Drop in rankings after gaining new link

Hi everyone
I have seen an odd trend in my rankings over the past 6 months that I would like to hear your experiences about.
Everytime a get a new link I see an imediate minor drop in rankings only to bounce back to a higher level tah before.
Has anyone seen a similar trend in their rankings and what might be causing it? I have made no changes to the site during the link building process.

I've seen other people talk about a dip then a bigger rise. I don't know from personal experience though, as I tend to monitor my traffic and conversions rather than rankings. How is your traffic doing?

Creating new url structure for inbound links
In an effort to make is easier for our clients to link to content on our site we intend on creating a simpler url structure for them: site.com/1234 will 301 to site.com/xyz/abc/1234-this-is-where-we-want-you Is there a danger of creating new 301's just for this purpose, the goal here is to make it easier for clients to link to content and thus garner more inbound links.

Best to create a new blog as a subsection or as a new site?
Our company has a blog "feature" or "theme" that we'd like to publish every week at least. Should we create a subsection of our current company blog? Or should we register a new domain specifically for the feature? The latter would allow us to do some linking back to the main website, and would probably be good in terms of future career flexibility / personal branding for whoever writes it.
