Should I have content on my home page or links to my articles
-
Hi, i have asked this question a couple of times without any luck so i am hoping third time lucky.
My site www.in2town.co.uk has dropped in the rankings for two of my important keywords, lifestyle magazine and lifestyle news, so i am just wondering if i have to much content on the page for google to understand what the page is about.
i am thinking to just have the links on my page instead of the intro to the articles, for example another online magazine does this,
Can anyone please let me know if i should keep the intro to the articles or if i should go with the links idea like femalefirst does to help google understand that we are a lifestyle magazine
any advice would be great

It isnt that hard, there are many magazine style websites that look good and offer a wealth of information on their homepage to attract interest from potential visitors.
For example, if you google " ronaldinho recalled by brazil " here in the UK, this comes up http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2266523/Ronaldinho-recalled-Brazil-glamour-friendly-England-Wembley.html
That is an inner page within the newspapers website that ranks for this, your website should rank for your " keywords " via your articles or pages within your website.
You can rank a homepage, however in your case it is difficult as it is hard for the search engines to establish exactly what your homepage is about or targeting or relevant for, given the amount of different items on that page.
many websites do rank with very little content, possibly for a number of reasons, possibly using techniques they should'nt i cant really comment on this without seeing these sites.
But its not hard to optimise a magazine style website, its actually an ideal site to optimise given the amount of content going on it.

thanks for this craig, can you let me know what steps i should do please and how i would do them, so i can get the ball rolling.
I am seeing lots of different sites that have hardly no content on the home page that is ranking better than us, and i am seeing lots of sites that do not have as many pages as we do that rank better than us, so there is a problem that i need to sort out.
it is hard with it being a magazine site trying to optimise the landing pages

Well when doing SEO a page targets a couple of keywords maximum, having had a look at your site, your homepage has articles from building a business to something about Cheryl Cole.
So your homepage isnt really targeting a keyword as such and this will be a bit of a problem in my opinion.
You should have a page that is about the keywords that you want to rank for.
Your website is layed out in a magazine style format, which is fine, id try and target your keywords on other internal pages rather than changing your homepage layout.

Should my home page be ranking for services provided?
Hello, Should I be tracking and trying to rank my home page for the services we provide? For example, I have separate pages for services that I will be ranking for, but should I also be adding those same service keywords to my tracking list for homepage? Or just merely mention that we have those services on the homepage and leave the attempted ranking of those for their service page? I hope that is clear... Thanks in advance

Page Analysis - Helping Product Pages Outrank Search Results Pages
Hi! We have a lot of our search results pages that have been indexed and outrank our product pages and in some instance the actual product pages barely show up at all. Here is an example query that includes our brand name: http://goo.gl/cgB6W So, we have loads of actual product pages, video pages, etc that should be showing up here, but are not and this is just one example. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of these Search Results pages out there and utlimately we would love to de-index them altogether, but it's going to have to be carefully done. So, was wondering if anyone would want to check out one of our product pages and give any feedback as to what we could change to possibly improve rank or to make them more search friendly or hopefully to help them rise above these indexed search results pages? Here is an example product page: http://goo.gl/2R4IT Thanks!! Craig

Too Many On-Page Links
Hi, I did a SEOmoz campaign and got results today, One of the results is Too "Many On-Page Links" when i am drilling down, i see that that's include inside links. for example, i sale food, i have my main department window - inside i have 30 products - each product is linked to a detailed page about the product. so automatically i have 30 links - not including all the others in this page, and i easily get over 100 and even sometimes 200 is this a big issue? does it damages my SEO? If yes, is there a way to write the HTML in a way that internal links like that wont be counted? Thank you SEOWiseUs

Too many links on product pages
Hello, What do you do if there are too many links on product pages? With 18 products per page, there's 2 links per product for 120 links on many pages. There's 50 products in many categories, categories are at most 1 click from the home page. Should we use pagination or not? Thanks

Should one page with markers or six separate pages?
Hi - I'm working on a site that was set up with 6 bios on one page, with markers jumping to each person's name. I was thinking about separating those into 6 different pages, but not sure if that's the right thing to do. Advice about keeping the bios on one page vs splitting them up? (Am I more likely to rank for those peoples' names if I have a unique page, or is the one page url with each different marker in it, just as good?) Ranking well for those names isn't a huge goal of the site, but it would be nice to make the choice that would help with that rank. Thanks for your input Emma

E-Commerce product pages that have multiple skus with unique pages.
Hey Guys, With the recent farm/panda update from google i'm at a cross roads as to how I should optimize product pages for a project i'm working on for a client. My client sells tires and one particular tire brand can have up to 15 models and each model can have up to 30 sizes. IE: 'Michelin Pilot Sport Cup' comes in 15 different sizes. Each size will have it's unique product page and description bringing me to my question. Should I use the same description on every size? I do plan on writting unique content for each tire model however i'm not sure if I should do it for every size. After all the tire model description is the same for every size, each size doesn't carry any unique characteristics that I can describe. Thanks in advance!
