SEO for New Magento Site??!?
-
Hi All,
We have had a new site delivered by our developers (hurrah...the old one was to terrible for words) but we seem to be having a lot of issues with the new Magento platform. What they have done is used the community version and tried to customize it.
I came on to this project about a month into the build and although Magento does seem to do a lot things well there do seem to be some problems. From an SEO prespective we have seen some increase on some search terms and a drop of in others. I would be interested in hearing from other Magento users about their experiences with this platform and any ideas on how to crank up the activity. Our site is at www.nationwidepharmacies.co.uk . There are few odd bits including the side navigation which seems to be very clunky and not overly customizable in this version. Any useful criticism would also be well received.
Look forward to hearing
Nic

This is great article. I am trying to build video tutorial for Magento SEO, i think this could be helpful.

Hi Ethan,
Thanks for that. That looks pretty comprehensive. Have you implemented the Yoast modules? Has it had any decent impact?
Cheers

I hope this helps.

Sorry Marcus, my account has been hacked. I did not write this.
I would certainly not do such a thing.
Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Definitely not a good start.... 'Are You Want To Seo Ranking'

Thanks Marcus,
Have been on to the dev guys re: Rel canonical.. It looks like Magento does have a config setting fro that which they missed. They are adamant about the navigation issue though which is a real bummer....although i would agree that it sounds more like they don't know how to do it.
Cheers

Hey, I would not make any assumptions that Google can cope with anything like this and I would really want a canonical tag in place for those product pages for starters.
The sidebar issue sounds fishy, surely, you should be able to show links to anything you want anywhere. This sounds more an issue the developers are having with the myriad complexities of magento than anything else.
Given the industry you are in (pharmaceuticals / viagra etc) I would want to play this squeaky clean and get all my on-page-SEO ducks in a row.
Really, I can give you general SEO advice but am no Magento SEO so can't really comment on the other aspects (sorry).
Any Magento SEO guru's here?

Hi Marcus,
The duplicate URL's is certainly one area of concern...as you say there are multiple paths to get to the same page. I did read somewhere that Google can cope with this issue as it understands how Magento works. Is that right?
One thing that really does bug me is that we have to create additional pages for products so we can get them to show in the side nav bar. The developers had issues trying to get the product pages to link from the navigation so we end up with a product info page e.g. http://www.nationwidepharmacies.co.uk/online-doctor/erectile-dysfunction/erectile-dysfunction-treatments/viagra/viagra-tablets.html and an extra page linking from the side nav http://www.nationwidepharmacies.co.uk/online-doctor/erectile-dysfunction/erectile-dysfunction-treatments/viagra.html which seems a bit labour intensive.

Hey Nic
Magento is one platform where it is easy to create a lot of duplication. I am no Magento expert but the first thing I would look at is internal duplication, multiple URLs for products etc.
Can you drop a URL in here along with some specific concerns and I am sure the good folks at SEOMoz will dig in and take a look for you.
Cheers
Marcus

Translated the site but traffic is not coming
Hi, We've build a lawyer directory website (www.iranianlawyers.com) which already has good Google rankings for related terms (Ex. Iranian lawyers, Iranian lawyers california, etc). About 1.5 months ago we translated the site to Farsi and published it online: www.iranianlawyers.com/farsi However we have yet to see any new traffic generated from those pages. The website has a decent back-link profile and there are no almost no competitors in our space with translated pages. Would someone please take a look at our translated pages and let me know if there are any major on-site issues that you see that we need to address? I've checked for noindex or nofollow tags but they dont seem to be an issue. Not sure if I'm missing something here. Thank you very much

Does Channeladvisor really assist in SEO?
I'm getting emails from Channeladvisor recommending I join, thereby taking advantage of a change to Google Shopping. It is starting in Australia from today (13Feb13). Is it an upgraded version of Google Adwords, or another form of a Commerce Merchant (obviously with multiple channels,e.g. Ebay, Amazon etc)? With Adwords, I found it too expensive for the type of product we sell (printer cartridges). But the real question is, DO MY RANKINGS DROP FROM NOT USING CHANNEL ADVISOR?

Recommended Wordpress themes for great SEO
Hi there, I'm trying to decide which theme to use. My main concern is if the theme has been built using a stable framework to ensure plugin compatibility for SEO. Also a general question, does the homepage need to have a certain amount of text content for SEO, or can other pages be SEO optimised with text / keyword? Some of the nicer themes seem to have a sparce text to image ratio on the homepage. I quite like this as an initial 'welcome' but worry this isn't great for SEO. Any suggested themes / advice will be welcome. Thanks

SEO- SLIDER
Are sliders bad for SEO. I have a slider that uses HTML elements. The text in the slider is in the source code; however, the words are surround by unreadable code. Give me an example of good SEO friendly sliders for wordpress. Who uses what and why?

Creating Duplicate Content on Shopping Sites
I have a client with an eCommerce site that is interested in adding their products to shopping sites. If we use the same information that is on the site currently, will we run into duplicate content issues when those same products & descriptions are published on shopping sites? Is it best practice to rewrite the product title and descriptions for shopping sites to avoid duplicate content issues?

Geo-targeted content and SEO?
I am wondering, what effect does geo-targeted "cookie cutter" content have on SEO. For example, one might have a list of "Top US Comedians", which appears as "Top UK Comedians" for users from the United Kingdom. The data would be populated with information from a database in both cases, but would be completely different for each region, with the exception of a few words. Is this essentially giving Google's (US-based) crawler different content to users? I know that plenty of sites do it, but is it legitimate? Would it be better to redirect to a unique page, based on location, rather than change the content of one static page? I know what the logical SEO answer is here, but even some of the big players use the "wrong" tactic. I am very interested to hear your thoughts.

Best information organization for a new site?
I'm launching a new stain removal website, and wanted to know what would be considered the best way to organize the content? Since most articles will roughly involve "removing X from Y" or "how to remove Z," I can see two ways... 1. Organize articles by Stained Items, Stain Agents and perhaps Cleaning Detergents. 2. Spread the categories out more, to try and group stained items according to categories... E.g. Hard surfaces, delicates, fabrics, ceramics etc. Any thoughts on which of these two might be the best way to organize the site, or are there any better suggestions? Not sure what the main considerations are here... Either of these two seem equally user-friendly.
