Why Would Google Webmaster Tools State More Links Than Details Show?
-
I am trying to clean up links. I've gone into webmaster tools and it reports that I have 216 links from a particular domain. When I click thru to get details it reports all the links point to 1 page, then when I click on that page it only reports 1 inbound link.
The links are coming from a directory site which appears to have been penalized.
OSE doesn't report any links from this domain.
Should I be overly alarmed? How can I determine what is correct, and whether I should take action (the site wants to charge me to remove each url).
Thanks in advance.

All these link reporting tools rely on crawlers unfortunately, none of which will perform the same as each other. Alan. You might want to use a couple of tools and work with the summary of their data. Also remember that the crawl freshness & accuracy will be different between different tools. It could be that the links existed and have since been deleted in their own site revamp.
Especially run the same report through Bing's Webmaster Tools for a "second opinion".
And btw, Google has been clear it looks down on sites that are charging to remove links. I seem to remember Google saying you could even report such sites. I'll see if I can find the confirmation of that.

You may be able to do a "site:domain.com" search of the directory to see how many pages are linking to you, that have been indexed by Google. You can also try using a crawler such as Xenu Link Sleuth or Screaming Frog to crawl the directory, and determine how many pages are linking to you.

Subdomain links vs root domain links? Are the less valuable?
I am determining the value of links we get. Is a link on a subdomain less valuable vs one on the root domain? How less valuable would you consider a subdomain link? For example blog.site.com vs site.com/blog What other metrics would you take into consideration for the value of a subdomain link?

What is the importance of root domains linking to your website in Google's rankings? I notice our competition has a much higher number on keywords I'm analyzing. Thank you!
I've noticed our competition has a much higher number of "root domains" linking to their page than we do. Is this simply a result of more websites linking to them? How long does it normally take to build up these numbers/rankings? (I'm assuming it's a concerted effort, which I'll be researching.) Thank you!

Google sending warnings about Artificial or Unnatural links in Google Webmaster Central
Has anyone seen warnings about Artificial or Unnatural links notice show up in their Google Webmaster central yet? I just looked at each of our clients and had not but after reading the Search Engine Land article at http://searchengineland.com/google-warning-more-about-bad-link-networks-117079 I was wondering what your thoughts were regarding this topic? We are not purchasing links for our clients sites but definitely going out their and building links. Article concerned me that I may run into issues for my link building clients. Thoughts?

Why do my inbound links hardly ever show up?
I'm sure this question has been asked before but I couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. Basically, I'm trying to understand why the inbound links I've created hardly ever show up in Webmaster Tools or Open Site Explorer, when other (relatively new) sites have hundreds of them. For example, I'm building a small niche site for which I have written all original content; some product reviews, some more general articles. Then I have rewritten the articles and posted them on popular Web2.0 sites to find human traffic as well as building authority through the links. I've linked some of the smaller sites together to form a wheel for additional authority. I've pinged the off-site articles and some of them have been indexed but the links don't show up in, even after a couple of months. I've checked the articles for duplication, just in case, and they're all 80-90% unique, or more. I've done similar things for other small sites and the links sometimes show up, but it takes 4-6 months which seems ridiculous. It's frustrating when I'm doing everything by the book (as far as I'm aware) and getting nowhere in the SERP's, while other sites have hundreds of links from spam blogs with poor quality, unrelated content and are sitting on page 1. I've also bookmarked the off-site articles and submitted the RSS feed where appropriate. My intention was to continue adding content on and off site but it just seems pointless if it never has any value. I just don't know what else I'm supposed to do. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. The URL of the site I'm currently working on is www.impact-wrench-reviews.com. Thanks, Tom.
