Moving from www.domain.net to domain.com?
-
We're thinking about moving our domain from www.domain.net to domain.com as we just acquired the dot com domain. www.domain.net receives roughly 20million pageviews per month and gets about 90% of it's traffic from search engines.
What is best to do in this situation?
- Should we start using .com instead of .net? 301 redirecting traffic to the .com from .net?
- Should we drop the www in front?
-
Woohoo! Thanks for the update! If you have any lessons learned or a case study you think the community could benefit from reading, feel free to submit over at YouMoz.

Just following up again for anyone who has stumbled on this.
We recovered to about 95% of where we were before the domain tld switch in late September. We've been climbing ever since too.
-
I wanted to update everyone on this.
We switched move to .com from .net. 301s were all in place. No other changes.
We've lost about 30% of search traffic. Within the last two weeks, traffic has leveled off -- it's been flat so I'm expecting that the worst is over. WMT is showing a boatload of our urls getting reindexed which makes me feel a bit better.
Here's to a rebound these next few weeks!

Wouldn't recommend it! Just simply 301 the .com to .net and you're done. What's the use of doing it all? I mean with that amount of traffic you shouldn't be worrying about such trivial things. And in my experience, difference between those two is simply with direct traffic. Which accounts for how much of the access numbers? Simply put, you would be wasting a lot of time and money for it. But that's just my opinion on the matter.
-
Can you kindly give me an example of "plan a link and social strategy"? Just not sure what you mean exactly.
-
20million pageviews, so even a larger impact -- which is why we're incredibly nervous!
I think we may just point the .com to the .net address for now. We're not branded as company-dot-net so we're often told, "hey i went to company.com and i didnt see your site!" which is a major annoyance.
Our other problem is our URLs. Today, they look like domain.net/category/node/ID-number ... we were thinking about moving to domain.net/content-page-title/ but not sure if its worth it since our URLs are so indexed in google.
Thanks again for your input with all of this

Michael, I don't know if switching from the .net to .com would be the best solution. With 2 million page views per month, you're possibly talking about a big amount of traffic gone. It sounds like you have a well established website.
here is why. authorize.net is already branded as a company. If they were to become authorize.com, I would literally type into the browser authorize.net.
If you make the switch, expect to lose a little rankings. You can always make it up later to get back to 2 million page views per month.
-
Make sure that when you are migrating the URL's across that you get all the current URL's and redirect them to the equivalent on the new domain. Don't just 301 everything to the homepage as I've seen people do before!
In terms of the www. and non www, I always say to use www. because it looks better and more professional in my opinion, just 301 redirect the non. www to the www version.
-
301 redirection from old to anew domain will lose some of its juice so this will affect your rankings in search engine which will have a direct impact on your traffic. 301 redirection is the right choice but tray to plan a link and social strategy that you can implement right after the redirections and this will control the juice loss.
Dropping www is your choice, but keep that in mind that do not run two versions of the URL so decide first which version of the website you will be using and then redirect 301 all the other versions of URL to the preferred one.
-
- about 8k uniques per month
-
-
I don't think it's temporary or permanent. Although I think it's easier to remember the .com over .net version. I wonder how many people go to the .com instead/
-
Irrelevant to SEO. Just make sure one points to the other. Don't have both at the same time.
-
-
Thanks for your response.
-
would you say long term we're better off using .com? so do we sacrifice a potential 10% drop today for a 20% increase tomorrow?
-
is it relevant for SEO though if we switch?
-
-
-
If you do a redirect expect a drop in traffic. Rand says that there might be a 10% drop in some video I watched long ago.
-
www vs non-www is irrelevant to me. I do both (not on the same domain). www looks nicer because we are used to seeing it like that.

Disavow wn.com?
I am cleaning up some spammy backlinks for a client and will be submitting a disavow at Google. This particular company website has 2,000+ backlinks from the domain wn.com which appears to be "World News". If you go to it, it appears to be nothing more than scraped content from other sites. Here is a recent example, where my client is linked to (I don't even see the backlink on the page, but it is in the source code!):

http://article.wn.com/view/2013/11/22/Hungarian_Woman_Sentenced_to_One_Year_in_Prison_for_Her_Role/#/related_news But when I look at Moz metrics, WN.com has a domain authority of 90! So I don't want to disavow something that could POTENTIALLY be helping us. The client's website gets zero traffic from wn.com and I've never seen my client linked to in anything worthwhile... it kinda looks spammy to me. If you were me, after looking at WN.com and taking everything into account... would you disavow it? This client really needs to create a healthier backlink profile. Thanks!0 -
Can I Point Multiple Exact Match Domains to a Primary Domain? (Avoiding Duplicate Content)
For example, lets say I have these 3 domains: product1.com product2.com product.com The first 2 domains will have very similar text content, with different products. The product.com domain will be similar content, with all of the products in one place. Transactions would be handled through the Primary domain (product.com) The purpose of this would be to capitalize on the Exact match domain opportunities. I found this seemingly old article: http://www.thesitewizard.com/domain/point-multiple-domains-one-website.shtml The article states that you can avoid duplicate content issues, and have all links attributed to the Primary domain. What do you guys think about this? Is it possible? Is there a better way of approaching this while still taking advantage of the EMD?

Schema.org tricking and duplicate content across domains
I've found the following abuse, and Im curious what could I do about it. Basically the scheme is: own some content only once (pictures, description, reviews etc) use different domain names (no problem if you use the same IP or IP-C address) have a different layout (this is basically the key) use schema.org tricking, meaning show (the very same) reviews on different scale, show a little bit less reviews on one site than on an another Quick example: http://bit.ly/18rKd2Q

#2: budapesthotelstart.com/budapest-hotels/hotel-erkel/szalloda-attekintes.hu.html (217.113.62.21), 328 reviews, 8.6 / 10
#6: szallasvadasz.hu/hotel-erkel/ (217.113.62.201), 323 reviews, 4.29 / 5
#7: xn--szlls-gyula-l7ac.hu/szallodak/erkel-hotel/ (217.113.62.201), no reviews shown It turns out that this tactic even without the 4th step can be quite beneficial to rank with several domains. Here is a little investigation I've done (not really extensive, took around 1 and a half hour, but quite shocking nonetheless):
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aqbt1cVFlhXbdENGenFsME5vSldldTl3WWh4cVVHQXc#gid=0 Kaspar Szymanski from Google Webspam team said that they have looked into it, and will do something, but honestly I don't know whether I could believe it or not. What do you suggest? should I leave it, and try to copy this tactic to rank with the very same content multiple times? should I deliberately cheat with markups? should I play nice and hope that these guys sooner or later will be dealt with? (honestly can't see this one working out) should I write a case study for this, so maybe if the tactics get bigger attention, then google will deal with it? Does anybody could push this towards Matt Cutts, or anybody else who is responsible for these things?0 -
Keyword Named Domains
First, I'm new to SEO so bear with me. My company owns a list of domains with names that are keywords for us. Right now, all those domains are redirecting to our main site. None of the domains has ever had content; they were purchased recently and simple redirected. My questions are: 1) is there any value in having domains that are exact keywords on which we'd like to rank, (i.e. does this work to improve site traffic and ultimately rankings, or is this a black hat tactic)? and, 2) would there ever be any value in turning these sites into landing pages with content and outbound links that lead to our original site? Thanks for your advice.

What to do about all of the other domains we own?
So I had asked this question a while back in a previous thread and thought I had the correct answer to it, but just actually heard differently on a webinar by Dr. Pete. Basically, we have a large number of domains that just replicate our website. Some are brand names, some are exact match keyword domains, some are clever plays on words. This is a tactic that our marketing department thought was a good idea. Obviously its not. My question is - Some of these domains actually have a significant amount of link value coming into them. How people found them I'm not sure, but nonetheless, I want to try to take advantage of the incoming links somehow if possible. Dr. Pete recommended against 301 redirecting back to our main domain all at once because that would be a signal to Google that something fishy is going on. This is what I was going to do, but now I'm really not sure what to do now... If possible, it would be great to get Dr. Pete in this thread to get his comments. I wasn't able to get an answer on the SEO in 2012 Pro Webinar.

Is domain name or page title "safe" as anchor text?
I am aware of the dangers of excessively optimized anchor text I have seen some suggestions that as long as your anchor text is either the URL or the page title that this will be OK, no matter how many links come in with that anchor text. Does anyone have an opinion, or even any hard data on this? Thx Paul
