Hi, I'm scouring the web for new links, and am taking a closer look at OSE; I'm trying to gauge whether the PA & DA rating(s) in the results page for a domain search takes into account any penalty signals the site may be showing, and whether there is a 'real' way to identify how much value links from the source will give you (if for example, there's already x10 other links away from that page or x100 links away from that domain). Basically - what else needs to be taken into account when using this app to identify link sources, etc. Thanks, David

Hey there. To answer your first 2 questions:
Do "the PA & DA rating(s) in the results page for a domain search takes into account any penalty signals the site may be showing"?
Kind of... Page Authority (and DA) are calculated using a number of factors, one of which is MozTrust. MozTrust can be used as a rough indicator of the trustworthiness of a site (as measured by the "distance" in links from trustworthy websites like universities and government websites). I wouldn't describe this as a "penalty signal" however.
"whether there is a 'real' way to identify how much value links from the source will give you (if for example, there's already x10 other links away from that page or x100 links away from that domain)"
I personally don't find much value in calculating this. I don't care too much if there's 20 links on a page or 500. If it's a high quality site that's relevent to my website, and there aren't links to spammy sites on the page, I still want that link. Furthermore, there is value from the link that goes beyond raw Pagerank. You're still increasing your total Linking Root Domains (a very important link building factor) and other misc metrics that Google may take into account separately from Pagerank passed by the link.
"Basically - what else needs to be taken into account when using this app to identify link sources, etc."
Assuming you're currently looking through your competitors' backlink profiles in OSE and trying to replicate those links, the only links I would skip are links that appear to be from spammy websites. This is a subjective measure based upon a number of visual indicators, and a handful of objective indicators (like whether that site is indexed in Google for example). Here's a decent post that goes over some of the red flags you should look for when deciding whether or not you want a link from a site: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-evaluate-guest-post-opportunities
The video links that Branagan left are also good resources to learn more about OSE's link metrics.

Hey,
There's a great Whiteboard Friday which I think covers those questions and more:
Which Link Metrics Should I Use? Part 1

How to select a quality site with SEOmoz root domain ranks for guest blogging?
Hi all! I'm going to submit a few guest posts to several web sites. When I'm selecting a blog, to submit a post, I use SEOMoz root domain statistics ( specially DA). I need to know what is the optimum rank level for select a good quality website to submit posts? Currently I use DA30 or higher sites. Is it a good? Apart from that, what are the other criteria that I should check? Specially after the penguin 4 update?

Does SEOmoz have a Keyword Research tool similar to, say, the Google AdWords tool or the WebCEO Keyword Research Tool? And where might that be? (Sorry, I'm very new to SEOmoz Pro.)
I'm looking for an SEOmoz version of the classic WebCEO Keyword Research that would give you effective suggestions based on a keyword inquiry. I've made the switch from WebCEO, but I'm trying to find something similar to that Keyword Research tool. Am I going to just need to use the Google AdWords tool for this function or does SEOmoz have it's own version?

If there a basic overview of the SEOMoz Pro tools?
I'm surprised there is no simple overview of all the features anywhere, or a guide on how to use the tools? There's a nice intro video, and a good beginners guide, then BAM! - straight into the Pro Tools (it's a bit daunting for someone learning!) Or at least that I can find... and help or pointers would be great 🙂

What would be a really good reason(s) to pay for PRO membership after 1 month free trial expires? What do I get here that I didn't already use during my trial, or can get somwhere else for free or less money? Not trying to criticize, just looking for facts. Thanks.

Why does SEOMoz Pro only do Rankings Once a Week?
Not sure I understand why the SEOMoz PRO report of rankings only occurs once a week? Any ideas? Seems like it would be easy to just pull that ranking report at any time.

Which Google API do you use to creat a rank checking tool?
I can't seem to work this one out. Basically I want to make a very simple rank checker tool something similar to http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/ranking-reports/ where a user simply type in a domain and a keyword and in return is shown the position within the results. The problem is I can’t work out which API's I need in order to build it, does anyone know what I need to poke about with? It must work with Google and ideally with Bing and the rest
