Google referral drop after setting preferred domain
-
Hey all, After doing a lot of research, and verifying here in the forum, I set our site's preferred domain on monday. We had no preferred domain set for years, but we were already redirecting the non www site to the www one. So, it was evidently an oversight. The day after I set the preferred domain (Jan 29) our google referral traffic hit an all time low. Any other thoughts on the cause? Any ideas on why setting a preferred domain would be a bad idea? Our site is www.mnn.com. Thanks!! Lisa

Thanks! Follow-up info. I looked a little deeper and noticed that after our CMS upgrade, we saw a loss in google.com/URL referral traffic. If I understand that correct, that's the traffic that comes from a referral link someone pulled from Google.
I know we had a bunch of 404s that have since been rectified, but we haven't recovered. Is there a portion of GA tracking code attributed to google.com/URL that we may have inadvertently dropped?
Thanks for helping me peel back the pieces of this SEOnion.

I am assuming by Google Referral you are not talking about Google Organic or Google PPC, correct? (Some people may consider "Google Referral" to mean "traffic from Google including organic/AdWords" so I just wanted to ask to make sure I am understanding the question clearly)
Assuming you are talking about Google Referral traffic, did you notice any changes in Direct Visits or Organic Visits on the 29th? A big change in Direct and/or Organic on the 29th may mean that there's simply a change in the way your analytics tool is tracking traffic sources.
If the only thing that has dropped was Google Referral traffic, then I think that Google's new Image Search is likely to blame. Google Image searches used to be tracked as Google Referral since the webpage was loaded in the background, whereas the new version does not load the webpage and thus is not tracked by Google Analytics/web analytics as a Google Referral visit. If this is the case, then it's likely it's simply just a coincidence that you noticed the drop in Google Referral traffic the same day the new Google Image Search was made available for a lot of people.
Here's a blog post showing similar declines in visits - http://www.webpronews.com/image-search-changes-google-said-would-be-good-for-webmasters-might-be-hurting-some-sites-2013-01

Google My Business app search report
What is the deal with the search reports in the Google My Business app? I downloaded this app so prospective customers could message my business, and when I look at the search reports on the app, the results seem nonsensical. According to google analytics my business receives pretty steady traffic every day. Why does the report say that I receive zero visitors one day and 400 the next? (See the screenshot below) 4yLRCHG

Filters for referral bots ineffective
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. I've been trying to block spam from my client's analytics for over a month and I just can't seem to get it right. I am beyond frustrated. Here is a list of the filters I have: http://imgur.com/a/SVvEA#0 And here is referral traffic from them regardless: http://imgur.com/a/SVvEA#1 Specifically this is what the filter looks like. Am I doing something wrong here? http://imgur.com/a/SVvEA#2 I have also put a filter in place to block traffic from Russia, and it doesn't seem to be working 100% either. http://imgur.com/a/SVvEA#3 On top of that, it seems anytime I do manage to block something, another site just pops up in its place. Is it endless? My clients are very small local business and this is absolutely ruining their analytics. I can't even show them their traffic reports since it's absolutely meaningless with all this spam. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Paid Search Referral
I have a brand new site with a paid search referral in my G&A, but we are not running any adwords or any paid marketing for it. The referral is "not set" so I do not know where it is coming from.

Google Tag Manager breaking integration
Using Live Chat's (www.livechatinc.com) Google Analytics integration was populating events and virtual pageviews into my analytics account. I've since added Tag Manager and moved my analytics tracking code into there, but since doing so, the integration no longer seems to work as there is no population of either events or pageviews anymore. Anyone else had any experience of something similar? Any other suggestions (beyond not using GTM for analytics code anymore)? I was considering setting up the event tracking code manually in GTM, but not really sure how to do so seeing as I'm not sure what to fire the different events on. This is the live chat JS code:

Facebook referral
Olympic athletes in track & field and BMX use our product in their training. When they discuss how they use our product on Facebook, we get a boost in traffic. However, all I see in programs like Woopra is facebook.com in the URL, but not the actual page. How do I determine which FB post with a link to our site is causing the increase in traffic? Best,
