Using category pages in Wordpress
-
In our niche we have one main keyword, which represents the entire category.
We are using wordpress. I am trying to understand the best URL structure and wonder if the below is a good approach:
- This category page will be written to contain an article on the subject.
- The posts that are put into that category will subsequently appear on this page, below that article.
- Each of those posts would be targeting a related keyword. e.g. I would write a post which has, as the main target keyword: "MainKeyword training" and another post, which would be targeting "MainKeyword techniques" ... (and so on).
Thanks for your advice.

Thanks Richard! Glad it'e been helpful. I think I'll be doing a WP Mozinar beginning of June too as we've found the community just has tons of WP questions.

Dan, Â thank you for your post om WP SEO. Â It is the most informative piece of writing I have found on the subject. Â I'm going to dig into my sites this weekend to make sure I have set up my blogs per your instructions.

Yup! A page is a much better way to target a keyword than a category archive. That better fots the concept of a landing page.
Hope the video is helpful too

And thanks for these link, by the way... watching the video now

Great, thanks Dan.
You're right to suspect I can't really use the home page for this.
Would an example of what you mean by static page be this kind of thing:
http://www.copyblogger.com/copywriting-101/
It gives detail on the subject and links out to related posts...

Hi Andrew
Without knowing the niche it's a little tough to say, but I'll give a general answer.
First off, a category page is typically not also written as an article its self. It is an "archive" which is always to be used to list the posts within that archive. You can set up a custom category page, to display unique content at the top (see how Sugarrae does it:Â http://www.sugarrae.com/social-media/)
Next, a category page isn't the best type of thing to target your main keyword with. If it's the main keyword for your niche (thus your entire site I presume) the homepage would target that keyword.
Categories should traditionally be used to divide your blog into 5-8 topic "buckets" in which all your posts will fall into 1-2 of them. Users can navigate easily through your different blog posts etc.
If you are not keen to use the homepage to target the main keyword, I would suggest just a static page. Category archives generally do not rank as well as the homepage, pages or posts.

Create Page Titles from H1 using Yoast?
I'm working on a site that has 280 blog posts that have either been migrated from an old CMS site or created on the Dev version of the new WordPress site. We've written 280 unique meta descriptions so they don't truncate but it there a quick way I can export the current H1s and then import them into Yoast so they are set as the Page Titles? I've written unique Page Titles and meta descriptions for all the Service and Products page and just want a way to speed up the blog posts as their H1s are really good and what I would use as Page Titles anyway. Any help, greatly appreciated!

Help! Pages not being indexed
Hi Mozzers, I need your help.
Technical SEO | | bshanahan
Our website (www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com) stopped being indexed in search engines following a round of major changes to URLs and content. There were a number of dead links for a few days before 301 redirects were properly put in place. And now, only 3 pages show up in bing when I do the search "site:barnettcapitaladvisors.com". A bunch of pages show up in Google for that search, but they're not any of the pages we want to show up. Our home page and most important services pages are nowhere in search results. What's going on here?
Our sitemap is at http://www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com/sites/default/files/users/AndrewCarrillo/sitemap/sitemap.xml
Robots.txt is at:Â http://www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com/robots.txt Thanks!0 -

New EMD update effected my mom's legit author page? From page 1 in SERP to nowhere for her name
I think my mom's site, MargaretTerry.com was hit by this update for her name "Margaret Terry". Went from bouncing around the first page on google.com and .ca all the time to nowhere on the index. The results are now very strange, a mix of Youtube, linked in, and small book stores that she has done events at recently to promote her first book. I was checking after some of my SEO buddys were freaking out about their EMD's getting hit on Sunday. She is an aspiring author with a book coming out this month. There is obviously no ads or spam content on the site... I have never done SEO for it either except a bit of on page I guess. It sucks that people might be grabbing her book soon and when they Google her name nothing shows up. This couldn't have really happened at a worse time. Not to mention the hours spent building the site to her liking, free of charge of course đ Is there anyone I can contact there to help me out? Shouldn't and EMD that is someones name still rank when you search their name?

Use target keyword on several page titles or homepage only?
If I want my homepage to rank for a keyword (ie "red widgets"), does it support or dilute the homepage's rank if I use the keyword on other pages? I can see it working either way: The search engine looks at your site, sees that the target keyword is used throughout the site, and ranks the site higher as a result. Using the keyword on several pages makes it so none of them stand out, and ultimately it's harder to rank highly. Thoughts?

Best Strategy to Rank Wordpress Category
Does anyone some suggestions for best practices when trying to rank categories using Wordpress? Unless you filter it, Â a category provides a complete list of all posts in that category. I can add a good title and description but am not sure beyond that. Has anyone tried using a sticky post in the category and putting keyword body text in that? Lookin' for ideas.
