Should I rename URLs to use hyphens instead of underscores?
-
Hello.
We are about to launch a redesigned and significantly expanded site that has traditionally used underscores as separators between words in its URLs.
Would you recommend replacing all the underscores with hyphens? That would then require many 301 redirects to maintain any links that might be out there.
Thank you!

Thank you, Nitin.

Thank you very much, Peter!

I'd tend to agree with Nakul on proceeding with caution - while Google doesn't necessarily treat "_" as a word separator, the URL is just one relatively small ranking factor. There are many risks in a site-wide 301-redirect, especially when you're redesigning. If the redesign runs into SEO trouble, you're not going to be able to separate the many changes, and that could delay fixing any problems.
The exception would be if you're planning to change a lot of the URLs anyway, as part of the redesign. Then, I'd go ahead and do it all at once. Hyphens are a nice-to-have - I'm just not sure that, practically, the risks outweigh the rewards. It does depend a lot on how you're currently ranking and whether the URLs are causing you any major headaches.

You should use a hyphen for your SEO URLs. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, but does ****nottreat an underscore that way. Google treats underscore as a word joiner — so seo_moz is the same as seomoz to Google. In fact using dashes over underscores will have a (minor) ranking benefit.
Also Note that 301 redirects passes 90%-99% value to redirected link so earlier you do it the better.
Hope it makes sense.

Thanks, Nakul!

If you are just doing a redesign that does not entail any URL changes, I would suggest keep them as is.
On a side note, how are you ranking compared to your competition ?
You could potentially test 1-2 pages on your site, change _ to - and see if it makes any difference. And yes, you would need to do 301 redirects and that would pass most (not all) of your link juice. It can and still work fine. So before you do something like this on a large scale, test it on a small scale if you can.
It also depends on how much authority your site has in Google ? Do your breadcrumbs show up in Google SERPS ? And so on.
I hope this helps you come to the right conclusion.

Magento URL change
We have a Magento website parked at HostGator. The site is comprised of both a PC and a mobile version. We changed the URL to a new one ... We made the domain changes in the ‘core_config_data’ (phpMyAdmin) ... We flushed the cache in the ‘File Manager’ part of cPanel (regular and mobile version) Currently we can access the http://newsite.com (on a desktop) with no problem ... We can also access http://m.newsite.com BUT… only from a desktop PC. When we try http://newsite.com from a MOBILE device, it routes to: http://m.OLDsite.com (it keeps going to the old URL) Need some help please. Thanks in advance!

No Keyword in URL
SEOMoz (and other platforms) advise that I need to add my keyword to the page URL, however as far as I'm concerned it has been, so why don't these platforms see it. My home page URL is www.salesandinternetmarketing.com, but apparently I haven't added the keyword internet marketing to the URL, what advice can you give me please? Lindsay

/out/ URLs in GWMTs
I am recently seeing some URLs come up as 404s in GWMTs for a client. They look like this: http://client-url/out/www.linkedin.com/company/client-linkedin-name /out/client-url/sub-directory/postname/ We thought they might have something to do with the social plugins but they are all over the place and they are sometime for internal pages on the site. Anyone run into these and know why they are happening?

Should we block URL param in Webmaster tools after URL migration?
Hi, We have just released a new version of our website that now has a human readable nice URL's. Our old ugly URL's are still accessible and cannot be blocked/redirected. These old URL's use a URL param that has an xpath like expression language to define the location in our catalog. We have about 2 million pages indexed with this old URL param in it while we have approximately 70k nice URL's after the migration. This high number of old URL's is due to facetting that was done using this URL param. I wonder if we should now completely block this URL param from Google Webmaster tools so that these ugly URL's will be removed from the Google index. Or will this harm our position in Google? Thanks, Chris

HTML url extension
I've read some information about the extension of an url. But i couldn't find a clear answer. What is better for SEO, an extension with html or without? /make-money-online/how-to-make-a-million-dollars-in-1-year/ or /make-money-online/how-to-make-a-million-dollars-in-1-year.html/ Is there a difference between a normal website or a blog?

URL Rewrite
We are trying to convince a client to do a massive rewrite from all URL's looking like this: "www.company.com/category/categoryId=82374" to something like "www.company.com/womens/jackets/rain" How would you describe the importance and impact of doing URL rewrites to an ecommerce site? What evidence/research can we share with them to convince them it is worth the time and effort to do?
