am on page 9 from Google.ro. These two combinations of words are 90% the same in my language. For you to know hoteluri mamaia has bigger numeber of search queries/month (6 600 vs 260).

Set a desination url to text that did not have it previously
I have the following question. Is it OK to set a desination url to text that did not have it previously? Can it cause SEO (SERP) issues? For example, I have this sentence: The tool you're using is great, but this template will help you. Say, the "this template" text has been just plain text for like a year. And now I want to add a certain destination url to the "this template" phrase. So, can it cause some SEO issues to me or not?

Is the frontpage/deeplinking ratio of backlinks an important ranking factor?
Hi, i am asking me since a while, if the relation of the amount of frontpage backlinks divided through the amount of deeplinks pointing to a domain is an important ranking factor? In this area, i am not so much looking in the total numbers of backlinks, but more at the number of linking root domains. Do you have explore the ratio of frontpage/deeplinking as ranking factor reqarding the 100% of external backlinks? So for example, what do you consider better, asuming all root linking domains in theory are equal, for the SERP of the main keyword for which the frontpage is running on Google. Case A Frontpage = 80 Linking Domains

Subpages = 20 Linking Domains 80 / 20 = 4 / 1 (4 times more frontpage linking domains than deep linking domains to subpages) Case B Frontpage = 90 Linking Domains
Subpages = 10 Linking Domains 90 / 10 = 9 / 1 (9 times more frontpage linking domains than deep linking domains to subpages) Case C Frontpage = 95 Linking Domains
Subpages = 5 Linking Domains 95 / 5 = 19 / 1 (19 times more frontpage linking domains than deep linking domains to subpages) Greetings from Hamburg,
