Perhaps the SEOMoz beginner's guide should be updated?
-
I was on the phone tonight with a site owner who may have been affected by Penguin. I was explaining how overuse of keywords with anchor text can adversely affect a site and he asked me an interesting question: "If that is the case, then why does the SEOMoz guide say differently?"
Here are some quotes from the SEOMoz beginner's guide:
"Anchor Text - One of the strongest signals the engines use in rankings is anchor text. If dozens of links point to a page with the right keywords, that page has a very good probability of ranking well for the targeted phrase in that anchor text."
That pretty much implies that you should try to get as many keyword anchor texted links to your site as possible. There should probably be some type of Penguin warning in here.
"Self-Created, Non-Editorial - Hundreds of thousands of websites offer any visitor the opportunity to create links through guest book signings, forum signatures, blog comments, or user profiles. These links offer the lowest value, but can, in aggregate, still have an impact for some sites. "
Granted, the text goes on to say this:
"In general, search engines continue to devalue most of these types of links, and have been known to penalize sites that pursue these links aggressively. Today, these types of links are often considered spammy and should be pursued with caution."
That's a good warning, but I think it could be perhaps made a little more clear that self made links like this are not wise to use as an SEO tool. I think that to a beginner, it kind of sounds like the guide is saying, "There are lots of opportunities out there where you can get a link by making one yourself. Go ahead and use them but don't overdo it."

Definitely need that updated, it will also bring us more credibility when we tell our clients, no that is not the way anymore.
I also have a client who had previously developed this kind of linking strategy.
The poor guy probably spent hundreds of hours creating his links,on the old seo advice, and we have noticed a huge drop in their effectiveness. At the end of the day, his links were about keywords, not about content.
I think as an SEO, we have the responsibility to really make it clear to our clients that if they take a different approach, and create high quality community orientated content that contains some links, but is not all about the links they will not only benefit from the juice, but also benefit from google author rank.
I welcome the move towards quality content, as it means that genuine experts in various fields will now be heard.

This is true, I've ranked real well lately by saturating the market with my keywords as anchor text!

Hi Keri, I am in the process of reading this manual, and have been applying some of the suggested strategies.
I agree with EGOL that I don't think that it should be too much to ask for the manual to be updated as google or any other search engine releases new algorithms or changes.
It is a manual that is recommended to be read by SEOmoz and I hope that "quick changes" doesn't imply "i'll get to it when I can!"
-
Marie, EGOL, and others: I'll forward this thread to the appropriate people at Moz, and agree that it would be helpful to update it. It was updated about a year ago, but I'll see if there are any quick changes we can make.
-
I agree EGOL, my thoughts exactly!
-
I think that what Marie suggests are pretty easy edits.
They should be done ASAP to keep this important document - used by thousands - up to date.

I believe that SEOmoz beginners guide is one of the best places to start especially if you are interested in SEO as a career but if there is anything that is outdated (as you have mentioned) i guess this is less a problem from SEOmoz and more the problem from Google who continue to change its algorithm from time to time.
Obviously changing/updating the guide book regularly will not be ideal but I think if SEOmoz can add when it got updated last time so people can easily understand the reason of the outdated stuff available on within the guide.
Just my 2 cents!

Backlinks on sites that aren't relevant, how does google determine relevancy?
I have a competitor who I've talked about on here before about how they passed us in ranking for our main keywords and that they were a new site ( less than 6 months old ). Well after further digging a few things were found out: Our site seems to have a penguin penalty causing our keywords ( a group of synonyms as well ) from ranking better than rank 30. As well our competitor has been using this weird backlink tactic of using SEO sites ( a friend? ), a parent site to prop it up ( footer links and others ) as well has links inside articles that aren't relevant as in having a commercial niche page inside a lawyer site page talking about phone dialing. Then the low DA directory sites. I'm curious as to if penguin algo will catch them once it comes out, if not penguin a manual review would certainly catch their tactics, but this site is doing everything else other than proper SEO. What do you think?

I've watched a few backlinks disappear from our inbound link search.
After inquiring to Moz.org about this, they suggested this might be due to a new feature that was rolled out, however, this 2 year old backlink still hasn't shown up and I'm a little concerned. Has anyone else experienced this?

Best Ways To Get Influencers To View A Guide Document
Hi There, We have recently put together a really good guide for our client as our buying persona research proved it needed one. I am stuck though in two minds at the best way to promote it for maximum visiblity and possiblly influencer linkage. Would you recommend using the pdf as lead gen where people need to enter their email address and name to download it or should I be on it's own page as a possible power page. If I do it as a lead gen how do I outreach to it. Could I send influencers a link to view it privately for review or what method have people found useful. Just after general guidance really. Cheers as always.

Has the Humminbird update caused links to be worth less or more?
As things move on will links be worth less as recent updates including the hummingbird update are moving further and further in the direction of content and social signals being the important. On the other hand good links are becoming so hard to find, that may make them become more important than ever. I'm trying to split my time up between content creation and link building/PR. which area should be focused on most. we have more quality content than we do quality links. our link profile is good but far to small. any suggestions what to focus on?

Is anybody else noticing a dramatic change to their 'links to your site' section in Google Webmaster Tools?
Hey,
Link Building | | ChrisHolgate
Over the last six months or so we've been going through our backlink profile and cleaning up links from poor quality sources. Week by week there have been small changes in our Google Webmaster Tools 'links to your site' section to reflect this. I logged on this morning however and there has been a dramatic shift in the information displayed. Pretty much every bad link has been removed from the list including sites I know for a fact are still linking to us as they didn't communicate at all to our removal requests. Additionally, rather than showing the top 1000 links to our site as it used to, WMT is only showing 73 linking domains. The remaining 73 domains are good natural links from high quality sources. I'm guessing Google are just in the middle of an update and that the remaining linking domains (including the bad ones) will reappear shortly. This isn’t a request for advice or help but I’m just curious as to whether anybody else is seeing anything similar?0 -

Outbound links and their pro's and con's
So I was wondering if there was a general consensis regarding the amount of outbound links you have coming from your domain to other domains and if there is a correlation between the more you have going out, the more (for want of a better word) damage you can do to your domain. EG: is a site with good domain authority better to keep the short leash on handing out links to external sites? Does this make the link juice from the site more valuable?
