International SEO | URL Structure
-
I'm looking for advice/point of view for setting up international domains. I.e. sub-domains, ccTLD, etc.
At the 10,000 ft. view - the client (international retail company) is trying to decide which type of URL structure to use in their new platform:
- Option 1: Root Domain ccTLD - www.brand.ca, www.brand.fr, etc.
- Option 2: Subdomains - fr.brand.com, ca.brand.com, au.brand.com
- Option 3: Subfolders - ]www.brand.com/ca/, ]www.brand.com/au/
Consider these scenarios/questions and use to help decide which URL structure makes sense:
1) I'm an Aussie in Australia and I do a Google search on Hank Myer Aron, which is a huge seller in the U.S. and also included at the Australia locale site.
- If we go with subfolders, am I likely to see the U.S. Aron page higher in my search results than the Australia Aron page? Or is the U.S. site not a factor in a search done outside the U.S.?
- If we use subfolders AND geo-detection, does this bump the ranking of the locale page?
- Do sites using ccTLDs always get ranked above those that don't? For example, if an Australian dealer selling Aron has URLs dealer.com.au/..., would their pages rank ahead of hankmyer.com/au/...?
- If we went the ccTLD route, would the Aron page at hankmyer.com.au take precedence over the U.S. page? (Again, assuming U.S. site is relevant in this scenario.)
2) I'm a Frenchman in France searching on Hank Myer Aron.
- If we use subfolders AND an alias URL that's translated to French (brand.com/fr/produits/sieges/sieges-aron), would we expect the page rank to be comparable to using the ccTLD and/or expect greater trust than just using subfolders without translated URLs?

Do translated URLs have any mitigating affect on duplicate page content?

Which URL strategy is best choice from a SEO standpont?
-
Hi,
I am also looking into the same issue and agree that a ccTLD is the ideal solution, but I am also aware of potential problems that can bring in a different area. My experience is only with Germany and I can only speak for that country, but it is likely that the same applies elsewhere.
The minute you set up a .de domain, you come under German taxation rules - ie. you become liable to pay tax in Germany on all your income from that country. You also come under all other relevant German laws. In our case we offer language travel to the UK and we would need to set up a protection scheme as required in Germany to protect travellers' money in the case of our going bankrupt. This alone is a very complicated scheme and failure to get it right can lead to nasty consequences!
Large companies with a team of international lawyers behind them can no doubt deal with all that ccTLD involves. Smaller companies just won't have the resources but they need to treat this issue with care.

Hi,
I believe the attached video from Rand's whiteboard friday answers all your questions.
4)>>>Which URL strategy is best choice from a SEO standpoint?<<<
for the best result, I find using a CCTLD will have the most benefits in search ranking for people in that country. If you use a France ccTLD, then it will have a higher ranking than the .com site if the searcher is in France.
3)>>>Do translated URLS have any mitigating affect on duplicate page content?<<<
Google mentioned in their webmaster blog that if the content is in a different language, it will not be considered as duplicate content. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=182192
- Using Geotargeting on the French subfolder will give you more benefits in just using a .com site. However, compared to ccTLD, ccTLD will have more power and benefit than the subfolder.

Tracking International Keywords
Hi I haven't had much luck tracking keywords on my international sites let alone discovering new keywords. What are some strategies/suggestions to accomplishing this? Currently I have campaigns set-up for the UK, Germany, France, and China in additional to our main US-Canada campaign.

Multi National Company that Doesn't Want to Implement International SEO
I have got an interesting situation where I have a client who wants to merge two ccTLD's into one. They currently have .fi and .com and they want to merge both sites to .com .fi is for finland and .com for USA. They want to merge the sites and the original plan was to use subfolders for each country and pair with hreflang. However the team now wants to merge both sites with NO subfolders differentiating between finland or the US. My understanding of International SEO that this is the most opposite from best practices, but is there any specific reasons why they wouldn't want to do this? I'm struggling to find any specific reasons that I can cite to the client that would argue why we should at least do a subfolder or some sort of international seo strategy.

International SEO - Targeting US and UK markets
Hi folks, i have a client who is based in italy and they set up a site that sells travel experiences in the sout of Italy (the site currently sit on a server in Italy). The site has been set up as gTLDs: www.example.com They only want to target the US and the UK market to promote their travel experiences and the site has only the english version (the site does not currently offer an italian version). If they decide to go for the gTLDs and not actually change to a ccTLDs (which would be ideal from my point of view) how are the steps to be taken to set this up correctly on GSC? They currently only have one property registered on GSC: www.exapmple.com therefore i guess the next steps are: Add new property - www.example.com/uk and and set up geo targeting for UK Existing property - www.example.com/ set up geo targeting for US In case the client does not have the budget to optimise the content for american and british languages, would still make sense to have 2 separate property in GSC (example.com for US market and example.com/uk for UK market)? Few considerations: Add canonical tag to avoid duplicate content across the two versions of the site (in the event there is no budget to optimise the content for US and UK market)? Thank you all in advance for looking into this David

Local Strategies For International Business
A client of mine is in a field that Google (correctly) recognizes as international, and does get traffic and leads for this but they are bound by sales covenants to sell only in regional geographic territories in their country, Other than PPC is there a strategy I can use to increase regional traffic? As mentioned, Google does not recognize this business as local.

SEO Recommendations
Our website www.nile-cruises-4u.co.uk has slowly slipped down the page one ranking of Google.co.uk for our main search terms after several years at number one. I've looked closely at our site as much as a "non-techie" can do but wondered if anyone could recommend a good SEO company/individual that could take an overview and then help us try and climb back up the page one rankings. As a small business I dont' have tons of money to spend but I realise the importance of good SEO and I am prepared to spend as much as is required within reason. I thought members of SEOMoz were more likely to be able to recommend good SEO companies rather than me trawl around the web trying to find a company or individual that might suit our needs. I hope this is a suitable question for this forum but apologise in advance if it isn't. Colin

Multi regional + multi lingual URLs
We have made the decision to start using a new ecommerce platform, which means we will have to migrate our existing webshops. Some of our new customers will be launched on the new platform straight away. Some limitations we used to have when it comes to URL structure have mostly been lifted, so I've been thinking what the perfect URL would be in terms of SEO. Since we mostly work for pan European customers, the multi regional and multi lingual aspect is a very important one, as it's important to rank well in all countries. I've always figured that even though it would be good to integrate country into the URL somehow to indicate to the engines that this content is meant for a certain country (either by using local TLDs or indicating using Webmaster Tools that a certain subdirectory or subdomain is targeting a country specifically), there are multiple countries with the same language (for instance, they speak French in France but also in Belgium), which could cause duplicate content issues: www.webshop.com/be/fr/french-product-name
International SEO | | DocdataCommerce
www.webshop.com/fr/fr/french-product-name I guess it won't matter much whether you use fr.webshop.com, www.webshop.com/fr or www.webshop.fr, it's mostly the decision IF you want to include country somehow. What do you all think, is this important? Or is the multi lingual component enough for pages to rank well in several countries? For instance, if we were to use the language component only: www.webshop.com/fr/french-product-name Would this have the potential to rank well in both the French speaking part of Belgium, as well as France?
