Link Building for extremely niche industry
-
I understand that when getting links into your site, they need to be good authority but, importantly, also relevant to the information on your own website.
I've seen examples for people to find guest posting opportunities on many sites, but these have been for popular industries with mass amounts of people discussing it (travel blogs, fashion blogs), making guest post opportunities more readily available.
The company I work for provide doc storage, scanning and paperless solutions. As you can guess, when following these guides to find blogs on our industry, I have come up short with places to ask to guest post on!
So, how would SEOmozzers approach building quality, relevant links for a very niche industry such as ours?
Also, we'll be building pages for extremely specific types of files (e.g. Microfiche Scanning, A0 Scanning....). For these pages, how will I be able to find relevant pages on these topics to get a link to, because these will obviously be even more niche than doc scanning?
Thank you!

Can you write case studies of how a business improved x and increased efficiency and reduced costs by having their company records scanned and available in a digital format? Perhaps subscribe to HARO (Help A Reporter Out) and look for reporters writing about topics where your service could be of assistance.

B to B is tough. But there is always a way. Is there a trade magazine or website you can identify ?
If so, the secret is cultivating relationships with the editors. You might start by following them on Twitter and perhaps answering questions. Or you could comment on blog posts.
The idea is that when you ask to do a guest post or send in a press release, it won't be your first interaction.
For one B to B client, we started with a target list of about 10 websites and publications. Initial results were disappointing: no response or rejection. But last week, we kinda hit the jackpot. A guest post was accepted and they asked for a whole series on other topics. And one of my client's experts will be doing some related webinars.
Another often neglected idea is speaking engagements by company executives. I actually look at the SEO value of trade shows and even local business roundtable sites and make suggestions with those in mind. Another client is a graduate student and fitness expert. i suggested he arrange a lecture at his own university that would be listed on the university website.
And what about profiles of company employees? It doesn't have to be the usually sucky profiles of Mr. Big. A sales or customer service rep who has been with the company for years often has great stories to tell about the changes he's seen. Write this up for your own blog, them send it to your new trade pub buddies. They will often do their own interview and story.
Hope this helps.

How we look at the site in steps:
A)Relevancy - the site must be as relevant as possible for users (similar terms on the site)
B)Back Links/Natural Linking - then we check to make sure the site has a natural linking profile and not over optimizing.
C)Authority/Page Rank
D)Social Media - does the site have a blog with real interaction, comments, likes and shares.
A and B must be done first and if they are not good proceed to the next link.
If A and B are good, steps C and D will help you evaluate the links actual value.

Keri,
Thanks for your input!
The problem is we don't sell scanners, we are a B2B company selling the service of scanning records for companies and turning them into a digital format. It is because of this which makes posting tricky, because we can't post about 'Top 10 Scanners' or 'Top Scanning Companies'.

Who uses your services? Libraries? Law firms? Newspapers? Do any businesses and individuals use it for keeping track of their own paperwork?
If newspapers used your services to scan their old issues, seems like you could make your site become the best resource ever on scanning. How to choose which scanner to use, how to hire someone to do it versus doing it inhouse, etc. Make it the place that everyone in that industry would go to for information.
I can empathize with niches. My husband runs a business that sells kits for model warships that shoot and sink each other. The number of people in the world who participate in this hobby is in the hundreds. We do have the "cool" factor going on, but really understand about the fun of being in a niche.

Thanks Bryan.
I have read that competitor link analysis is important, and have begun making a list of their back-link profile of competitors ranking highly for the most sought after keyword terms.
That being said, what would be the criteria for a link which is good enough to have coming into us?
(e.g. Minimum PR, Minimum Page Authority......)
I'm asking because high ranking competitors may have links which we could get a link from which on their own might not be very good to have coming into us.
Thanks

Maybe you just need to think a little outside of the box. For example, an article about scanning could be an useful resource for students, in a design blog, or even in a photography one, just think of all it's possible uses and stay creative!
Also googling the terms will get you a good place to start, check the SERP for 'Microfiche Scanning' for example, I'm staring at a few good linking opportunities right there.
Good luck!

Hi,
Spying on your top competitor, can help. Find out what they are doing that is working, and see how you could add value to the same users.
Find out what social networks they are in (if any) and where they are earning links from.
There are many ways to buld links, have you checked out: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-noob-guide-to-link-building
Hope this helps.

Backlinks vs External Links vs Referral Links vs Outbound links
Hello all, I was just wondering if you could explain the difference between all the links above? I'm confused as they all seem to be the same or similar and I would just like to clearly know what distinguishes them from eachother. Thanks for your help, Jayne

Niche Market without impartial authority for links
We've had trouble with one of our brand websites for years now in SERP rankings. When I first started working here 3 years ago I stated that the site lacks a content foundation to build on. A large number of our pages do not have proper text content or had duplicate content, there was no consideration of keyword usage in any title or body copy, and there was absolutely no reason for anyone to want to link to the site. I'm not a copy writer so I've pushed to get one hired, if even just on a freelance basis, to at least get some kind of content on the pages that I could work our keywords into. I'm hoping that soon they will finally start listening to me and we'll get that content in place. However, even with the content we have the problem of our market not having an impartial authority site that we could be linked from to help us build our own authority. The current authorities for our keywords are competitors. They've been doing a better job with their SEO and for a lot longer than us. The nature of our business restricts us from displaying pricing on our site which I feel is another major strike against us when it comes to organic link backs. We do not sell direct, all of our sells are made through authorized dealers and each dealer has their own territory that does not compete with each other. Additionally we do not have a MSRP and even if we did our dealers would explode if we advertised it on the site since there is such a wide range of dealer pricing. The only good thing we have going for our site currently is a new redesigned layout that makes it easier for users to navigate and get the information they need. I feel it is still to cluttered but I have to make the brand manager happy and that person insists on adding clutter that is not necessary. Additionally we added a new tool to the website, a custom tool that uses javascript and canvas to allow visitors to build their own product and request a price from their local dealer. The links we have to our site right now are from PR sites and sites that do not have any authority in regard to our target keywords. A while back we asked our dealers to help out by adding a link to our site from theirs. This was initiated by a third party company who had delusions of understanding SEO and so the links our dealers have work great for ranking us for our brand name but not so much in regard to the keywords we want to place for. Plus not every dealer is doing it. Our top competitors have over 3x the links to their sites than we do so we have a lot of catching up to do in that respect. And when I look at the sites that are linking to them it's, again, news and PR sites mostly. My line of thinking currently is to get our content issues under control and get all of our dealers linking to our site with properly constructed anchor text. I'm also trying to push to have more and more frequent press releases sent out to a wider range of sites than we currently target. I want to submit the customizer tool we developed (6 months of work and improvements/additions to be done in the future, so we're kinda proud of it) to sites that like to link to such things but so far I've not been able to find any. I'm just not searching for the right thing to find them is my guess. A few other ideas I've had is to reduce the page depth of many of our pages, mainly our product pages since they're 4 levels deep right now. I'm not sure if that's worthwhile though. How important is the url structure and keyword usage in them and how many levels should I try to keep from exceeding? We have an infographic on our site that generated a few links, are things like that really worth the time and effort though? Would it be better to focus our attention on something else instead? What I want to know is if my thinking is right and if there is anything else we should be doing that I haven't thought of yet. Or if I'm off base with all of this and we need to be focusing on something else entirely. Thanks in advance for any help/insight!

India and Link Building
A client of mine has decided to work all Link Building through an India team that she's used for a few years. The problem that I'm having with this situation is that the link building list below contains quite a few 0/10 PR websites, spam websites, and websites that have no direct relation to the client's industry. Am I wrong in thinking that link building should be done to high PR, authoritative sites that are related the the client's industry? The link below will take you to the Google Doc that contains all links built for this client. I would love it if someone could take a look at that list and tell me what they think. Is this recipe for disaster or great link building? https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B4a0JOKKFu0SUFZRbFRBNUZJekE Thank you so much!!!

Link Building - Goals and Expectations
I'm trying to set concrete goals around link building and I'm wondering if anyone has any insight on what is reasonable to expect. If we are reaching out to 10 sites a day in a non-spammy, relevant way, is it reasonable to think that we'll get 5 links back, 2 links? I just don't know. Tips and tricks are welcome too!!

Building Links to Exact Match Domains
What are the pros and cons having exact match domain and how can you create a brand name and build backlinks? Say we have a domain personalizedbirthdaygifts.com We are quite stuck with what anchor text we need to use and how do we vary it? I've heard that we have to stay away from using commercial keywords as anchor text heavily. We have to also use our brand name. And here we get stuck as we don't have a brand name. In this case Our brand name should be personalized birthday gifts but this is also commercial keyword. I have seen before similar websites droped from ranking because they have commercial keywords in their domain and most of their backlink anchor texts are commercial. If I had a website called twentyfive.com selling birthday gifts it would be a lot easier. But when you have a website personalizedbirthdaygifts.com and trying to rank for personalized birthday gifts and birthday gifts it's tough. OR isn't it? I hope I explained it well and didn't confuse anybody... Thanks

Link building software
Does anyone know of any software that will build links if I enter the URL in? I know this sounds silly but I had to ask... I know ontolo is good to discover which links you need based on a key word and I know the SEOmoz tools do the same. My question is that is there any software that you can then enter all the links you have found and acquire them, Thank you for your answers. I really appreciate it. Vijay
