How does OSE select top 10,000 links
-
Quick question about OSE, if you are extracting with excel all inbound links from a big site like IMDB.com, OSE only exports 10,000. However IMDB has alot more links then that.
I was wondering what criteria does OSE use to select those 10,000 links from the 100,000+ which IMDB has. Is it a random selection of those 10,000 links or does it select those 10,000 links based on metrics like DA or PA?
For the settings i have selected: followed + 301s, only external, pages on this root domain, group by domain.
Cheers,
Chris

You should be able to get a decent sample if you run an advance report and select to only display links from different IP addresses, that will just show you links from different sites so you won't be filling up your quota with multiple links from each page.
I hope that helps. Really just spend some time playing with the parameters in the Advanced reports you'll find you can get almost any mix you're after.

Is there anyway to take a random sample of links?

Hey Chris,
Thanks for the question.
If you're just exporting the CSV from the Inbound Links tab, it is going to be sorted by PA or DA so it will start with the highest authority pages and work down from there. If you want to view a more in-depth analysis of the back links you should look at doing an Advanced Report. That will allow you a lot more variable to apply and narrow the scope of your report.
Also, keep in mind that OSE is going to be capped at displaying 25 links per linking root domain. You can view more by drilling down into the domain itself from the linking root domain tab. It will be like this as an example:
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?page=1&target=page&sort=page_authority&group=0&site=www.imdb.com&return_page=1&return_target=page&from_site=wikipedia.org%2FI hope that answers your question. Let me know if you need anything else.
Cheers,
Joel.

Why do the competitive link analysis numbers not match the domain analysis?
There is only one area that our competitor out ranks us and that is in the total links on the root domain. But when i go to competitive link analysis we have more links then they do. Any ideas?

OSE - Group by Domain Export
When exporting inbound link data from OSE, it seems to lose the "group by domain" filter. Is it possible to download the data like that or do I need to filter through all the links myself? Thanks!

Does linking to relevant high authority websites effect your MozTrust or Rank?
Basically what the title says. I am having a hard time understanding why a compeitor with less linking domains and none of any real quality, they're all membership sites or partnerships, nothing to relevant to the industry. While we have links and articles on us from multiple magazines in our industry. As well as to relevant directories with high domain ranks. The only thing I noticed is they're linking to their clients website, which are all high authority websites. So do external links count towards your MozTrust or Rank?

Duplicate pages with canonical links still show as errors
On our CMS, there are duplicate pages such as /news, /news/, /news?page=1, /news/?page=1. From an SEO perspective, I'm not too worried, because I guess Google is pretty capable of sorting this out, but to be on the safe side, I've added canonical links. /news itself has no link, but all the other variants have links to "/news". (And if you go wild and add a bunch of random meaningless parameters, creating /news/?page=1&jim=jam&foo=bar&this=that, we will laugh at you and generate a canonical link back to "/news". We're clever like that.) So far so good. And everything appears to work fine. But SEOMoz is still flagging up errors about duplicate titles and duplicate content. If you click in, you'll see a "Note" on each error, showing that SEOMoz has found the canonical link. So SEOMoz knows the duplication isn't a problem, as we're using canonical links exactly the way they're supposed to be used, and yet is still flagging it as an error. Is this something I should be concerned about, or is it just a bug in SEOMoz?

Compare link metrics - What time frame is this in?
Hi, I'm comparing three sites and one of them I know is quite popular however a few of the social statistics are puzzling me; they've got a small amount of Facebook likes and times shared on twitter - Which just can't be right if it's all time. What's the time frame of this data? The last three months or? Thanks, Dan

Links from External Sites not Showing on OpenSite or Google Webmaster Tools
Hi, I asked this in another post, but didn't get a solid answer. For several websites I manage, I have access to their Google Webmaster Tools. When I put the site through there, or the link:// or SEOMoz's OpenSite link reporter, I get not even a fraction of the links that I know are pointing to the websites in question. Some of these links are from home pages or side columns, and some are from articles keep within a website, like at Inc.com. I wondered if the links in question were not themselves being indexed, but if I do a very specific search, I can pull them up in the search results. Is it just common knowledge that these link tools are not accurate? And to assume that somehow, search engines really do see all of the inbound links, even if our reporting tools don't. Thanks in advance!

Best way to use OSE Advanced Reports
I can see that Open Site Explorer's Advanced Reports feature is very powerful in terms of sifting through large amounts of link data, but does anyone have any useful tips on how to get the most out it? I want to use my 5 reports a month, but I want to make to maker sure I'm making the most of that allowance.

Any plans to allow direct comparison between a selected website (client) and top competitors?
Hi, I really like the SEOMoz keyword difficulty tool. It currently reports metrics between the top 10 positions. Is there any plan to introduce the facility to directly compare metrics between a selected website and that of other competing websites. For example, a clients' website compared to the top 10 results, or compared to a number of other selected competiors websites? Best wishes, David
