Magento Duplicate Content Recovery
-
Hi, we switched platforms to Magento last year. Since then our SERPS rankings have declined considerably (no sudden drop on any Panda/Penguin date lines). After investigating, it appeared we neglected to No index, follow all our filter pages and our total indexed pages rose sevenfold in a matter of weeks.
We have since fixed the no index issue and the pages indexed are now below what we had pre switch to Magento. We've seen some positive results in the last week. Any ideas when/if our rankings will return?
Thanks!

Hi There
This is really hard to answer. Let's assume nothing else changed (which is of course, completely impossible) but for the sake of the question. All of the wrong pages that were not indexed prior would need to be de-indexed in Google - I would check to see if they are still indexed, because it can take some time for them to be de-indexed. If/when that happens, in our hypothetical vacuum like situation, the rankings would return when those pages are completely de-indexed.
However, in reality, this is not how it works of course - so by all means, fix the technical issues, as they are important of course - but don't forget to keep a wide view of the situation and realize that other factors may be affecting the rankings now as well - and to not hyper-focus/obsess too much about this one thing.

Hi Jon,
Are you sure the indexing issue was the cause of your drop in rankings? Switching platforms can introduce a raft of potential issues. You have probably covered these but worth keeping in mind things like any content changes that happened at the same time, proper rel canonical tags on the product pages, 301 redirects to account for url changes etc. I would pay particular attention to main keywords and their associated landing pages pre and post platform change to note any major differences which might give you more specific areas to look at.
In regards how long it might take, if you have a big site with lots of products then it could take google a number of weeks to reindex (or deindex) all the pages, so I would suggest being patient before making too many changes on top of each other. You can check the cache date of your main pages in the google serps by clicking on the 'cached' link next to the url which will give you a page with the date of the latest copy google has.
Hope that helps!

I personally feel Magento is prehistoric and not much fun. However if it is a issue where you have simply had mixed up settings with index and archive I believe it will be back before you know it. I have fouled up the settings once or twice myself. this is a link to a very good resource for Magento in my opinion I would be running WordPress woo commerce but I don't know how big your stores nor do I know you're interested in running

I hope I have been of help,

Complicated Duplicate Content Question...but it's fun, so please help.
Quick background: I have a page that is absolutely terrible, but it has links and it's a category page so it ranks. I have a landing page which is significantly - a bizillion times - better, but it is omitted in the search results for the most important query we need. I'm considering switching the content of the two pages, but I have no idea what they will do. I'm not sure if it will cause duplicate content issues or what will happen. Here are the two urls: Terrible page that ranks (not well but it's what comes up eventually) https://kemprugegreen.com/personal-injury/ Far better page that keeps getting omitted: https://kemprugegreen.com/location/tampa/tampa-personal-injury-attorney/ Any suggestions (other than just wait on google to stop omitting the page, because that's just not going to happen) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ruben

How to Set Up Canonical Tags to Eliminate Duplicate Content Error
Google Webmaster Tools under HTML improvements is showing duplicate meta descriptions for 2 similar pages. The 2 pages are for building address. The URL has several pages because there are multiple property listings for this building. The URLs in question are: www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3 www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan How do I correct this error using canonical tags? Do I enter the URL of the 1st page under “Canonical URL” under “Advanced” to show Google that these pages are one and the same? If so, do I enter the entire URL into this field (www.metro-manhattan.com /601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan) or an abbreviated version (/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan)? Please see attached images. Thanks!! Alan rUspIzk 34aSQ7k

Is a "Critical Acclaim" considered duplicate content on an eCommerce site?
I have noticed a lot of wine sites use "Critical Acclaims" on their product pages. These short descriptions made by industry experts are found on thousands of other sites. One example can be found on a Wine.com product page. Wine.com also provides USG through customer reviews on the page for original content. Are the "Critical Acclaim" descriptions considered duplicate content? Is there a way to use this content and it not be considered duplicate (i.e. link to the source)?

Do you bother cleaning duplicate content from Googles Index?
Hi, I'm in the process of instructing developers to stop producing duplicate content, however a lot of duplicate content is already in Google's Index and I'm wondering if I should bother getting it removed... I'd appreciate it if you could let me know what you'd do... For example one 'type' of page is being crawled thousands of times, but it only has 7 instances in the index which don't rank for anything. For this example I'm thinking of just stopping Google from accessing that page 'type'. Do you think this is right? Do you normally meta NoIndex, follow the page, wait for the pages to be removed from Google's Index, and then stop the duplicate content from being crawled? Or do you just stop the pages from being crawled and let Google sort out its own Index in its own time? Thanks FashionLux

I have the website http://www.hotelelgreco.gr and every image in image library http://www.hotelelgreco.gr/image-library.aspx has a different url but is considered duplicate with others of the library. Please suggest me what should i do.

I'm not sure why SEOMoz is reporting duplicate content
I have thousands of duplicate page content errors on my site, but I'm not exactly sure why. For example, the crawl is reporting this page - http://www.fantasytoyland.com/2011-glee-costumes.html is a duplicate of this page - http://www.fantasytoyland.com/2011-jersey-shore-costumes.html . All of these products are unique to the page - what is causing it to flag as duplicate content?
