How to build links for a domain name that is redirected to another url?
-
I'm helping a friend build links to his site because he recently moved across country. His primary domain isn't very SEO friendly (shef1.com) so he registered another domain (stephenshefrinphotography.com). Shef1.com has been around for awhile and has at least been crawled with a page rank of 1 so we decided to keep shef1.com as the main website and redirect stephenshefrinphotography.com to it. So for SEO sake I know it's best to at least have a keyword in your URL so I have been using the url stephenshefrinphotography.com in my link building efforts for local directories and blog comments. Is this the right way to go about this or should I be using the main url shef1.com? He had virtually no backlinks until I started helping him but the ones I have created over the last month are not showing up on the link analysis in my campaigns. I just want to make sure my efforts aren't in vain. Advice please. Thanks!

Hi All,
I have been facing the same problem but still i have been confused so please see my thoughts below.
We should be clear on @Melissa's question.
1 - He wants to know should we do the link-building on redirected domain or not.
2 - If we will do the link-building on redirected domain then what URL Google will follow and display in SERP.
As he said this new website "stephenshefrinphotography.com" redirected to his old domain "shef1.com" , that means new website domain is virtual and old one is real.
If we will create the backlinks for new website in order to get good ranking and traffic that will work or not ? If it will work then what URL will come in search page stephenshefrinphotography.com or shef1.com.
I am looking forward to hear from you soon.
Thanks a lot in advance..

I think a good way to get feedback on which domain is better is to ask facebook friends. I did that with my domain.
I asked them which do you like better: Bigfootmarketing.com or Planetmarketing.com
PlanetMarketing got about 70% of the votes from my Facebook friends.

**Will I be able to get his website to rank if I am entering the easier to remember url **
I haven't heard Mat Cutts nor Rand talk about that, but my guess would be no. I say pick one (preferably the brandable one) and stick with it.

I respect Francisco's response however if it were me I would go for the longer url as the main one and redirect the older one to it. If you are building links you shouldn't be doing it to a url that get's redirected, of course that is just my opinion, but hope I could give you something to consider.
All the best

Thanks for your response but I'm still not sure my question has been answered. I'm trying to be more clear.
Will I be able to get his website to rank if I am entering the easier to remember url (because it is his company name: stephenshefrinphotography.com) into listings/local directories/blog comments for link building and not the original url (shef1.com)?
There are not two websites. He started his website on the url shef1.com and also purchased stephenshefrinphotography.com which is only being redirected to shef1.com when clicked on.
So far... I've entered stephenshefrinphotography.com as the domain name for all the local listings I've created for him (Google Places, Yahoo & Bing Local, Yelp, etc). Is this OK or should I have used the actual domain shef1.com? Maybe it doesn't matter but I don't want to continue doing the wrong thing. At this point I could potentially go back and fix all the listings I've created to date if need be.
I understand the principles of ranking in the Google local listings because I've done it for several other people. I know I have to use the same company name, address, and phone number through out.

Dude, don't worry about the keyword in the domain. What you probably heard was someone talking about exact match domain. What I recommend is to market the domain name (not the URL) that is easier to remember. Who in the world is going to remember stephenshefrinphotography.com?
Put all your energy into one domain. Redirect old pages to new ones.
While it is good to have the keyword in the URL, don't forget there are over 200 other rankings factors. If you want to get something to rank just a little better, write your URL like this www.your-easy-to-remember-domain.com/keyword.

Spammy links redirecting to homepage of site -
Hey guys, I'm auditing a website at the moment and Moz is showing a few spammy links linking to it. The problem is these domains are all 301 redirecting to the domain I'm auditing. Let's say I'm auditing Site A. Site B is been flagged in Moz OSE with 12 spam flags. When I try to open Site B in a browser, it redirects back to Site A. What's the best thing to do, here? Disavowing domains redirecting to the site is surely a bad idea? Cheers.

Getting a sitewide links from one domain as oppsed to few links from certain pages, a good, bad or horrible idea?
Hello, I have a website that is performing really well in Google for country specific Real Estate Website. I have had this site for just about 2 years and I have 4600+ indexed pages, and about 50 of my main keywords appear in top 10 results on Google. I have now started a second site with a brand new domain, its only about 2 months old. This one is a Travel website and again its country specific (same country that real estate website is performing well in) and since its still building up the content and has barely a couple of backlinks, I am thinking of adding a linkback to it from my Real Estate Site. Is it a good idea to add a site wide link back from header section of the real estate website to my travel website? Both sites has same country and most of the keywords in both relate to this country. Or will I be better off adding a few text links from few pages with best Page Authority? Or - do you suggest that I do not link the two at all? Both sites are hosted on different servers, with different IP's and one is on windows server created in asp.net while another is a magento site. Any advidce / insight will be much appreciated and thank you in advance.

Get number of OUTBOUND link from a domain ??
Hello I´m doing some link profile audit and I noticed that there are some data that would be nice to know for a proper evaluation. The case is the following: Imagine I have a link coming from a blog, so (besides other factors) would be really great to know how many external links follow-nofollow this blog has. I dont mean external links pointing to them (what opensite gives you), what I would like to know is the total number of links this blog has pointing to other external websites. With this data, I would be able to guess in a better way if this blog is selling links or if is spammy. I would be able to know also how this blog/domain distributes its link juice and if the link gives me some value or if is dangerous. I have found some tools/sites but i just get the number of links a specific url has, not the domain info: Screaming frog (but the free version gives you almost nothing, link count checker, etc... ) Do you know any way to get this data in a domain level? You think this data would be important to decide about keeping a link or taking it out? Why none of the powerful tools of the market (opensite, majestic, etc...) provide this info? Many thanks for your help

Links I am not Building?
Hi All, I check webmaster multiple times on a daily basis, and I noticed some links that I have not worked on and look a bit spammy, is it possible for people to purposely pont bad links in my direction? If that is the case is there a way for me to remove them myself? Also the number of total backlinks are very different in Webmaster and my Open Site Explorer, is this normal? Thanks again !

Link Building Template
Hi all, I am looking to find an actionable, easy to use, link building template to be used by myself as well as across office/clients. Key subject areas for link building have been defined but I am keen to apply a template to past and future link building opportunities as I build on the link building tactics I have a number of link building targets e.g. form competitor analysis, existing links from websites and looking to reach out to amend their anchor text, prospect websites Does anyone have a good insight into categorising the different link building targets by sector? Many thanks Simon

How fast is too fast when it comes to link building?
I'm getting ready to start a massive link building campaign. I plan on using a variety of anchor texts, getting links from a variety of sources, and only getting high quality links from relevant sites. My main concern is getting penalized for gaining too many links too quickly. Does anyone have any advice on how fast is too fast? Or how much is too much in a certain amount of time? Thanks!
