Guest Posts on Established Blogger/Wordpress.com sites

How much value do you put on guest post opportunities on blogspot.com or wordpress.com sites (or similar).
If the blog is established, gets good readership and traffic, do you consider it to be as useful as a privately hosted blog?
I'm not really looking for a definitive answer here, just people's thoughts.
Cheers,
Bede

Cheers for the responses everyone.
What everyone has said is pretty much in agreement with what I was thinking, and it's nice to have it confirmed.
Thanks!

I usually look at subdomain metrics as reported by OSE to gauge the strength of a particular wordpress or blogspot domain - if it is has legitimate external links, it's definitely something I'll consider.

I think a personal website is better for SEO than a shared platform such as blogger (which google owns) and wordpress.com.
But if the blog is established, gets good readership and traffic as you said then it's mostly a traffic play anyway, and I would go for it as long as it's a quality site and doesn't allow spammy articles or spam comment posts.

I think it depends more on the quality of the blog, domain age, links pointing to it, etc. If its a wordpress or blogspot blog that was obviously put up a week ago just to make one blogpost for a link then it will have little or no authority. However there are some great, high ranking blogs from blogspot and wordpress that have been around a long time, and a link in a guest post from those would help quite a bit. I would say it matters more how trustworthy the site is, not so much where its hosted.
Having said that, if two sites had the same ranking factors, same domain age, same links, etc. and one was hosted privately and the other on wordpress, I would think they would give the edge to the privately hosted one. I would think otherwise it wouldn't have much of an effect at all.

Guest blogging: is there a safe way to do it?
Following Google's nuking of My Blog Guest, is there any way of doing (high-quality, small-scale) guest posting safely? Specifically, do the tips from Neil Patel here (written Jan 22) still stand up? Only post on relevant blogs – ideally these blogs should also be larger than your website. In other words, do it because it will help with branding, traffic, and sales. Posting on bigger blogs that are also relevant will provide you with more good exposure than posting on small, unknown blogs. Avoid using rich anchor text – rich anchor text will become a huge red flag and will probably cause your site to get penalized eventually, especially if you are building these links through guest posts. Share the love – you won’t be able to link out to your site only. From Wikipedia to your competitors, you’ll have to link out to whichever site benefits the reader the most. Build up your author rank – with Google Plus becoming more popular, it will be easier for Google to determine how good of a writer you are. So, you’ll have to focus on publishing only valuable content as you won’t want crap tied to your author account. Co-citations are valuable – even if you don’t get a link from a guest post, just having your site mentioned in the article can help with rankings. I think Google will place more emphasis on co-citations in 2014.

Matt Cutts - Guest posts are dead comment
It seems like it was a while ago now that Matt Cutts made his announcement "that guest posts are dead", however, does anyone know if Google has acted on this? Most particularly, for those that are targeting guest posts on high-quality sites, what has so far been the effect since the announcement on rankings? Anyone seen a dip in rankings from their high-quality blog post strategy?

This is specifically for reviews for web hosting or VOIP services. Very technical. Where should I look for sites to get backlinks from?
