Best way to manage SEO for a massive events listing website.
-
I run a website that tracks entertainment for the entire state of South Dakota. While I've made some fantastic strides in gaining traffic, I feel lost on how to manage all those entries in an SEO friendly manner. I have a TON of errors showing on my crawl diagnostics and I just don't know what to do. The nature of the website is such that there are going to be duplications all over the place. I know that I can help some of this by getting my canonical links setup properly (that's coming in my next version of the site's theme), but what else should I do to make those event listings friendly for the SE's??

You are very welcome JC. Don't give up on your rich snippets. I think it was Richard Baxter who recently said that the most common problem he's seeing with micro-data is people giving up too soon when they don't see Google picking it up and displaying it right away. It could take 6 months. Just hang in there, and by all means try the tool. I bet it works

Thanks Dana! I have been using microformats in the code and hoping that Google would start using that in the snippets, but so far they haven't thrown me a bone. I'll check into this and see what I can do with it! Thank you so much.

Hi JC, You're in luck. Google just rolled out a new tool, specifically for events, that helps you get them set up with Structured Data without having to go in and code your pages. It's called the Data Highlighter Tool. Here's a linke to the offical post announcing it: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/12/introducing-data-highlighter-for-event.html
Here is a quote: "Data Highlighter is a point-and-click tool that can be used by anyone authorized
for your site in Google Webmaster Tools. No changes to HTML code are required.
Instead, you just use your mouse to highlight and "tag" each key piece of data
on a typical event page of your website:"Log in to your Google Webmaster Tools and click on "Structured Data" in the left Nav. - then click the subcategory "Data Highlighter" - Watch the brief video, then click "Start Highlighting."
I am hoping (for the love of God!) they add the same kind of simple tool to allow Webmasters to markup other types of data like product videos and reviews.
I hope this helps you out a little. Given that this tool is specifically designed for sites with events, it should be a perfect fit!
Dana

Our clients Magento 2 site has lots of obsolete categories. Advice on SEO best practice for setting server level redirects so I can delete them?
Our client's Magento website has been running for at least a decade, so has a lot of old legacy categories for Brands they no longer carry. We're looking to trim down the amount of unnecessary URL Redirects in Magento, so my question is: Is there a way that is SEO efficient to setup permanent redirects at a server level (nginx) that Google will crawl to allow us at some point to delete the categories and Magento URL Redirects? If this is a good practice can you at some point then delete the server redirects as google has marked them as permanent?

Does Bitly hurt your SEO?
I often use bit.ly or Google URL shortener in links when other websites post my articles so I can track clicks. However, I am thinking this may HURT my SEO given that it is taking away a back link to my website. Is that logic correct ? If so, what is a good way to be able to track clicks if a website posts your article without jeopardizing the SEO value?

Good Seo Titles
Hi. Mybsite is www.theprinterdepo.com and I am trying to find a good template for my product/page titles. Many users search our products by the product model: something like Q2121X. Some other users search by: hp 1320 printer or just 1320 printer. They will almost never search for hp 1320 new, or hp 1320 refurbished. My website is developed in magento, and we have a SEO plugin in which I can put a template for the URL and also a template for the product title. I was thinking for title and URL. title + condition + productmodel However many users search for: "refurbished printers" and maybe its better that our products say something like this: HP 1320 Refurbished Printer, instead of: HP 1320 Printer - Refurbished - Q2121X Please let me know your suggestions.

What is the best way to deal with pages whose content changes?
My site features businesses that offers activities for kids. Each business has its own page on my site. Business pages contains a listing of different activities that organization is putting on (such as events, summer camps, drop-in activities). Some businesses only offer seasonal activities (for example, during Christmas break and summer camps). The rest of the year, the business has no activities -- the page is empty. This is creating 2 problems. It's poor user experience (which I can fix no problem) but it also is thin content and sometimes treated as duplicate content. What's the best way to deal with pages whose content can be quite extensive at certain points of the year and shallow or empty at other parts? Should I include a meta ROBOTS tag to not index when there is no content, and change the tag to index when there is content? Should I just ignore this problem? Should I remove the page completely and do a redirect? Would love to know people's thoughts.

As an agency, what is the best way to handle being the webmaster and hosting provider for several sites (some of which are in the same industry and have natural links to each other)?
We are an agency that builds and hosts websites for several companies (some of which happen to be in the same industry - and therefore naturally link to each other - we do not dictate). In regards to handling their domain registrations, webmaster tools account, google analytics account, and servers, what is the best practice to avoid Google thinking that these companies are affilliated? Even though they aren't affiliated, we are afraid that us being the "webmaster" of these sites and having shared servers for them that we may be affecting them.
