Migrating to New site keywords question
-
We are converting an old static html ecommerce site to a new platform. The old site has excellent ranking for some of the products.
In order to maintain our ranking we will implement 301 redirects from old to new pages (as the urls will change to SEF).
I am using Googles Keyword tool (in adwords) and entering each page url of the old site (there are hundreds, I'm doing the top 50 in traffic) and generating a set of keywords, then sorting each list by global searches.
For each page, Google's Keyword Tool is giving me hundreds of keywords, but in meta tags there should be no more than 15, so I need a method to choose the keywords on the new page.
Question: in the new meta tags should we emphasize the most common keywords (as defined by most global searches) or the least common keywords?
I would hate to lose the good ranking for the least common (long tail) keywords.

How about focusing on the keywords and products that make you money?
My husband sells kits for model warships that shoot and sink each other. A high-volume keyword would be battleship, but that doesn't get us any sales. A low volume keyword would be uss iowa 1:144 scale turret cover, but that's a low-priced item that's not going to help us too much. For us, a different keyword makes much more sense.

Your original question asked what keywords to put in your META tags... That technique may have worked years ago, but META tags are worthless these days. So I think people were starting at square one to illustrate this fact.
Here's an idea - go to your competitors sites and look at their META tags (if they are silly enough to use them.) This will give you an idea what keywords (low or high competition/priority) they find important enough to target. Then you can go after those. (But don't put them in your METAs...)
And now a pointer for forum communications - try not to get so defensive. It's an ugly color and tonality never conveys well on internet forums.
Good luck!

Take your pick.
When you put these pages on the web they might be there for years so the small amount of time needed to make a decision can payback many times over with increased traffic and increased conversions.
I am trying to advice on best practices to maximize your return, not give you quick and easy.

I'm sorry I'm not making you feel helpful. You have been helpful.

Ok, got that and I agree that customer feedback and knowledgeable sales people are great reviewers of keywords and they are one of the primary sources we are using.
We have thousands of skus however and thus a we have a business need that the process be automated to whatever extent is possible.
We can ignore the Google Keyword tool results entirely - that's an option and perhaps a rationale one. But the Keyword tool is based on Google's own indices and therefore I think is a great source of keywords that have not appeared on our lists by other means. It also shows total searches and competition for those keywords so you can get a sense of what your competition is doing and how many pages already have those keywords pointed at them.
All that said, he question remains whether the most common or least common are more important to emphasize for SEO purposes.

whether most common or least common would be better for SEO
I use a lot more thought than picking the most common or the least. I consider the ones that best represent my product, the ones that I think people are searching for and the ones that I think will elicit clicks.
I also consider the power of my site and how I think it will rank against competitors for those specific keywords.
The google keyword tool is good for prospecting but when you combine it with a little knowledge of people, search engines, the power of your site, and your competitors you can get better performance.

I thumbed you down ssaltman--your replies aren't making me feel very helpful.

EGOL,
I have a very specific question regarding keywords generated by the Google Keyword tool - whether most common or least common would be better for SEO.
Your royal "we" makes you sound silly, but I'm figuring you hang around here because you know something about SEO.
If you google me, you'll see that I've actually built and sold companies before. I know something about SEO but I'm not arrogant enough to make assumptions.
My question was pretty specific. If you have an answer or comment on the question, I'd love to hear it.

We are telling you that we think you will make a lot more money with more knowledge.
We can't teach you the full scope of SEO in a forum. And we don't want to give specific advice on a site when we are guessing.
So, you can improve your knowledge or get assistance and probably make a lot more money. Or you can be satisfied with making less money.
I hope that this isn't a client site.

I'm not sure why folks seem to think I am completely new to this. We already captured all the incoming keywords and are implementing content and url nomenclature strategies around those.
Was just wondering if we should be using most common or least common google-generated keywords to boost SEO.
The rationale of using long-tail keywords with higher likely CTR vs. common keywords with lower CTR is compelling and I was trying to phrase to question to get feedback.
So far: question: 1, answers: 0

To line your new site up with the existing baseline of the old site, I'd be looking more at your stats than at the keyword tool. Go to your analytics and look to see which keywords were bringing you in the most traffic for each landing page and focus on those.
-
Well, let's take the question more generally then and ask:
which keywords should be emphasized in the content and the meta information: most common or least common?
-
Uh....ok
-
SSaltman,
If you're speaking specifically populating the keyword meta tag, you don't have to worry about it.

You are rebuilding a site and that is a great time to kick your SEO up a notch and make a lot more money. That is how it should be done.
You seem to be putting a lot of work into keywords and meta tags but I am not sure that you are focusing on the right things.
Have you considered spending a nice block of time improving your knowledge of SEO before making this move or hiring a pro to map out the changes that will kick the performance up nicely?
That's what I would do. I often get advice from other SEOs before making big moves. It pays.

Is 301 redirects a deal breaker for Migrating content or moving to new software?
I have this forum with about 2 million posts for 16 years on root of the domain. I am looking to switch softwares but the top ones won’t help setup 301 redirects. But I can still migrate all my members and all my content (threads/posts), would Google still reindex all our content or if we don’t setup redirects would it really kill our entire traffic for a long time or maybe just a month or so? I really want to migrate to software that isn’t forum based but rather something that offers courses, chat, live video streaming, subscription based etc. and this is the only way to do so OR to set it up on an entirely new domain OR subdomain but to me that is like starting all over from scratch? I could archive the forum to read only and set it up on subdomain or another root domain - then on the archived forum setup banners and a pop up linking to the new site or new subdomain? . This is such a hard decision for us as the current forum we have had for so many years has lost members posting from 1k a day to just a handful a day, our fb group though gets 1k a day so I’m trying to revive a site into something more modern and has all the training features we can offer as well.

Migration to https
Hi there, For several reasons we consider to switch from http to https. My question about this: Does this change impact organic search results since the URL changes? Is a simple 301 on the highest level enough to keep all of our positions with every page? Are there any other possible issues we might think about before deciding? I'm talking about a webshop with over 50k indexed pages and lots of running marketing channels all setted up based on the http URL structure. Thanks in advance.

Question about breaking out content from one site onto many
We have a website and domain -- which is well-established (since 1998) -- that we are considering breaking apart for business reasons. This is a content site that hosts articles from a few of our brands in portal fashion. These brands are represented in print with their own magazines so it's important to keep their presence separate. All of the content on the site is related to a general industry, with each brand covering a unique segment in the industry. For example, think of a toy industry site that hosts content from it's brands covering stuffed animals, electronics and board games. The current thinking is to break out the content from a couple brands to their own sites and domains. The business case for this branding purposes. I'm of the opinion that this is a bad idea as we would likely see a noticeable decline in search traffic across the board, which we rely on for impressions for our advertisers. If we take the appropriate steps to carefully redirect pages to the new domains what kind of hit should we expect to take from this transition? Would it make much difference if we were transition from 1 to 2 sites vs 1 to 4? Should this move be avoided all together? Any advise would be appreciated.

Questions about canonicals
Howdy Moz community, I had a question regarding canonicals. I help a business with their SEO, and they are a service company. They have one physical location, but they serve multiple cities in the state. My question is in regards to canonicals and unique content. I hear that a page with slightly differing content for each page won't matter as much, if most of the content is relevantly the same. This business wants to create service pages for at least 10 other cities they service. The site currently only have pages that are targeting one city location. I was wondering if it was beneficial to use a template to service each city and then put a canonical there to say that it is an identical page to the main city page? Example: our first city was san francisco, we want to create city pages for santa rosa, novato, san jose and etc. If the content for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, city were the same content as the 1st city, but just had the slight change with the city name would that hurt? Would putting a canonical help this issue, if i alert that it is the same as the 1st page? The reason I want to do this, is because I have been getting concerns from my copywriter that after the 5th city, they can't seem to make the services pages that much different from the first 4 cities, in terms of wording of the content and its structure. I want to know is there a simpler way to target multiple cities for local SEO reasons like geo targeted terms without having to think of a completely new way to write out the same thing for each city service page, as this is very time consuming on my end. Main questions? Will making template service pages, changing the city name to target different geographic locations and putting a canonical tag for the new pages created, and referring back to the main city page going to be effective in terms of me wanting to rank for multiple cities. Will doing this tell google my content is thin or be considered a duplicate? Will this hurt my rankings? Thanks!

404 Errors After Site Migration
Hello - I'm working on a website selling fashion accessories. The site just went through a site migration from Yahoo! to Big Commerce. Now we have a high level of warnings and errors from the crawl. Few are mentioning sites I never seen before on the Yahoo! platform. I also notice that the pages crawled has doubled. How can I fix or did I do something wrong with migration? I was running the website with minimal errors and now overwhelmed with errors all the error updates. If I can get some assistance on what could be wrong, I would greatly appreciate. Thanks.

Duplicate titles Question
Hi eveyone, I have around 1000 duplicate titles and meta description. The poblem was that I had pages in my home page and different pages had the same title. For example, index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/ /index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/N12//index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/N1444//index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/N1448//index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/N1448/P6//index.php/site/articles/should_you_eat_protein_every_2-3_hours_for_muscle_growth/N1452/I have 172 of the same page!So I took off all the pagination on my home page and just added 'click fo more'. When they click more, it takes them to the category. So my question is will google slowly start deleting or non-indexing these duplicate titles or pages as I have removed it from my website? (Just so that you know I added a canonical link and figuring out how to add page numbers to met titles and meta description tags for categories with pages)

How to turn WP site into Ecom site?
I have a couple of old wordpress sites that are old affiliate blogs. I currently sell products that are on amazon on these sites and sell quite a bit of volume. I have found a source and can afford the inventory to replace Amazon with my own product. So the dilema is how to turn these wordpress sites into ecommerce sites. The thing I am worried most about is that each site gets about 100-200 visitors a day for great buying keywords. I obviously don't want to lose my rankings. What are the options of turning a wordpress site into a store. I am not interested in plugins or some of the other solutions that make the store look very cheap and I would assume horribly convert. If you have inner pages ranking for keywords how does that work? Do the post pages become product pages? So to sum up I guess I am asking, what are the options that are of the higher quality that will also help me keep my rankings? Thanks
