Multi Language Redirect Issues
-
Hello everyone, this is my first post and as so let me first say, Thank you! The SEO Moz community and SeoMozPro have been giving a great help in making my workflow simpler and richer.
Lately I've been reading and learning a lot about indexation, in the process I have been making several improvements to some websites, but there is one particular that I am not able to understand. I am writing this post to ask for your help on an issue related to this website: www.dengun.com
We are a Web Agency based in Portugal and most our clients are from Portugal. We have an English version and a Portuguese version of the website. It is setup like this:
When the user hits www.dengun.com it redirects to /en or /pt acording to the browser language. The HTTP status code is 302, i was reading in SEOMoz that this is bad because it's not passing rank to the other pages. Will a 301 redirecting to /en and /pt according to the browsers language? What is the best solution? Thanks.

Hi Akram, thanks for the reply.
The website already has language buttons linking to the language page. We didn't make a landing page for the .com/ because we did not want to have one extra page that could be marked as duplicate content. Would you sugest having a landing page on the .com/ where user just selects language and does not display content?
-
Why are you using this technique, you could have done like make a landing page, ask for language selection or have a main site and show different language selections then link to that language page.
-
Hello Takeshi, thank you for your help. We want to give users the language that seems most apropriate for them, but we have buttons for users to change language.
My main question now is about how should i strucutre the urls?
-
The best solution from an SEO perspective would be to not redirect them, and have a landing page linking to both language versions of your site. Try to see if that would be possible without increasing your bounce rate. It may even be a better user experience, since it let's the user decide which language they want to use.

Is there any benefit to changing 303 redirects to 301?
A year ago I moved my marketplace website from http to https. I implemented some design changes at the same time, and saw a huge drop in traffic that we have not recovered from. I've been searching for reasons for the organic traffic decline and have noticed that the redirects from http to https URLs are 303 redirects. There's little information available about 303 redirects but most articles say they don't pass link juice. Is it worth changing them to 301 redirects now? Are there risks in making such a change a year later, and is it likely to have any benefits for rankings?

Redirecting Old Websites to New Websites
Hi Everyone, We are about to take down a number of websites in favour of a new singular B2B hub and would be looking to redirect all of these sites to the new home. For SEO purposes, what would be the best way to do this? Due to the difference in setups and scale of the site, it would be difficult to correctly match up each page to page between the sites for individual 301 redirects. Could someone advise on the best plan of action? Thanks.

A new website issue
Hello everybody,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mtmaster
I have started a new website 22 days ago at the beginning of this month and i have long articles. I think this should make the site appear in search results for long tail keywords even if they are not very relevant but as you can see in the attached image from my webmaster tools the impression count has suddenly increased to 100 then significantly decreased again. Even when i cancel "filter" option. Is this normal for a 3 weeks old website? or there is something i have to check? thanks. cLMa04l.jpg0 -
Merging Sites: Will redirecting the old homepage to an internal page on the new site cause issues?
I've ended up with two sites which have similar content (but not duplicate) and target similar keywords, rather than trying to maintain two sites I would like to merge the sites together. The old site is more of a traditional niche site and targets a particular set of keywords on its homepage, the new site is more of an authority site with a magazine type homepage and targets the same set of keywords from an internal page. My question is: Should I redirect the old site's homepage to the relevant internal page on the new website...

...or should I redirect the old site's homepage to the new site's homepage? (the old site's homepage backlinks are a mixture of partial match keyword anchor text, naked URLs and branded anchor text) I am in two minds (a & b!) (a) Redirecting to the internal page would be great for ranking as there are some decent backlinks and the content is similar (b) But usually when you do a 301 redirect the homepage usually directs to the new homepage and some of the old site's links are related to the domain rather than the keyword (e.g. http://www.site.com) and some people will be looking for the site's homepage. What do you think? Your help is much appreciated (and hope this makes sense...!)0 -
REL canonicals not fixing duplicate issue
I have a ton of querystrings in one of the apps on my site as well as pagination - both of which caused a lot of Duplicate errors on my site. I added rel canonicals as a php condition so every time a specific string (which only exists in these pages) occurs. The rel canonical notification shows up in my campaign now, but all of the duplicate errors are still there. Did I do it right and just need to ignore the duplicate errors? Is there further action to be taken? Thanks!

Redirect a temporary IP
I was performing some development work on a client's site recently under a temporary location on the host's server, for example: http://11.22.33.444/~accountname/folder/page.html Google managed to index a couple of pages using this url 😞 I have updated DNS to the correct domain and the site is live, but I am a bit confused in regards to the correct way to create a 301 Redirect for this example or at least a way point it to our 404 page. I am hoping someone more proficient with htaccess can help me out a bit... Thanks!

Duplicate content even with 301 redirects
I know this isn't a developer forum but I figure someone will know the answer to this. My site is http://www.stadriemblems.com and I have a 301 redirect in my .htaccess file to redirect all non-www to www and it works great. But SEOmoz seems to think this doesn't apply to my blog, which is located at http://www.stadriemblems.com/blog It doesn't seem to make sense that I'd need to place code in every .htaccess file of every sub-folder. If I do, what code can I use? The weirdest part about this is that the redirecting works just fine; it's just SEOmoz's crawler that doesn't seem to be with the program here. Does this happen to you?
