301 redirect on Windows IIS. HELP! (Part 2)
-
My webmaster's trying (but struggling) to 301-redirect the non.www version of my site to the www version. He's following these instructions given to me in a response to an SEOMoz Private Question (ah, the good old days!).
So far he's 301-redirected the homepage but seems stuck on how to do the entire site. Any clues on what he should be doing?
-
He seems to have sorted it out now -- touch wood.
Thank you for your replies. -
Yeah and that's how you do it in IIS... Trust me I did this recently.
You create a site, say - domain.com (if you already have www.domain.com)
go into properties of domain.com and set the "A redirection to a URL" tab to www.domain.com, check permanent, and then it will send all requests to domain.com over to www.domain.com
Seriously that's the easiest way to do it I did these exact steps about 2 months ago and our site redirects perfectly, all pages. (setting the canonical version is setting a redirect in this scenario)
-
He's not trying to redirect a file or directory, Jesse, he's trying to create the rewrite rule that will set the canonical version (all www or all non-www) for all pages on the site.

Those instructions are correct and should work for the whole site, Jeepster. Are you certain he's implementing them correctly? In particular you need to be absolutely certain that he's selected the Canonical Domain rule template, not a blank rule that he's writing himself.
Also, have you confirmed that the resulting code appears in the site's web.config file as indicated in the tutorial?
If all that's been confirmed, I'd check with your hosting provider to see why there might be issues getting these configs applied to your site. (assuming it's not an unmanaged dedicated or VPS sever.)

I'm not sure about all those fancy instructions in that link there... This is how I would do it, in a nutshell (correct me if I've missed a step as I do not have access to our IIS server at this time to retrace the steps, this is from memory)
-
Open IIS in Explorer and navigate to your site. Right click on the file or folder you wish to redirect and select Properties. (this will allow you to do it per directory, per page, etc)
-
In the file tab, select "A redirection to a URL" - (i may have missed a step here. i also know that depending on which IIS version you are running the location of this changes. I believe this is for IIS 7. Either way there will be an option somewhere in the called "A redirection to a URL")
-
Enter the url to redirect to
-
Determine whether you want to do the optional checkboxes (probably will want to check "A permanent redirection for this resource")
-
Click OK
Hope this helps!

Any risks involved when we have huge list of redirects in our website database?
Hi all, We have changed hundreds and thousands of page and page URLs for last 10 years in our website. So, now we are going to redirect most of the old pages/links to the current related pages. This will increase the number of redirects we set in our website database to thousands. Will this put any extra weight on crawler and any risks involved for employing too many redirects. Thanks

Affiliate and Earning Disclosure help please
Hello Moz Friends, I wanted to ask about affiliate terms pages. I'm assuming that if I have an affiliate banner where someone clicks on it, and I get a penny, that I need to have an affiliate disclosure or some sort of link saying that I make money. I'm know is some legal ground here, but just curious if this is how the concept works? Thank you so much!

A campaign ghost keeps returning to my Google Analytics - Help!
A couple of campaign tracking links were created on my homepage (leading to internal pages), these were removed a few weeks ago (100% removed from the site). I understand there is a 6 month window and as long as a user returns (no matter from which source) they will be counted as a session against that campaign. Since these campaign links were set-up in error, I hoped creating a fresh new view within Google Analytics would stop them appearing. However they are still showing as sessions even in the new view (created after removing the campaign links in question). Is there anyway to stop this happening!? I want to be able to report on sessions correctly. Thanks, Sam

How long should an old site redirecting to a new site remain activated on a server?
Once I switch a site to a new domain (with links to corresponding/relative pages), will I have to keep the old site live forever for those links to work, or how long should I wait before I inactivate the old site on our server?

HTTPS redirecting to subdomain; do I need to 301 to HTTP first?
Hello there, quick question on HTTPS downgrade to HTTP. Originally, full site was HTTPS. Redesign eliminated need for secure layer. Site currently has https 301'd to sub.domain.com. Ideally, site would live at domain.com, but with the old site having been indexed https, the security warning triggers when you visit, hence the 301 to a subdomain. Thinking possible solutions here are to a) add back in secure layer or b) 301 all old https pages to new http pages. Have I overlooked something? With (a), I will see no SEO impact, correct? With (b), can I expect impact similar to a relaunch? Have seen a lot of chatter that there is some impact in switching http to https, but not much the other way. Any help much appreciated!

How can we improve our e-commerce site architecture to help best preserve Page Authority?
Today I installed the SEOMoz toolbar for Firefox (very cool, highly recommended). I was comparing our site http://www.ccisolutions.com to this competitor: http://www.uniquesquared.com For the most part, the deeper I go in our site the more the page authority drops. We have a few exceptions where the page authority of a subcategory page is actually better than the cat. page one level up. In comparison, when I was looking at http://www.uniquesquared.com I noticed that their page authority stays at "21" on every single category page I visit. Are you seeing what I'm seeing? Is this potentially a problem with the tool bar or, is there something significantly different about their site architecture that allows them to maintain that PA across all category and sub category pages? Is there something fundamentally wrong with our (http://www.ccisolutions.com) site architecture? I understand that we have longer URLs, but this is an old store with a lot of SKUs, so we have decided not to remove the /category/ and /product/ from the URLs because the 301 redirects that would result wouldn't pass all of the authority they've built up over the years. Interested to know viewpoints on the site architecture and how it might be improved. Thanks!

Is it OK to 301 Redirect http://homepage.com to http://blog.homepage.com?
I don't have a homepage built yet, and I suspect that my blog will be my primary SEO draw in the long term, so I'd like to do a 301 redirect (for the techies, I'm doing it in Django with http.HttpResponsePermanentRedirect ) I just wanted to confirm that this wouldn't cause any problems as Google gets used to my page (it's only been up for a few days) Thanks! -matt
