PA59 DA51 Yet the site hardly ranks
-
Hello All,
I wonder if you'd kind enough to help with your insights...
The site is www.dataclinic.co.uk
It's been up and running since 2002 and is a data recovery related site that for years ranked on page 1 for lots of data recovery search terms.
Now it's hardly ranking at all, despite decent content and updated blogs. Google (via Webmaster tools) says the site hasn't been penalized for bad links... but we are searching for an explanation as to why it's so difficult to get our once good rankings back.... (For example, the main search term we'd like to rank for is "data recovery"... we are currently on page 8... [google.co.uk search]... why???)
Any ideas greatly appreciated... and I'll reply to each of you privately if you wish.
Thanks for your time.
Chris

Thanks Rikki - your time and advice are much appreciated.

Hi Chris,
Things link your robots.txt file, on page optimisation etc aren't screaming out any major issues like you are reporting so I don't think you are going to find a specific, easy to see, reason for your drop and have an overnight answer unfortunately.
There was also a Panda update in March. Given your two drops were around dates with Panda updates that would signal a bit of a warning.
As Matt suggested I would do a full analysis of your link profile and look to lessen the keyword rich nature if that is the case.

Hi Matt, this clean link building is already underway... although this action should address the poor rankings it still doesn't remove the cause of the rankings loss obviously... Frustrating!!!
Best, Chris

I'm not sure if this is the issue but having looked at the link profile of that specific page it looks a little unnatural. There are lots of links pointing to that specific page on your site with anchor text. Granted, the anchor text is mainly long tail but still very keyword rich (hard disk failure).
It could have something to do with the issue. I'd recommend maybe building a few nice clean links to the page using branded anchor text or naked anchor text (www.mydomain.com). Even if anchor text isn't the issue, it should only help your website if the links look natural
I'll try and delve a little deeper later on, I have to jump into a meeting now I'm afraid.

I'm looking at it now.... Thanks!

Hey Matt,
Thanks for replying. I used that tool you recommended and there's a marked drop off from March 2012. Infact the traffic in June 12 is a quarter of what it was before the March 12 drop off. So obviously, this is very significant.
Typical keywords: "hard disk failure", "data recovery", "hard drive data recovery"
We used to rank on page 1 for them all...
Best,
Chris

Yeah its pretty cool. Its basic but serves its purpose nicely. Saves having to remember the dates of each algo update (or checking them manually).
-
Never seen that tool before Matt, do you rate is highly?

Hi Chris,
There were in fact a couple of Panda updates in November 2012, it may be worth looking into these to see if either could have effected you. More details at: http://www.seomoz.org/google-algorithm-change#2012

Sorry to hear of the problems, Chris.
Can you give us an idea of the keywords that have dropped off and their relevant landing pages?
Also, it might be worth checking whether the drops in visitors coincided with any algo update. To check, try this great tool:

Hi Rikki,
Thanks for your reply - the site completely bombed ranking wise mid Nov 2012. We are not aware of any changes at this time.
In Jan 2013 a new site was created to replace the old (and hopefully fix whatever was wrong) and used 301 redirects to map old pages to new.
As of today thou, we are still ranking very poorly..
Thanks
Chris

Hello Chris,
Before I have a quick look when did you website stop ranking? Was it sudden or have you lost your rankings slowly over time?

Keyword keeps fluctuating between a high rank and no rank?
I've searched around and I can't seem to find anyone else describing the issue I'm seeing. Basically for a very long time our website (snappages.com) has always ranked in the tens and twenties for "create a website". It's a high volume keyword and we get a lot of traffic from it. Around May 16th it suddenly disappeared completely from search results on Google and now it will sporadically show back up with a SERP in the twenties every 5-10 days for a few hours and then completely disappear again. This pattern has continued to this day. I've checked and there are no manual penalties and nothing has really changed dramatically from a content perspective or anything like that. I would understand if we got penalized and our ranking dropped, or even if it just completely disappeared? This is the only keyword that this is happening for, all the others remain unaffected. Anyone know how I can find out why this is happening or have suggestions on how to fix it?

One page ranking for all key words, when other targeted pages not ranking
Hi everyone I am fairly new to SEO but have a basic understanding. I have a page that has a lot of content on it (including brand names and product types and relevant info) ranking for a quite a few key words. This is cool, except that I have pages dedicated to each specific key word that are not ranking. The more specific page still has a lot of relevant text on it too. eg. TYRES page - Ranks first for "Tyres". Ranks okay for many tyre key words, including "truck tyres"
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JDadd
TRUCK TYRES page - not ranking for "truck tyres" Further on, I then have pages not ranking all that well for more specific key words when they should. eg HONDA TRUCK TYRES - Then has a page full of product listings - no actual text. Not Ranking for "honda truck tyres". ABC HONDA TRUCK TYRE - not ranking for "abc honda truck tyre" key word
These pages don't have a lot of content on them, as essentially every single tyre is the same except for the name. But they do have text. So sometimes, these terms don't rank at all. And sometimes, the first TYRES page ranks for it. I have done the basic on page seo for all these pages (hopefully properly) including meta desc, meta titles, H1, H2, using key words in text, alt texting images where possible etc. According to MOZ they are optimised in the 90%. Link building is difficult as they are product listings, so other sites don't really link to these pages. Has anyone got ideas on why the top TYRES page might be so successful and out ranking more specific pages? Any ideas on how I can get the other pages ranking higher as they are more relevant to the search term? We are looking in to a website redesign/overhaul so any advice on how I can prevent this from happening on essentially a new site would be great too. Thanks!0 -
Why does old "Free" site ranks better than new "Optimized" site?
My client has a "free" site he set-up years ago - www.montclairbariatricsurgery.com (We'll call this the old site) that consistently outranks his current "optimized" (new) website - http://www.njbariatricsurgery.com/ The client doesn't want to get rid of his old site, which is now a competitor, because it ranks so much better. But he's invested so much in the new site with no results. A bit of background: We recently discovered the content on the new site was a direct copy of content on the old site. We had all copy on new site rewritten. This was back in April. The domain of the new site was changed on July 8th from www.Bariatrx.com to what you see now - www.njbariatricsurgery.com. Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

Why is this site not indexed by Google?
Hi all and thanks for your help in advance. I've been asked to take a look at a site, http://www.yourdairygold.ie as it currently does not appear for its brand name, Your Dairygold on Google Ireland even though it's been live for a few months now. I've checked all the usual issues such as robots.txt (doesn't have one) and the robots meta tag (doesn't have them). The even stranger thing is that the site does rank on Yahoo! and Bing. Google Webmaster Tools shows that Googlebot is crawling around 150 pages a day but the total number of pages indexed is zero. It does appear if you carry out a site: search on Google however. The site is very poorly optimised in terms of title tags, unnecessary redirects etc which I'm working on now but I wondered if you guys had any further insights. Thanks again for your help.

Will an inbound follow link on a site be devalued by an inbound affiliate link on the same site?
Hey guys, quick question I didn't find an answer to online. Scenario: 1. Site A links to Site B. It's a natural, regular, follow-link 2. Site A joins Site B's affiliate program, and adds an affiliate link Question: Does the first, regular follow link get devalued by the second affiliate link? Cheers!

Rank keeps decreasing - Is my site penalized
Hello, I have run into a bit of a predicament. All of my search terms keep dropping on a monthly basis, even though I am adding quality guest posts every month. Even if I get a handful of articles on semi-popular sites my ranking still drop. I am wondering, is my site penalized? My metrics also over exceed my rankings using both the Moz metrics and pagerank. I have a PR of 5 and domain rank of 50+ and I am still getting outranked on every term by people with lower metrics (PR 2 and DR of 30) In the past I have done mostly article syndication through sites like ezinearticles and isnare, but that was about 5 years ago. I have also done a couple of the "pay $50 for 100 directory submissions" once but that was also about 5 years ago. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Anyone have any advice? As you can probably tell I am getting really frustrated. P.S. - This is happening for all pages on my website, not just particular pages. Is is possible to get a site wide penalty, and if so, what can be done about it?
