Automotive part / OEM / Manufacturer numbers
-
Hi All,
What's the best way to optimise pages for OE / Manufacturer Part numbers?
Disclaimer: All part numbers in this post are fictional. I dont want this post out ranking my client for real part numbers
Take this for Throttle Body for example:
WOODYS S-AB-Q.123.53G
This is the main part number from WOODYS (the manufacturer).
However, these are all variations of exactly the same product:
- Woodys 2.78972.11.0
- Woodys 2.78972.16.0
- Woodys 2.78972.20.0
- Woodys 2.78972.26.0
Oh, and car brands use OE numbers for these parts, such as:
-
VWA 9808e40923G
-
VWA 9808e40923L
-
VWA 9808e40923M
-
VWA 9808e40923P
-
VWA 9808e40923Q
These internal part numbers are vitally important as most of my clients customers are garages/mechanics so they're very likely to search on OE numbers.
So, would you suggest:
-
Optimising 10 different pages for the same product (using the part numbers in the URL, Title and H1). The problem is there's no unique content for these pages, only the part number varies, so this would likely get penalised for dupe content, or not enough unique content.
-
Optimising one page for all terms. If so, how do you suggest doing this to ensure all part/OE numbers rank well and part numbers are prominent in the SERPS?
Could Schema.org help here by marking up these EO numbers with the isSimilarTo property of the Product type? I'm trying to ensure these part number get equal presence in the SERP snippet when searched for, even though I can't physically include all these numbers in the Title tag, URL and H1 of one page.
3. Something else?
Thanks,
Woody

Thanks Tom,
I like the idea of anchoring links down to specific OE number sections using the H2 headings, my concern is what content would these sections contain?
You mention a brief description and history. The problem is there's nothing different about the product so the description/history would be exactly the same as the main product number. These number are literally alternative numbers for EXACTLY the same product.
Client did have option 1 set up and working when I came onboard and they did rank well for these OE numbers which brought in visitors/business. These pages had nothing more than a H1 Heading and one line of text on these pages containing OE number. I advised client to 301 these into main product page which also listed these OE number as alternate numbers.
In the short term I suspect this move will lose them visitors, until we build strength into main product page and in the long term protect their domain from a Panda penalty for thin content.
Would you agree?

This is a really, really tricky one. Here's how I see it:
I think you need to avoid running the risk of any duplicate content at all costs - this could certainly be an issue with option 1, as you have pointed out. With that in mind, I feel we have to rule that one out completely.
That leaves with optimising multiple products on a single page. How many products can be grouped together by manufacturer? For instance, is this feasible?
Page Title: Audi Exhausts, URL domain.com/audi-exhausts/ H1: Audi Exhausts
10-15 exhausts on the page with brief description and history.Page title: Mitsubishi Exhausts, URL domain.com/mistubishi-exhausts H1: Mitsubishi Exhausts
12 on the page with its own brief description and historyPage title: Audi Suspensions URL domain.com/audi-suspensions etc and so on.
That way, from a user perspective, at least they know that they've landed on a relevant page (or would click through to it via search). Products are missing from H1, titles and URLs - but those factors aren't that significant any more anyway. Provided that the products are on the page, I think you're fine.
If you can keep the page length to a reasonable size, you could have the parts listed next to each other high up the page with internal links. For instance, if you click on one part, the page moves to that part's section. You can achieve this by having something like a <a <="" span="">href="#PARTNUMBER"> href on the part number and/or image, that then links to </a>
<a <="" span=""></a><a <span="" class="webkit-html-attribute-name" data-mce-mark="1">name="PARTNUMBER"></a>Part Number
lower down the page.
With this way you're making a pretty rich content page, users are taken to a URL they will think is relevant and land on a relevant landing page, but then don't have to navigate off the page to find what they want. Plus, with the part numbers present on the page, it gives you a chance to link-build specifically for that part number. And because you might be trying to build links for a number of parts on one page, chances are that the page itself will become quite strong because of the links and social signals it will accrue over time.
That's one method, but would definitely consult others here and further afield.

Hreflang : mixing with/without country code for same language
Hello, I would like to display 3 different english versions of my website : 1 for UK, 1 for CA and 1 for other english users. It would look like this for a page: . (english content with £ prices) <link rel="alternate" href="https: xxx.com="" en-ca" hreflang="en-CA">(english content with $CA prices)</link rel="alternate" href="https:> <link rel="alternate" href="https: xxx.com="" en="" " hreflang="en">(english content without currency)</link rel="alternate" href="https:> I wonder if I can mix this hreflang without country code with hreflangs with country code for the 2 other specific versions... or if the hreflang without country code version will appear whatever the country, even if i specified it . In other terms, is hreflang="en" > hreflang="en-CA" + hreflang="en-GB" if tagged together on a same page? Thank you

301 v/s 302 Redirection on Homepage (Multilingual)
Hello, Our website: http://www.luxresorts.com currently has a default 302 redirection to http://www.luxresorts.com/en. We would like to do a 301 redirection instead of a 302 to http://www.luxresorts.com. Our concern is that the site is multilingual and we wonder what effect would the 301 redirection have on search engine crawlers and how would this appear on SERP. When a search is done on Google.com, the English version of our website appears and when on Google.FR, the French version appears. Would the 301 redirection change the way our website appear on Google? Grateful if you could help us out in understanding the pros and cons/best practices for our concern. Thanks in advance. Tej Luchmun.

Should you include domain / brand in Meta Title
Hello, I am trying to come up with a strategy for creating meta title information for my eCommerce store. I have read mixed reviews on the examples below. The first includes the company / brand in the meta title and thus is included in SE results. The second does not. Probably not a 'right' answer here so I look forward to answers with rationale... also open to a completely difference strategy all together! 1MR Vortex by BPI Sports - $Company_Name OR 1MR Vortex by BPI Sports - Pre Workout Supplement Thanks!

Main content - javascript/ajax
Hi, On most of our pages Javascript is displaying our main content, so it doesn't show up on the page source and I assume isn't being crawled by Google to the best of its ability. It's also not showing up on MOZ's page grader and crawl results, making analysis and testing harder. What's the easiest way, without having to completely redo our website, to have this content crawled by search engines and moz?

What would you pick? Species/Breed or Topic
If you'd like to take a look, the site under quesiton is http://ArkAnimals.Com. At the moment I am considering doing landing pages by topics and not by the type of animals. I will be blending both wild and domestic animals but how to best do this is confusing since so much has changed over the years. My competitors are focusing on animal types mainly and competition is fierce. Also the site attracts by three main topics not specific animals--so I want to be a bit unique which is why I am considering a topic driven focus. What would you recommend? Background This site has been online since 1994 and on its own domain for a long while. However, over time it has suffered from a lot of things--different designers, expansion, movement of content to niche sites and bad seo. LOL Once everything was on one site with sub directories. Then, it expanded and my online advisors recommended moving topics off into their own niche sites. So, I did that. Ugh. Now, much of that content is being integrated back as I am undergoing an intense revamp (the last one was a disaster). There are a few presenting problems that I could use your perspective and expertise--since I am too close to it. Problems for Needing Your Input The site is over 2600 pages with many in html and others in php. What is the best practice? Moving the remaining html pages over into php? Some of the pages that were not active have a redirect to the blog. I plan on doing page to page 301 redirects once I dig in--unless you have a better idea. There are a lot of well established links to some of the pages. How many topics are too many? I have a wide variety of content. First, the magazine format covered about six topics. Later, I began covering more pet related items and did a lot of different news summaries to keep it fresh. I want to dump the short outdated pages as many of them have obsolete links or are too short to add any value. Or should I update if they help with the seo rather than continue to let them dilute the site? Landing page or blog? Which is better, an index landing page or blog? At the moment the blog appears on the main index for freshness and the site attracts traffic for specific topics not animal breeds or species. I want to move the site from an educational site to serving as a main funnel for potential clients driving them to get on a list or to a niche site for sales related to the particular topic/training of interest. What your take on this if you were to tackle it? Any input would be greatly appreciated. My audience includes those who are pet owners, novice trainers, and animal lovers with no critter sense.

How And/Or If To Prune Footer Links
Hi, I have a site with a site-wide footer that currently has 28 internal links. The footer terms are the terms the pages are focused on. This footer is on every page of the site (hundreds of pages). Some pages of my site have 10 or so additional links pointing to internal and external pages (besides the footer) and some pages (like the homepage) have about 50 links besides the footer. I'm going for a half dozen new terms with new pages that I would be adding to the site-wide footer. Do you think I should trim the existing footer before adding these new terms? I guess I would remove the terms that show no real hope of ever getting to page one... like pages stuck in the 40s. Or, pages I for whatever reason don't care much if they rank or not. Would trimming it to a smaller number do more to help the remaining linked pages/terms? What do you think? Thanks!

What are the Best Practices for moving a blog from subdomain to domain/subcategory?
Howdy SEOmoz fans! (couldn't resist). I'm moving a wordpress blog from blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog. Trying to do it right the first time and cover all my bases. Issues I'm trying to handle correctly, in varying degrees of importance: External LInks Internal Links Google Friendly Traffic Routing in a dynamic environment (wordpress, 301, .htaccess, etc.) Thanks so much for any and all input!
