If bad links are now ignored why bother to resubmit a reconsideration letter?
-
So what I don't get is that Google says it will not trust and ignore these Spam type links so you lose only the value from those specific links. So if someone was hit with a penalty why should you bother to write a reconsideration letter if Google is supposedly just ignoring the value of the poor links anyway?
On the other hand in their message they do state if you are able to remove any of the links you can resubmit --- this is sending conflicting messages.
Back in the day you get your entire site hurt, now it seems like it can potentially just be a few keywords or pages.Does it make sense with the new roll out in March 2013 to still do a reconsideration request?
-
So what about links that show a high number of links (hundreds or thousands) but are quality websites. Do I disavow all those links just because they have a lot of links pointing to my site?
-
A lot of people who do penalty work will recommend that you use other sources outside of WMT such as ahrefs, OSE and majestic. However, I only use WMT and it seems to work for me.
I think that the reason why people recommended to use the other sources is that in the past, WMT really only gave you a tiny sample of your links. This has changed though. Also, John Mueller said a while back in a WMF question that for most sites, using just the links in WMT really should be enough.
-
So then for links to remove do you think it should only be links that are found in Google Webmaster Tools?
As I could have many links outside of GWT is it possible all 'spam links' they have ignored and I won't find in GWT or are they All there and should only consider removing links from here since this is what they see

Did you get a message in your WMT? Some people lately have been getting the different type of unnatural links warning that says,
"We don’t want to put any trust in links that are artificial or unnatural. We recommend removing any unnatural links to your site. However, we do realize that some links are outside of your control. As a result, for this specific incident we are taking very targeted action on the unnatural links instead of your site as a whole. If you are able to remove any of the links, please submit a reconsideration request, including the actions that you took."
If you got this warning, and if there is no yellow caution symbol next to it in WMT AND you have not seen a drop in rankings then yes, you are correct that you can just ignore those unnatural links as Google has granularly discounted them.
The regular unnatural links message is:
"We’ve detected that some of your site’s pages may be using techniques that are outside Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.
Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.
We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you’ve made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google’s search results.
If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request."
If you got that warning, OR if you got the first warning and you ARE seeing a ranking/traffic drop then, yes, you need to file for reconsideration. If you don't then your site will remain penalized and will have trouble ranking for some or all keywords.

Hi Nevil, first of all Google WAS ignoring the low value links pointing to your site. In the past having a link was always worthwhile. The least value they may pass was 0. Actually links may pass negative value to your site and the general consensus is if the ratio of those links pointing to your site is superior to a certain threshold (about 70% although portent says it would be 50% in the future) your entire site will be considered low value and "penalized".
Also there may be the case you were buying links. Google doesn't like people trying to game their algo so you want to get away from leaving patterns which may lead google to think you may have done this. If so you'll be probably negatively flagged.
About the reconsideration request it only have effect if your site received a manual penalty from google which normally confirm that with a message in your webmaster tools of unnatural links pointing to your website. In this case you want to send google a proof that you're really trying to change the way you build your links and tried to clean every sign of bad behaviour using all the tools you have, both contacting those sites to remove low value links and if not possible to disavow them.
This is to simplify a lot a widely more complicated scenario where many factors can act. Also you may be affected by Panda (as you said a number of low value pages are dragging your site down in rankings) in this case you want to get rid or improve those pages, but when this comes to links is a Penguin matter. People tries to get rid of bad links just becasue if Penguin hits you you'll need to wait until the next release (and they update very few times by now) until your site will see the light again.
Hope this helps clarify your doubts.

Effects of a bad link linking to a image
i am getting a lot of links from wallpapers sites.. One person has created 1000's of similar sites that are linking back to my images. My guess is images do not pass link value positive or negative. But I am not sure what the potential effects would be. Does anyone know who linking to images might effect SEO especially when there coming from horribly low quality auto generated sites.

Relaunching a site that has had thousands of posts linking to the same 20 articles. How to properly setup internal linking?
I'm in the process of relaunching a music news site (www.prefixmag.com) that once did quite well in search (over a million monthly search visits in its prime). The site got crushed by Panda, etc. and we stopped updating it. I'm starting to do more research but one thing that I noticed was we have modules in the right rail (desktop) that are found on all of our article pages that point to the same posts. (Edit: Added attachment. The links in the right rail under Editor Picks, Features, News, Media, etc. are found on every page of the site). In other words, we have thousands of posts that all link to the same 20 or so articles. Should we not do this if we're not trying to emphasize these posts in Google? Assuming this is the case, what is the proper way to do internal linking? Do we simply setup a sitemap and link to it? I'm hoping to have the thousands of articles we've published over the years have a chance to rank in search again. Also, we have a number of posts that are thin in content should those pages not be submitted in the sitemap? Thanks in advance! 2KmX0

GWT Lists URLs with links to my site, but those URLs don't have links to my site
There are a number of URLs that show up for my website in Webmaster Tools as having links to my site when in fact they don't. I know this to be a fact because I actually wrote some of the sites that Google is saying are linking to my site and I know there isn't any links on the specific pages to that site. For example, the site in question is: https://www.liftproducts.com/ As an example, Google is saying that about 100 URLs from https://www.lift-tables.net/ are linking to it when, I'm fairly confident that there is only 1 link to it found here: https://www.lift-tables.net/info.php?countrytabs=3 Yet Google says links exist on this (and many more) page: https://www.lift-tables.net/liftproducts/max-lift/lpt4w-030-48.php I thought at first it might have been due to linking to a image file directly instead of locally hosting it, but after checking the source, that's not the case. I am also seeing this type of non-linking being reported on sites I have no clue what they are. For example, some Spanish site about tandem bicycles is being listed as linking to liftproducts.com: http://206-225-85-34.dedicated.abac.net/tandem/inc Yet I can find no evidence of an actual link existing. Am I missing something here? Any insight of why this is happening and how I can clean up my link signature would be appreciated.

Need referrals on expert to clean up "unnatural links" and submit reconsideration request
I just received a manual unnatural links penalty. I was shocked because other than maybe five links many years ago, I've not done anything to get links. The site is very powerful in it's own right and buying links is unnecessary. My first thought was a competitor has done the link spamming on my behalf, any my site is very profitable and the competitors are plentiful and ruthless (i.e. steal my content and use it) since we are #1 for our search term. I took a quick look at my links (via webmaster tools) just now and yes, in the last few months there are tons of links from very bad looking sites that are I've never heard of. It's obvious I've been purposefully hit by a competitor. (What's it called when they do this?) Does Google understand at all that this stuff goes on? Do they even care? On the eventual reconsideration request, if I say that I honestly didn't do those links, would they even believe me or even care? I have read several articles on what to do now. But this is so important to my income stream that I don't want to screw anything up trying to fix it, and I want to get it right the first time. Every day is very expensive to me. So, I'd like to get some recommendations on any experts that can handle this professionally and swiftly. Please let me know of anyone trustworthy that won't rip me off, and if you are such a professional yourself, please let me know. Thank you

Using sitewide links to improve link profile?
Hi Guys... When I look at my competitor's link profile, they often have thousands of backlinks. For example, one of our main competitor, he got 3,400 backlinks in total but only 80 referring domains. When I look at my link profile, I have around 50-60 referring domains, but hardly 80 backlinks. My question is, is it okay to get a few sitewide links (no-follow of course!) to get to the thousands backlinks? Or I will be able to achieve top rankings with my current link profile? Thanks!!

Buy links
I know that many of you are against the whole thing with buying links. Your feelings put aside. Will it be better for my site to buy links or even do link exchange? Haven´t the crawlers been thought by now how to find these untrue links? I have read somewhere that the stop after 100 links, aren´t they smarter than that?

Links from Real Estate Websites Link Page, Do or Don't?
It seems that real estate sites have at times been under heavier scrutiny from the search engines. But real estate agents get networking, which makes acquiring those links a little bit easier. Plus with localization of search, I think real estate sites may give off a good GEO scent. Should SEO's go for links from real estate websites? Does a reciprocal link devalue said links?

Linking strategy between my own sites
Hi, I have one main site, let's call it food.com I also have 10 smaller sites, let's call them mexicanfood.com, indianfood.com, italianfood.com etc food.com is on its own separate dedicated server the 10 smaller sites are all on a shared IP in hostgator I don't want Google to think that I have created the 10 sites for only purpose of creating links to each other. So, would you recommend that all those 10 sites link to each other? or should there be no interlinking within those 10 same IP domains? What about linking from those 10 sites to my main site? How should I structure my own backlinks not to get penalized by Google ?
