What is the verdict on using negative text indent on a slider
-
Hi,
I am trying to work out the best way of developing a slider on a page which may include text that I'd like indexed by search engines.
One method I've read about is to use negative text indent, but people seem undecided on whether this is a good / bad / fine technique with regards to SEO.
I'd be interested in hearing the communities views and experience on this.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Willem,
This is a question that's subject to continuous debate. On one hand, Google says over and over again, in no uncertain terms, not to hide text. On the other hand, folks from the Search Quality team at Google have said that navigational elements hidden with CSS wont hurt you if they are there for the benefit of the user.
Google will index navigational elements hidden by CSS, and won't penalize you for it, but it's not always clear how much weight and authority is passed through these elements.
So I'm not a huge fan of negative indent text. It's only a personal preference but I prefer to use CSS classes of none and hidden. Another favorite technique is to use javascript type menus that degrade gracefully when javascript is turned off. For example, take a look at my member profile on SEOmoz - the part at the bottom which contains "comments" and "blog posts".
If you turn off javascript (you can do this with the MozBar) you'll see ALL the menus degrade gracefully and become visible in the browser.

Use Internal Search pages as Landing Pages?
Hi all Just a general discussion question about Internal Search pages and using them for SEO. I've been looking to "noindexing / follow" them, but a lot of the Search pages are actually driving significant traffic & revenue. I've over 9,000 search pages indexed that I was going to remove, but after reading this article (https://www.oncrawl.com/technical-seo/seo-internal-search-results/) I was wondering if any of you guys have had success using these pages for SEO, like with using auto-generated content. Or any success stories about using the "noindexing / follow"" too. Thanks!

How can I index several systems used for my website?
My site is built on PHP, but has a help.website.com page based on a helpdesk platform. I also have a wordpress blog. So, these are three "different systems" under the same domain. When I crawl my site, neither the blog nor the help page show up. How can I make them show up? Thanks!

Image Alt Text: Do I Need to Link my Image for it to Count?
Hi I learned from a very senior SEO that I must link my images if I want Google to read my alt tag for my images. I don't believe this though... is it true? If the answer is not true (which I suppose it is), then maybe you can help me answer this: 1. was he confused or why would he tell me this? 2. i didn't know what i should do so now, whenever i embed an image on my blog posts, i just link them to the blog post in which the image shows... in essence, by clicking the image, the page gets refreshed. does this sound like a good strategy for images? thanks in advance!!!

Text hidden by button?
The issue: text on a page available only by pushing a button or clicking Read More and the text slides up via AJAX. Will Google penalize a site doing that via hand edit? I think that according to Matt Cutts, as long as the text is available to the user then it's ok. I want to double check on this.

Domain taken. Which is better? Using hypens or longer domain.
I am wanting to set up an e commerce site and the domain name that I want is taken. I am considering using a domain that has the main keyword I want to rank for as the domain. I have heard chatter of google penalizing these types of sites and it seems that it hasn't come about. This is something that I would like to test out. So if "electricscooters.com" is taken, should I use "electric-scooters.com" or "electricscooters4less.com" Just wondering if the hyphenated or the longer domain will rank higher. The site won't be spammy at all, I will carry a few different companies that offer similar products. So for this case, I would only sell scooters from a few different manufacturers. Feedback would be appreciated!

What is the best practice to use amazon affliate links in blog posts? I have read different opinions on this, and want to be sure I'm using best practices. I sometimes link to amazon with an affiliate link on some of my posts, and am working on a top ten Christmas gift ideas for Children born with Down syndrome with lots of affiliate links on it. I'm want to be sure I'm using best practices when adding links like this. Tanks!
