Are multiple sites needed to rank one website?

My SEO guy for a mortgage website says that we should have 30 websites, with about 250 pages each on each site plus 50 blogs in order to even think of ranking for mortgage keywords. Is that correct?

Honestly. Being really honest here.
I would find a different industry for my focus.
Your target is really really really really tough. You have arrived late to this fight and your competitors are fierce, armed to the teeth, occupy ALL of the highest ground and have spent $x00,000 or more to acquire their positions. Lots of them cheat too.
The only way that I would enter this niche is if I was Mr Mortgage, had a really big company with very deep resources behind me and I was able to service all of the clients myself. This ground will be very expensive to attack if you expect to be even marginally competitive.
My money says that you will get your ass kicked. I think this is a very safe bet.

Thats exactly what I am trying to figure out. It seems to me that instead of creating 10000 of articles for the 20 websites, it might be better to create 5000 good quality posts and put them on other blogs or sites, and link to my site that way. Your thoughts?

What he's trying to say is that you need to build links to be able to get your website to rank well. However, EGOL is right in that this would not be sufficient. You would be better off spending that time generating great content for your own site, reaching out to other bloggers to post your content on their site (unique content of course) and creating some sort of newsletter to try get contact info from people in a different way.

lol..... I think that he has underestimated the difficulty.
But, at least his communication has let you know that extreme and probably sneaky measures will be needed.
I am not saying that I would take his advice... I probably would not do that type of website building. But, I agree with him that you must be willing to spend a worthy amount to compete.

Off-site company blog linking to company site or blog incorporated into the company site?
Kind of a SEO newbie, so be gentle. I'm a beginner content strategist at a small design firm. Currently, I'm working with a client on a website redesign. Their current website is a single page dud with a page authority of 5. The client has a word press blog with a solid URL name, a domain authority of 100 and page authority of 30. My question is this: would it be better for my client from an SEO perspective to: Re-skin their existing blog and link to the new company website with it, hopefully passing on some of its "Google Juice,"or... Create a new blog on their new website (and maybe do a 301 redirect from the old blog)? Or are there better options that I'm not thinking of? Thanks for whatever help you can give a newbie. I just want to take good care of my client.

Rank a site that was 301'd
We had a customer that had 2 sites. They left us, and 301'd site A to site B. Things didn't go well. Now, a year later they want to use us again. Ideally, I would undo the 301. Has anyone done this? Would I be better off starting with a new domain? If you've done it, how long before it started to rank like you expected/hoped?

301 redirecting old content from one site to updated content on a different site
I have a client with two websites. Here are some details, sorry I can't be more specific! Their older site -- specific to one product -- has a very high DA and about 75K visits per month, 80% of which comes from search engines. Their newer site -- focused generally on the brand -- is their top priority. The content here is much better. The vast majority of visits are from referrals (mainly social channels and an email newsletter) and direct traffic. Search traffic is relatively low though. I really want to boost search traffic to site #2. And I'd like to piggy back off some of the search traffic from site #1. Here's my question: If a particular article on site #1 (that ranks very well) needs to be updated, what's the risk/reward of updating the content on site #2 instead and 301 redirecting the original post to the newer post on site #2? Part 2: There are dozens of posts on site #1 that can be improved and updated. Is there an extra risk (or diminishing returns) associated with doing this across many posts? Hope this makes sense. Does 301 redirecting a site multiple times keep the value of the original site?
Hi, All! If I 301 redirect site www.abc.com to www.def.com, it should pass (almost) all linkjuice, rank, trust, etc. What happens if I then redirect site www.def.com to www.ghi.com? Does the value of the original site pass indefinitely as long as you do the redirects correctly? Or does it start to be devalued at some point? If anyone's had experience redirecting a site more than once and they've seen reportable good/bad/neutral results, that would be very helpful. Thanks in advance! -Aviva B
