Proximity for local intent searches
-
Based in the UK, I can see clear differences in search results for terms that Google considers have local intent, based on location. I'm interested in the community's experience of how far in distance local intent reaches. Does it depend on the search?, e.g. If I search for restaurant will it have a different local intent radius to a coffee shop etc.
-
I'd disagree that it's fully on or fully off based on my experience, but I'm sure that it's different depending on country, ability for Google to judge location/intent etc.

Hi Greg, thanks for taking the time to reply. I've outlined some further thoughts on my investigations around the size of the radius Google is using when considering local intent in my comments to Dana. Interested in other members experiences.

Hi Dana, that's an interesting insight about the major competitor outside the city limits. Most of my focus has been on results that don't offer Google Places/Google+ Local but still have local intent. It appears that the ranking boost from local intent is either fully-on or fully-off, because I can rank #1 for approx 40miles from the location of this particular service, but at 50 miles I'm on page 3. I am carrying on my testing, just interested in other members experiences.

Hi Blaine, Dana,
Good remark Dana. These competitors that are further away from the Centroid are the interesting ones to study since they probably have done something very well in order to overcome the bias... number of reviews (keywords in reviews?), great citations, incoming geographic anchor text, etc.

Hi Blaine,
Can you please explain what you mean by "how far in distance local intent reaches"?
In the case of Google, your browser (desktop) will by default detect your location and then return results based on this. So if it detects that you are based in for example "Burnley" it will return pages and "places" (Local Pack) that are relevant as to your search (keyword) and location. There indeed is a Centroid Bias whereby Google will privilege organisations with a physical address closer to what Google Maps considers the centre of the location (town/city) your search originates from... Is this what you were referring to?
You probably knew all this already and I just stated the obvious... which then in turn means I probably didn't understand the question
Cheers
Greg

In my experience, the area covered by the result map depends entirely on the results that Google feels are relevant. Here, I've seen a map far wider than the size of the city for a specific search because there's a major competitor outside the city limits.
Try searching for things that are a bit more industrial and therefore outside the city limits (usually) and see how it varies from the more neighbourhood-specific searches like coffee shop.

Amount of time for info from local directories to show up in search engines
How long does it typically take for data to start showing up in search engines when you register on local directories and the yellow pages? For example, outside of google and bing, how long would it take for info to show up in the engines if I registered with the services on Get Listed?

Google Places, Google+ Local, or both?
I understand that Google is in the process of merging Google Places into Google+ Local, but the current state is very confusing. There are still two separate signup pages, and neither even MENTIONS the other. If someone is establishing a business web presence today, what should we set up?

Metadata stored in images read by search engines?
Does anyone know if metadata stored in images is read by search engines? My company stores images in digital asset management systems and metadata keyword tags are added to the images, so they can easily be found within the system. Since these keywords are stored in the image file, I was wondering if search engines can read them once the image is placed on the website, but I'm not finding any evidence of this in my research.

What are you most concerned about or interested in for Local Search?
Hi All, I'm speaking to a local SEO meetup at the end of this month. If you were attending (hypothetically), what would you be most interested in hearing about for local search? The audience is a mix of SEO professionals, web developers, internet marketers, and business owners. I suspect that there will be a number of people who understand the foundations of SEO, though not all of them will be practiced at implementing it. I believe the number of people who get really indepth with Local is quite small. At the moment, I'm thinking about covering things such as: The local search universe in general--which data sources are doing what these days, where it's heading. Google Local+ recent changes Migration to Local+, data cleanup, merging (or not merging!), and other Local+ nuances Current ranking factors, and where I think they're going. I'd love to hear, and greatly appreciate, any ideas you might have. Cheers, Bede

New Local Tracking Number for Places vs an 800 Number.
I am having a problem with local search for my business. I submitted the same NAP (Name, Address, Phone) info to Google Places as I have submitted via LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. Here is the issue. The local number that is being used does not have any way to track calls, meaning the phone company (xo communications) does not give us the number of incoming calls. To add call tracking to the local numbers through our PBX system is very expensive, $2000 per store. Also to transfer this local number to a call tracking company (like callsource or whoiscalling) is a lot of trouble and not an option either. I need to track the call count somehow so I have two options left. 1) Get a new local number (that is also a tracking number through a phone tracking company) and then submit this to Google Places, LocalEZE and Universal Business Listing. The issue with this is that all of our citations will be re-set with a new local number, basically we'd have to do local SEO all over again. 2) Use the main 800 number in Google Places, this can be tracked. However, then our local number is on all of the NAP citations and Google Places will be the only web property with an 800 number. What are your thoughts?

Do citations in foreign languages help for local SEO in English?
Hi, All! If you're doing trying to get a foreign site (in English) to rank for local SEO in that country (in English),.do citations in the native language help? Google does seem to know that the business name in English and the foreign language are the same (e.g. if you search in English, it will return some results in the foreign language with the business name in the foreign language bolded). And addresses Google can also tell are the same, as evidenced by Google map searches in both languages pinpointing the same location. So - are citations in the foreign language relevant to help the page rank higher for a local query in English? Any thoughts? Thanks, Aviva
