This entire approach to just outsourcing links, there is no such thing as a 100% safe way to do that. If you are looking to build links, it has to start with content on your site, you can't just throw money at an external company and walk away, it's just asking for trouble.

Invest this money on your own site, build things that people will link to and then tell the world about it.

Sudden and dramatic decrease in External Followed Links and Total External Links

I'm not sure how or why this has happened but from a span of a week my client's site went from 518 total external links to 97. I also saw a dramatic decrease in traffic for that week as well. I'm new to the SEO game but I have not made any changes to their content other than importing old blog posts that did not get migrated to their new host. What type of links to focus on...

Hi all Having just built a new site, I'm now looking at how best to SEO it. In past years, I gave into the temptation to outsource the backlinking altogether. For this project though, I am taking a much more hands on approach: I am either writing or working with good content writers I am posting to Twitter + FB more regularly With regards to backlinks, I am being much more specific as to how I go about it. I want to remain very niche specific and use only trustable sites. The question I have though, is how to know how to split the backlink types? I've looked at competitors using LinkDetective, but cannot seem to work out any common denominators. Some have more blogs than articles, while others have a lot of 'unknown' types (according to LinkDetective) If you're starting from scratch, what do you aim for? If you're aiming to build 100 backlinks (hypothetically), how would you decide on the breakdown (e.g. 20% blogs, 20% articles etc) Do Panda or Penguin updates this year influence choice? Thanks!

Two links with the same quality but different effect

Hi, the website I'm working for is loosing rankings for one specific keyword and since there haven't been any bigger onsite changes I assume it's the back links. The company bought some exact anchor text links in the past, so I went through those. One specific one attracted my attention: It's a site wide link which creates over 80% of the back link profile to the specific website. There was only one catch: part of this bought anchor text campaign is another highly targeted anchor text which is not negatively affected by the rankings. Still I didn't like the feel of this so I ran the seomoz keyword difficulty report. And there I discovered an interesting pattern: For keyword A we are the only ones in the top10 with such a high percentage of exact keyword usage. But for keyword B, which didn't loose rankings our top10 competitor have an even more over-optimized keyword usage or much weaker back link profile. So now I wonder if it could actually be the case, that we loose rankings for keyword A since our competitors have a more natural profile, but for Keyword B it has no negative effect due to the worse competition. hi, can i use abbreviations for domain, if i want to purchase a long keyword domain like 29 characters? abbreviations are good for SEO or GOOGLE appreciate it or not? and use that keyword in description of the site or title of the site need your help..

How to track competitor who uses another website on the url?

Hi everyone, The thing is pretty simple: I have a competitor who uses a different format of url, very similar to this: www.example.com - but he started to use a thing like this: example.mtv.com The problem is that every analysis that I make tell me something about mtv.com instead of the site I want. The url is redirected. Sorry about my english, but I think it is very clear. I want to know how to track something like this, because even in competitor analysis I'm getting info about the big site, and not the one I need. Thank you very much.

Business Directories and Spammy Link Profile

Hi, have been reading a lot about submissions to directories and posting spamming blogs and forums and how they're a bad idea, saw a great post on it by Rand in a white board Friday lecture, the only thing is I've been analysing a company and that appears to be what makes up its entire link profile, all the links point to their home page with their primary phrase as the anchor text. Just wondered how a company with some 4k links the majority being follows, hasn't been penalised for what are a really bad set of back links. Should add that this is an insurance company, they're no light weights in their industry but certainly not one of the big boys. Thanks, Lee Example here

50,000 Links From The Same Website

Hey Mozers, I was conducting competitive research for a client of mine and I discovered one of their competitors has over 50,000 backlinks! After removing my heart from my stomach I realized that 99.9% of the links came from a single website that doesn't have nearly that many pages. Has anyone experienced this in the past? And if so what exactly is going on? C

Where are the best places online to build powerful profile pages

So on SEOmoz you can create a profile page with followed links (after 200 points), just as you can do on Google Profiles. I'd like to build a strong backlink profile which features some of these highest links that my competitors will not have the time or effort to do. I'm working hard to answer questions on SEOmoz and to be a helpful part of the community, and have published some Google Knols for the Google profile building.
