Press Release Newswires - a dangerous option?
-
Hi, I'm a PR and haven't used a newswire once over last 10 years. There are usually better alternatives which give you more control.
Anyway, now a client has asked me for distribution of investor information via a newswire and now I've started worrying about the SEO consequences.
I've spent a couple of days phoning around newswires and I think there's a real danger of picking up lots of backlinks from syndication sites (most of the distributors have sites they "partner" with to reproduce your original news release) so...
Lots of backlinks will suddenly appear from external duplicate content (I will not carry the news release on client's website (no newsrooom) and I will just use url as link).
I'm thinking there's the potential for a penalty (and even if not now, then in the future if Google decides to tighten rules further which looks likely).
One newswire has recognized this and now only syndicates on 2 websites. The others haven't including the business newswire I've been asked to use.
Your thoughts would be welcome... Thanks in advance!

Hi Cyrus - that's really helpful, and interesting - thanks so much. I think you're dead right RE: sticking to newsworthy releases! Look forward to your blog post on the subject Best wishes, Luke

Hi Luke,
Thanks for asking this question. There's been a lot of misconceptions around press releases lately, in the wake of Matt Cutt's recent statements, and I've been meaning to write a blog post about it soon.
I happen to use press releases for link building, successfully, quite a bit. The trick is realizing that the links on the press release sites themselves don't really help you, and can actually hurt you if you over-optimize (or even optimize) the anchor text.
Press releases distributed across a vast network of duplicate, low quality pages have the potential to create a very Penguin-like problem.
Here's a portion of my presentation from MozCon which addressed this topic:
http://www.slideshare.net/cyrusshepard/high-roi-content-strategies-for-seo/48
My three rules for press releases are:
- Don't link to yourself (or client) using important keywords
- Linking using generic anchors or your domain name is fine, i.e. http://example.com
- The goal is not links directly from the press releases themselves, but from 3rd party sources that pick up on the news and write their own content about you - the way a press release is traditionally supposed to work.
In my opinion, if you press release doesn't earn links from independent 3rd party sources (news sites, reporters), or earn you significant traffic, then you most likely didn't have anything newsworthy to announce in the first place, and likely wasted your money.
The whole thing rest on newsworthy content. As a PR professional, I'm probably preaching to the choir, and I'm sure you understand better than most, perhaps even better than me.
In the end, don't fear the press release. They serve a legitimate purpose. Just use them the way they were meant to be used - by earning links instead of buying them.

The competitor is only doing press releases, guarateed - looking at the links pointing back to their site, the only ones going back to the pages that are ranking for this high value keyword are from spammy press release sites, many of which are specific to different states in the USA (The competitor is from the UK).
Doesn't look like anyone is sharing or linking to the content or the press releases.
-
James, Is your competitor doing only press release ? As per the video, links from Press release doesn't affect SEO directly but when the content is published on several sites, it might get into the eye and he might share it out that helps in SEO. Matt Cutt has mentioned that in last part of Video.
-
That's not what i've found though.
A pretty big competitor of mine started targetting a high value keyword several years ago and several months ago released a whole wave of these press release distributions - They had a slight improvement for a couple of weeks and then went from #40 to #4 in the space of a month.
They're now #2 and it looks like they'll take #1 within the next couple of weeks.

Hi Guys,
Do you know this ???
Matt Cutts of Google said in a Google Webmaster Helpforums that links from press releases shouldn't have a positive impact on your rankings.

Just to give you an idea of what kind of partnership they are referring to..
The sites they partner with generally just pull the text and occasionally maybe the link within the PR. What I've seen from a few PR I had with PRweb, there are no links to your site other than PRweb and any outlet that decides to publish your content.
No actual site or 'partner' would want to aggregate that many PR...AND give link juice. That is just not cool SEO.
So there is little danger of PR damaging your SEO.
Whether or not PR is still a good source of SEO is another topic for another day.
Hope that helps

You could find a PR wire which doesn't produce a backlink, far as I know they use to sell the service through the SEO benefit, saying you can even have a link or 2 in the body content, well just don't include them or at the end of the article include a text link which isn't actually a active link.
Just a thought.

Press Releases. What are the reasons (if any) that I should even consider them?
For the last couple years, i believed common knowledge that press releases was NOT the way to go for SEO. So I avoided it like crazy! Now, I'm doing some research and I realize that some (or alot) companies still create press releases to get the word out so that they can spread the message. I am going to be signing with some clients that are bigger brands and I want to do everything in our power to get the word out. I've done social outreach, commenting and cold emails to influencers before, but now I've been seeing some competitors using press releases with a little success, I want to ask the community, is there a method they recommend of testing efficacy of press releases? My biggest fear is using press releases then months/years down the line be hit hard by a penalty just for testing different PR sites.

Are links on a press page considered "reciprocal linking"?
Hi, We have a press page with a list of links to the articles that have mentioned us (most of which also have a link to our website). Is there any SEO impact with this approach? Does Google consider these reciprocal links? And if so, would making the links on the press page 'nofollow' solve the issue?

Old Press Release sites - Which ones do you Disavow and leave alone
Hi Mozers! I need your help. I'm in the final stages of a huge link audit and press releases are a big concern. As you know, press release distribution sites up until 2012 had "follow" links, giving webmasters a delight of having their keyword anchor texts a big boost in rankings. These are the websites that are troubling me today so i would appreciate your input on my strategy below as most of these websites are asking for money to remove them: 1. Press Release sites that are on the same C-class - Disavow 2. Not so authoritative press release websites that just follow my www domain only (no anchor texts) - I leave it alone 3. Not so authoritative press release websites but have anchor texts that are followed - Disavow 4. Post 2012 press release websites that have "followed" anchor text keywords - Request to remove, then disavow 5. Post 2012 press release websites that just follow my www domain only (no anchor texts) - leave it alone #2 and #5 are my biggest concern. Now more than ever I would appreciate your follow ups. I will respond quickly and apply "good answers" to the one's that make the most sense as my appreciation to you. God bless you all.

Link profile heavy with press release syndication links caused drop at Penguin 2.0
I'm wrestling with something that I'm hoping members of the community can provide input on.... I've working with an enterprise level client that is in the business of data capture and distribution. I've diagnosed a clear drop of traffic on May 22nd, i.e a loss of search visibility post Penguin 2.0. Their link profile is big! Discussions with internal stakeholders who have been with the company 10's of years confirm that no "link building" service providers have ever been hired and no over-zealous employee is ever likely to have tried to "do" link building internally. They are just one of those lucky companies that by their nature publish information that people want to link to and share. As a first port of call I've grouped links by anchor text and can see groups of hundreds of matching anchors based on their brand URL and specific page titles. The matching anchors have resulted from big take up of interesting data that they have marketed via press releases. NOT for link purposes. My question is this.... Does the community think or have evidence (or can point me toward any case studies) that show that Press release syndication alone could result in: a) a penguin penalty or...

b) a devaluing of press release type links during Penguin 2.0 that could have resulted in a loss of search visibility and give the impression of a penalty Your thoughts are much appreciated!0 -
Is there a danger linking to and from one website too many times?
Basically my webdeveloper has suggested that instead of using a subfolder to create an English and Korean version of the site I should create two different websites and then link them both together to provide the page in English, or in Korean, which ever the case may be. My immediate reaction is that search engines may perceive this kind of linking to be manipulative, as you can imagine there will be a lot of links (One for every page). Do you think it is OK to create two webpages and link them together page by page? Or do you think that the site will get penalized by search engines for link farming or link exchanging. Regards, Tom

Publication of articles by the press office
When the press office sends content about my business portals and it is published, is it considered a natural link or not? What is the correct form to put the link on this content?

Link Building with links in footer of Word Press Themes- Is This BLack Hat??
I See lots of free word press themes with links in footer like Kids Headphones | Colombia Classifieds | Broadway Tickets Is this a valid white hat link building method? What if the theme looked like a particular industry and the links related to the industry would that be better?
