Using Robots Meta Tag on Review Form Pages
-
I have gone over this so many times and I just can't seem to get it straight and hope someone can help me out with a couple of questions:
Right now, on my dynamically created pages created by filters (located on the category pages) I am using rel""canonical" to point them to their respective category page.
- Should I also use the robots meta tag as well?
Similarly, each product I have on my site has a review form on it and thus is getting indexed by Google. I have placed the same canonical tag on them as well pointing them to the page with the review form on it.
- In the past I used robots.txt to block google from the review pages but this didn't really do much. Should I be using the robots meta tag on these pages as well?
If I used the robots meta tag should I noindex, nofollow?
Thanks in advance,
Jake

Hi Ollan,
Thanks, I guess I had a round about way of asking my question and you confirmed what I thought. I am using the canonical tag on these pages:
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=1
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=21
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=31
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=41Thanks again,
Jake

Hi Jake,
After looking at your page, I have the feeling that what you want to do is eliminate any possibility of duplicate content, am I correct? It seems like every product on your site has it's own unique URL anyway. You would want each of these pages crawled and indexed, so I wouldn't use noindex, nofollow on these pages. Only use noindex, nofollow on pages that you DON'T want to see in the search engine results.
Use the rel="canonical" on the pages that could be reached through multiple URLs.
On your page: http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=71,
I would use the rel="canonical", because these URLshttp://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=1
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=21
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=31
http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=41...etc., all take you to the exact same page.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Ollan. So I would want these filter pages (like this: http://www.1800doorbell.com/wireless-plug-in-door-chimes.htm?option=71) both noindex and nofollow right?

Even if you use a directive in robots.txt, your pages can still get crawled and indexed if the crawler gets there via an external link to your page. Simple solution is to use:
on all pages you want excluded from the SERPs.

Using Canonical Tags on Every Page
I'm doing competitive research and noticed that one of our competitors (who outranks us) uses canonical tags on every page on their site. The canonical tags reference the page they are on. For example. www.competitor.com/product has a canonical tag of www.competitor.com/product. Does anyone use this practice? It seems strange to me. Thank you, Kristen

Difference in using dividers in TITLE TAG
Hi everyone, i know that dividers in title or even title tag doesnt have much of an impact on better rankings. I had great rankings for many keywords, not using dividers or using only one divider. However for better reading comprehension and usability, and also aesthetics i started to use the pipe as my main divider and other secondary dividers. I saw many pages drop in rankings vs other less competent and with less content pages. My format was as follows: Product Brand | Product description - Additional info or local info ie. Fiber Glass MBI | Insulation Batts for Home and Commercial use - Acoustic and Thermal Insulation I changed the format for a handful of pages, and saw immediate results on rankings and traffic on those pages. Product Brand with Product Description - Additional Info ie. Fiber Glass MBI Insulation Batts for Commercial use - Acoustic and Thermal Insulation. Does it sound like something i should implement page wide. I personally like the aesthetics of the pipe as it gives a cleaner look, but the better rankings on the changed pages with using only one divider makes me think. Does it sound familiar, or its just a coincidence, Regards,

Meta Title in Google does not match the HTML meta title I have coded in a site
I have a client site that is pulling a meta title that is not in his code. I am using Yoast for the titles and descriptions on this site. Not 100% sure why Google is not listing the title we have in place. Could the code be pulling from somewhere else? Is there a fix for this?

Page Not Indexed
Hi Guys I wrote and published an article last night on my site but it is yet to be indexed. This is strange as articles are usually indexed pretty quickly. Could you have a quick look and see what the problem is? http://www.rankmytri.com/tomtom-running-and-triathlon-watch/ Also all my Blog posts (in the blog section of the site) are not indexed as well (and I dont think they have been for a while) yet I dont have any messages from Google in my webmaster tools. Thoughts? Thanks in advance Ross

Meta separators
I've been told that pipes are the best separators for title tags. Can anyone tell me the best ones for H1 and H2 tags? Do I go with pipes, commas, hyphens, underscores...?

Alt image tags not being read by on-page optimization tool
Can bots see the keyword among other words in aIt image tags? For example, if the keyword is upholstery leather and the image tag says "our upholstery leather collection" will the keyword be recognized? Another example is buy leather. I have a image tag on a slide that reads "free samples before you buy leather" but an on-page analysis in moz does not show an alt tag title for buy leather? Same problem with an moz on-page analysis of the term upholstery leather. Thanks! Hunter

Duplicate pages
Hi, I am using a CMS that generates dynamic urls that according to the SeoMoz tool will be indexed as duplicate pages. The pages in questions are forms, blog-posts etc. that are not crucial to achieve ranking for. I do worry though about the consequences of having 20 (non-duplicate)pages with static urls and about 100 pages that are duplicates with dynamic urls. What consequences will this have for the speed that the robots crawl the site and could there be negative effects on ranking for the entire domain?
