How to fix doorway site
-
Hello,
This client has a one page doorway site that is a copy of a category of his main site. It looks like the main site and has over 100 links to the site. We're cleaning things up to be white hat and we're wondering how to capture this traffic and link juice (this doorway has no backlinks though, it is an EMD) without a ton of money and effort.
My thought so far is to put a uniquely designed paypal cart on there with top products and one link to the main site that says something like: To pay by credit card or to see more products, visit mainsite.com
Would that be squeeky clean white hat or is that still a doorway headed for an update? What's best to do here on a low budget?

I agree with Paul, 100%. Just do a 301 redirect and move on. As you said, it's dropping in the SERPS and there's really only type-in traffic and there's no SEO value of it's own. Minimal PA, DA. 301 Redirect and Issue Resolved.

PA 19 DA 11
It's dropping in the SERPs
Traffic isn't huge, but it's worth doing the right thing.
We'll definitely 301 redirect it. Thanks Paul!

Thanks
Is the site actually ranking now, based entirely on having exact match in its domain? Even if it is, this is exactly the kind of thing the recent EMD Algo was designed to supress, so I'd bet it won't hold it's ability to rank like that for much longer. Which is why I wouldn't really be willing to invest many resources in it as-is.
With the 301, the Domain URL will likely eventually fall out of the index, but you'll still continue to get whatever type-through traffic you've been getting.
The problem you face is that any single-page site that has thin content and only links through to one related site is going to be a flashing neon sign just begging to get hammered. The only way around that would be to invest enough resources to make it a truly valuable user experience on its own - certainly do-able but more work and expense than you indicated you were willing to do.
Look at it this way... you want an easy way for for a cheap, no-effort site who's only virtue is that it's an EMD to send valuable traffic and ranking to another site. Doesn't that sound like the very definition of what Google has stated it wants to get out of its SERPs?
This is old SEO thinking - trick Google for a quick win, as opposed to delivering real value. I've had more than enough evidence in the last 18 months that this isn't where I'd invest my time. YMMV.
You could certainly try to keep the page up and take whatever value it can provide until it gets devalued or penalized. At that point you'd just throw out the domain altogether, but "get it while it lasts". You'll have to make that call based on whether it's delivering enough value/traffic to be worth the (relatively minor) risk it could get your main site in trouble for questionable linking practices.
Personally, I'd let it go with a redirect and invest my resources in other higher-value activities.
Paul
Out of curiosity - what kind of PA/DA does the site have?
-
Thanks Paul, I always like your advice. This may be a stupid question but how will we still rank for the term if we do a 301 redirect? All the traffic is because its an EMD
-
My guess is that if the domain has no backlinks, it probably has no link juice to even pass to the main site.
What kind of traffic is the doorway site getting? Is it mostly direct from type-ins due to being an EMD?
Without seeing the site, my recommendation would be to take down the doorway site altogether and 301-redirect the domain to the appropriate related category on the main site. That would still pass along the traffic, and also some of whatever minor link juice the page had managed to acquire.
Would that make sense?
Paul

Whitehat site suffering from drastic & negative Keyword/Phrase Shifts out of the blue!
I am the developer for a fairly active website in the education sector that offers around 30 courses and has quite an actively published blog a few times a week and social profiles. The blog doesn't have comments enabled and the type of visitor that visits is usually looking for lessons or a course. Over the past year we have had an active input in terms of development to keep the site up to date, fast and following modern best practises. IE SSL certificates, quality content, relevant and high powered backlinks ect... Around a month ago we got hit by quite a large drop in our ranked keywords / phrases which shocked us somewhat.. we attributed it to googles algorithm change dirtying the waters as it did settle up a couple of weeks later. However this week we have been smashed again by another large change dropping almost 100 keywords some very large positions. My question is quite simple(I wish)... What gives? I don't expect to see drops this large from not doing anything negative and I'm unsure it's an algorithm change as my other clients on Moz don't seem to have suffered either so it's either isolated to this target area or it's an issue with something occurring to or on the site? Multiple sites in the same niche (Should we redirect these to our Main Site)
I will keep this short and sweet. We have some websites in the same niche area but want to focus only on our newest site (basically all the information that was being posted on the other sites will now be part of our new site) This will save us a lot of time and increase our focus on 1 entity. Should we redirect these website with a 301 redirect to the specific categories that they focus on in the new site? or should we redirect to the main domain.

Competitors Linking to My Site
One of the more successful competitors in my niche has embarked on new strategy that seems to be working well for him. I noticed that many new links began to appear to my site from my competitor's stable of many websites. It appears that he has setup a link wheel to benefit a site that has been in the top Google position for several months now. The rim of the wheel links back to authority sites, including my own main site (established 7 years, now hanging on to the lowly 10th place on the serp). So the strategy seems to be: a) create a dozen sites that no-follow link back to authority sites including competitors, b) place links in a such a manner (bottom of page, uncolored links, from images) that a customer is unlikely to ever click on it, c.) do-follow to your own site and blast it to the top of Google. I don't think this competitor is worried about getting penalized. I've been watching this for years. When one site gets burned, he just shifts things around and brings up another one of his sites. He seems to age them for years, calling them up one by one as they are needed. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it a trend? Because it sure seems to work. He's crowded the front page now with 4 of his sites. Would it be appropriate for me to "disavow" his links? Would it matter?

How can I tell if my site was penalized from the most recent penguin update?
Hey all, I want to be able to see if my website was penalized from the most recent penguin update because we have several hundred websites built and at the bottom of each on it says something along the lines Website by, Web Design by, Hosting by and links back to our homepage. Could this possibly be penalizing us since these links have similar anchor text and on sites that have nothing to do with our services? Thanks, Ryan

Beating the file sharing sites in SERPs - Can it be done and how?
Hi all, A new client of mine is an online music retailer (CD, vinyls, DVD etc) who is struggling against file sharing sites that are taking precedence over the client's results for searches like "tropic of cancer end of things cd" If a site a legal retailer trying to make an honest living who's then having to go up against the death knell of the music industry - torrents etc. If you think about it, with all the penalties Google is fond of dealing out, we shouldn't even be getting a whiff of file sharing sites in SERPs, right? How is it that file sharing sites are still dominating? Is it simply because of the enormous amounts of traffic they receive? Does traffic determine ranking? How can you go up against torrents and download sites in this case. You can work on the onsite stuff, get bloggers to mention the client's pages for particular album reviews, artist profiles etc, but what else could you suggest I do? Thanks,

Need clarification on what is a landing page vs. doorway page
Hello everyone - I just became a PRO member today and wanted to say hello and ask this question... I am launching a new product, but 6 months before I created 4 different domains with landing pages to "prime" my SEO for the keywords I am trying to pursue. Now that I have launched my new product, it resides on the main domain name (let's call it "MainDomain.com"). Here's my dilemma... I want to create landing pages on each of the different domains for my PPC and optimized organic search traffic. For example, on one of the other domains (let's call it "LandingDomain1.com"), I have created a page to optimize for the keyword "event planning software" and sending my PPC traffic for "event planning software" there as well as my email campaigns. This page has original content that I have written for it (it's not duplicate content used elsewhere), but it also has navigation and links pointing to MainDomain.com, which is where we convert and collect registrations. My question is, will this activity be considered a doorway page even though I'm using it for a landing page for a particular audience? And, if it could be considered a doorway page, would I be better off moving all these optimized landing pages to my MainDomain.com and then doing a 301 redirect from those other domains to the MainDomain.com. Your input is much appreciated ... thanks.

Would linking out to a gambling/casino site, harm my site and the other sites it links out to?
I have been emailed asking if I sell links on one of my sites. The person wants to link out to slotsofvegas[dot]com or similar. Should I be concerned about linking out to this and does it reduce the link value to any of the other sites that the site links out to? Thanks, Mark
