Is it still possible for small businesses to rank well in google
-
Hi
I've been playing around with ecommerce sites for a few years now and although I am no expert I'm not a complete novice.
We used to do quite well in google but recent changes have halved our number of hits.
I have noticed that over the last year google has given priority to large brand names as opposed to relevancy.
For example, if you search for the term 'bridal jewellery' (google UK) you will see that apart from one or two the majority of placements are taken by big compnies who offer very little bridal jewellery. One or two pages at most.
My question is, is it still possible to rank well against these brand names or has google made it impossible for small companies.
PS we only practice ethical seo as suggested by seomoz.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like a hard to do list but will give it a go as google are putting me out of business at present. Thanks.

Great question. Smarts is what separates winners from losers.
"SMARTS" include any of the following (this is not an exhaustive list).....
- on-page optimization ability
- an ability to identify article topics that can become extremely popular
- an ability to identify article topics that are extremely valuable but not popular yet
- an ability to write best-on-the-web content for those topics
- an ability to acquire or create great images to illustrate your content
- an ability to present your content in a way that "hooks" the visitor
- an ability to promote your content effectively to the right people
- enthusiasm and verve
whispering this stuff is off the radar of most SEOs

Thanks
Makes sense and will give it a try. What do you mean by smarts ?

I agree with Guillermo.... That big brands seem to have an advantage in the Google rankings.
Small businesses can still rank well but they have to throw the same resources into their website as the big brands are spending. Those resources can be content, creativity, SEO and smarts.
It is a lot easier to compete against the big brands if you pick products or categories where you have lots of expertise and can create content about them that becomes valued and popular on the web.
Content pages are much more likely to become linked, liked, tweeted, etc than product pages. So, in my opinion a content site with a store is the best way to fight the big brands.

Ah, I did miss that minor detail! Hope you can still gleam some insight from my answer.

Thanks for the input.
I should have mentioned that I am running searches through google uk

I think Google will give a slight edge to big brands, as Eric Schmidt of Google famously stated that the internet was a cesspool and needed brands.
That being said, I think there is room to disrupt the market with a lot of hard work. If you look at the third result, Tejani, they have less than 200 root domains propelling them to that position. A closer look at their link profile shows a link from glamour.com referencing the bride's earrings.
Dillards and Nordstrom have thousands, and thousands of links, but with less than 200 root domain links, they got up there. It can be done, just won't be easy
Also, just my PPC OCD but I would run a PPC campaign for that keyword first to determine how profitable it is first before undertaking any SEO. How that helps!

Ranking dropped with no page changes
My rank for a keyword went from ranking #1 to #22. The page grade for this keyword is A, there was no site structure changes. The only thing I can see is that tumblr and reddit and other sources are now listed for this keyword and it's difficulty went from the mid-low teens to 28%. However, even given that, I do not a see a reason for this keyword alone to fall so far. It was giving us a ton of traffic, in fact, most of our organic search results came from this term for nearly two months. And 2 weeks ago for no reason, we were pushed to page 3. Has anyone else had similar experiences how do you counter it, and what can we do?

MOZ.com Page Rank of 2?
I don't recall the page rank of SEOMoz.com prior to the company's change to MOZ.com. But did notice that MOZ.com currently has a Page Rank of 2 (which I find weird since it's such a strong, content rich, highly-regarded site). I'd be interested in hearing about findings from the MOZ.com team on why the low PR and how has it affected your site since the change? (...and perhaps a look at the future through a crystal ball 🙂 I recall reading the MOZ domain changing article titled "Domain Migrations: Surviving the "Perfect Storm" of Site Changes" which had great info and addresses some reasons for PR loss in the 'Traffic and Ranking Loss' section: http://moz.com/blog/domain-migration-lessons

Google Panda - large domain benefits
Hi, A bit of a general question, but has anyone noticed a improvement in rankings for large domains - ie well known, large sites such as Tesco, Amazon? From what I've seen, the latest Panda update seems to favour the larger sites, as opposed to smaller, niche sites. Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this too? Thanks

Google Places Rank Replacement
Hi Guys We have recentley done work for a client where they ended up position 1 for their chosen keyword, which was great. Since then there rank has changed and they are now first in google places rank but not on organic search at all, where as before they were on both? Any suggestions on why this may have happened? Not to sure at why google would have replaced the organic rank with the places rank? Cheers Chris

Google Page Rank?
We have had a quality website for 12 years now, and it seems no matter how many more links we get and how much new content we add daily, we have stayed at PR3 for the past 10 years or so. Our SEOMoz domain authority is 52. We have over 950,000 pages linking to us from 829 unique root domains. Is this in line with PR3 or should we be approaching PR4 soon? We do daily blog posts with all unique, fresh quality content that has not been published elsewhere. We try to do everything with 'white hat' methods, and we are constantly trying to provide genuine content and high quality products, and customer service. How can we improve our PR and how important is PR today?
