Google SERPS for similar Keywords?
-
I have website which is being listed for a keyword which is not in the site. It seems that google is using a Thesaurus to find words with similar meaning.
Is this right? How could this be used for SEO purposes?

I'm currently reading a book called "In the Plex" by Steven Levy which talks about how Google got started. They talk about how Google learned to predict relevance. I'll paraphrase the example because I don't have the book in front of me.
Let's say someone typed in the search phrase - i want to buy a cat, and they get their page of search results. But let's say that they immediately go back and do another search. (This tells Google that their results didn't provide an answer). So this time they type in, i want to buy a kitten. Now, Google knows that cat and kitten are relevant to each other. Similarly, if their next search was i want to buy a devon rex then Google knows that cat, kitten, and devon rex are all similar terms. Of course, the algorithm wouldn't change for just one user's search but rather if hundreds of people were interchanging cat for kitten then eventually the algo learns that they are relevant to each other.
So, how can you use this for seo purposes? Check out this search for i want to buy a cat -cat The "-cat" tells Google not to include searches that use the word cat. So, you get results that Google thinks are relevant to I want to buy a cat. From this search I can see that I should also be targetting the words, kitten, persian, siamese, main coon, etc.
This is a quick off-the-top-of my head example, but you could certainly play with it.

I have a site that uses the words "photo" and "photographs" but google sends traffic for pictures, pics, images, etc. Maybe someone is linking to me with those as anchor text.... but I believe that google knows that my site should get that traffic.

This has always been the case to a degree.
If you put the tilde in before a keyword Google will show you other words it thinks mean the same thing by highlighting them in the SERPs.
For example, searching for '~poker' also highlights "POKE", "card games" and "hold 'em" as synonyms on the first page.
You can use Google Sets - http://labs.google.com/sets - to also find related keywords that you are targeting.
Again for example, putting in poker, casino, gambling and horse racing also gives: bingo, blackjack, roulette, bet, football, craps, baccarat, keno, video poker and more!
Finally searching for a keyword and scrolling to the bottom of the SERPs gives you a "Searches related to KEYWORD" section, which you can also use to see what you may rank for.
As for how to use this info, well...
Firstly you can start by adding a few of the related keywords into your copy (I like to do this at the start of writing copy, but no reason you can't edit it later). You don't want to get rid of all instances of your primary keyword, but once it's on the page 3 or 4 times already there's no harm in substituting synonyms where appropriate.
Secondly you can use these related keywords to build new content. This has advantages of allowing potentially a second listing, a higher listing for the synonym and by interlinking the pages improving your main keyword's importance with onpage SEO.
I'll have a think if there's anything else that could be significantly improved by having this info, but it should be enough to get you going

Is it worth creating a page for misspelled keywords?
I had thought the answer to this was no with the way Google search corrects mispellings. But in Google webmaster tools queries for a page I see the page ranking for a misspelled keyword. And looking at Key Word Finder it tells me the search volume for that keyword is high. But, when I search for the keyword myself it Google it auto corrects the results to the correct spelling. Is it worth creating a page for misspelled keywords?

Why do my keyword ranking differ from the results on Google ?
I've been working on a specific campaign for a couple of days, and been noticing that my keyword ranking is much different on my campaign than in reality. I tried my keyword on Google (with the same settings I have on my campaign) and my keyword ranks at #5 instead of not in 50, as indicated on my campaign. Can someone give me a hint on this issue ? Thank you !

Replacing Metas and Keywords
How often we need to replace our meta titles, meta descriptions and keywords so that we are able to find which one works and which does not. Can we make some schedule like on monthly or quarterly basis. What are the best practices in this regard?

Does SEOmoz account for keyword variations?
If I want to know my rank for bank account, do I need to list bank accounts as well or will my ranking include variations? Also, if I use the word bank as a keyword, will any search that contains the word bank (even when other words are included) count towards the ranking for that word? Or would I need to add additional keywords like dallas bank, local bank, etc?

Targeting nearly identical keywords
Hi, I have a website selling home furniture and I can't work out the best way to target keywords relating to sofas/couches. They both have very similar search volume and so I would like to target both. However, I obviously can't create different pages for couches and sofas as this will likely be seen as duplicate content, I also think it wouldn't read well if the content swaps between using couch and then sofa. I would really appreciate some advice on how best I can target both keywords. Thanks in advance!

Google Webmaster Keyword Significance.
In my google webmaster tools the most significant keyword google attaches to my site is word 'VAT' as in, Value Added Tax. Followed by Basket. I can see why this is, as the word VAT and Basket is on every product page, but it really is not a keyword I want to target. Does this have any negative effect on other keywords I am targeting? What should I do about this? Here is the site: https://www.loveelectronics.co.uk

How do I know I have chosen the right keywords?
Hey everyone, I have been working in business dev for just over 3 years in seo/sem. Needless to say I was hooked right away and I think I am finally ready to start something on my own. I have started some work for a client who does not want to spend lot of money(what else is new). They manufacture watches and handbags and have over 2 hundred retailers across Canada. They currently have no online presence with with the site they have now.On top of that they have decided they want to start selling their products online. Also they want to target retailers as well as the general public. So I started thinking how can I use keyword phrase that would attract both retailers and end users I thought a good keyword phrase "buy stylish cheap watches and handbags online in Canada" that has a lot of opportunity because it has several keywords in the phrase, and can be broken down to target several 3 word key phrases. I have checked out Google's Keyword Suggest as well as WordTracker, and found that the phrase as a whole has very little traffic value. However there is tons of traffic when broken up.An example would be. Buy stylish watches online, buy affordable watches online and so on and so on. How do I know If I have chosen the right keywords if my client doesn't have the funds to test them all using PPC? This is my first client and I really don't want to mess this up.They are really good people and I would like to do right by them. Can anyone give me some advice. Great know my keyboard wont let me put in a question mark lol, thankfully its the weekend.
