Is there such a thing as to many 301 redirects?
-
Our shopping cart automatically generates the URL for each product using keywords from the product titles, because of this EVERY TIME we change titles etc. the URL changes and a 301 is automatically generated. On a site with only about 550 pages in our sitemap and for indexing we have about 550 301 redirects. Does anyone know how google handles this? This seems like a terrible ratio of 301's to indexed pages. But I don't know if Google cares about this or not.
-
301 redirecting shouldn't be hurting you much unless you are getting 3 or more 301 redirects on the same URL. When you string together a bunch of 301's you stand the chance that Google will refuse to follow it after about 3 so in that case you would be in trouble.
Other than that you should be OK and once Google reads the 301's they will eventually deindex the old pages and your 301 ratio should go down.
I agree with the earlier response though that you should be mindful about changing product titles too many .

Chaining multiple 301s would be an issue (what I worry about above) but this sounds like the right process in migrating platforms. If the old pages didn't have back links, you will be able to remove the 301s.
You could create a million redirect rules but search engines will only care about the ones they find through back links.
Perhaps your new platform is capable of simpler URLs? Keywords in URLs and domains has lost its power so it might be better to create shorter, more stable URLs. A format like:
/products/product-name
would be ideal depending on category attributes. If a product can be in two categories, this URL won't create content duplication issues.

Hi, thanks for your response! Another issue we had was that when we switched carts we were actually able to condense our site, merge some pages which were related together into single pages. So we 301'ed the extra pages into the new condensed page which had the information from all of the current pages in it. Any chance that could have hurt our SERP's?

301 redirects dissipate link equity in the same way a link does. That means each one is slowly eating into the equity (PR).
Any that are created systemically would be bad design but it sounds more like this occurs when you rename a product?
In that case, why are the names changing so often? Perhaps there is a better business process you could follow to have long last naming? Change the page title all you like but the URL should be very long lasting by design.

Massive unexplained organic traffic drop; disappeared from Google
Hi there,
Search Behavior | | katelynroberts
Our site has experienced a huge organic traffic drop, specifically from Google. The drop occurred on Feb 19 and I've got no clue why it happened. We have not made any significant changes to the website and it doesn't look like there was an algorithm update last week. We don't have any Google penalties or indexing issues noted, and the drop isn't specific to any particular segment/region/keyword. What am I missing? Any advice or insight is super duper appreciated. Our site is a Wordpress/WooCommerice e-commerce site with a blog and long-standing #1 ranks for keywords related to our main product offering. Screen Shot 2024-02-26 at 3.12.25 PM.png

Strange Traffic Movements
Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this... I'm working with a client whose website is experiencing some odd organic traffic patterns. See screenshot attached. As you can see, there was a sudden cliff fall about a month ago, and then it recovered (almost) entirely. Then, a month to the day later, the same thing happened again. What is the likelihood that this is a data glitch vs an algorithm thing? Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated. Thanks,

Google Capital - Antitrust Conspiracy
I think we all have heard about Thumbtack breaking the rules w/ badges. Getting deindexed, then getting a 100M injection from Google capital and having the penalties removed: https://techcrunch.com/2014/08/20/service-marketplace-thumbtack-raises-100m-round-led-by-google-capital/ Our primary competitor is a different marketplace backed by Google Capital. Does anyone know of any low frequency products (reliant on SEO) backed Google Capital that has not won out within search? (i.e. is there any hope of competing against a low frequency marketplace after they have Google Capital backing?)

What's the best way to redirect mobile site?
Hi, We have a mobile website using a sub-directory domain.com/m/whatever-page/. Our mobile is completely separate site from desktop version. What's the best way to handle the redirection from mobile visitors and those that are searching from mobile and see desktop version in the search result? Appreciate anyone's expert advise. Thanks,

What to do with Redirects
I need some advise. I am remapping the eCommerce Categories to achieve a few goals: Have better landing pages - for a better user experience. I've been a bad boy - some crappy links. Panda did hurt. I've added layered navigation and faceted search. In order to achieve a better user experience I've had a to break up the old categories. For example, when you landed on these pages - you had to choose between different sets of gender and medal type. Model Name Mens Gold Mens Stainless Ladies Two Tone Mid-Size Yellow Gold Do you see? So - here is what I am doing.. I created a better menu to be a lot more specific for people who land on other pages to get there. Now they can goto mens model name and select stainless or whatever, if they want, to dig in there or use the layered navigation. What we also did is now you can even view 20 products on these pages too as well as see the layered navigation to filter. Now this is my question - I'm creating a list of these old categories and my plan is to 302 them to the search page with the faceted search. I have my search page globally, noindex, nofollow - is this the best strategy? How would you do it? Apart from Redirects - what have you , other SEOs, learned about layered navigation and faceted search - where can it cause issues for SEO?

Should I 301 images to parent post?
I'm using Yoast's wordpress seo plug in and a few months ago I enabled the feature that redirects all images to the parent post. This month I noticed a huge drop in my organic search results for images. I just did a crawl of my site and it looks like every image does indeed have a 301 redirect on it. I'm curious what the though is on this. Should I unselect that option? I was under the impression it wouldn't make a difference with traffic and actually thought it would help since it brought people to the post instead of just the image page for that picture. Thoughts?

Buying expired domains with PR and redirecting question :)
Hi, Might be a silly question but wanted to ask it anyway. Lets say I run a gifts website and this year I decide I want to try for a more competitive keyword 'Christmas Gifts'. Now each year I see a lot of search on for example 'Christmas Gifts 2011' and because of the search volume the EMD for this is gone (an affiliate has brought it or something). So the affiliate works hard on ranking it builds up say PR2-PR3 but when it comes around to renewing the domain they don't bother because 2011 search volume has passed and they move onto 'Christmas Gifts 2012'. My question is this: If I was to buy the 'Christmas Gifts 2011' when it expires and redirect it to my Xmas page would it pass the PR and give my new page a boost?
