Traffic Drop in 1 month!
-
Hi guys,
ok, i'm at the end of my line with this one, my site www.golfclothingdirect.co.uk has taken a pounding since 4th April and i'm blowed if i can find a real reason for it. Traffic has been increasing slowly in line with budget, sales were picking up, and coming into season should have been better - 24th & 25th robot had an access issue - host contacted and said there had been a site issue, but resolved and now all A OK. Sales are terrible and traffic is grinding.
All comments greatly taken on board!
Thanks
Mark

What are your competitors doing?
Some of my competitors in seasonal SERPs buy links shortly before the season begins. That pushes them up SERPs and lowers my rankings/traffic. Then as the season matures they remove the links (to save money and reduce risk).
What can you do about it? Make a stronger site so that you will be harder / more expensive to beat next year.

Hi Mark
I'm surrounded by 8 monitor trading desk setups at the moment so the only light I'm getting is artificial!
In the second URL provided, I can see you added a canonical URL to that page - but the page is still being indexed by Google. When did you implement the tag?
That would actually be a good way of making sure Google doesn't index the second URL and thus the duplicate content, but it may take a while for Google to recognise the tag. I can see the first URL was last cached on April 18 and the second URL not cached at all - I'm wondering once it has been updated the URL might be deindexed and this aspect of duplicate content might be solved.
Regardless, it does sound like you're on the right track to solving those problems and disabling them altogether does sound like a good idea for now. Hope it helps get the site back on its feet.

Hey Tom,
Thanks again, hope you are enjoying some sun in the City today!
We have established that the attribute breadcrumbs are causing duplicate content issues, as when a category has 2 or more items it's rewriting them! Taken this to the developers and the answer was "it's just how it works". So we are disabling them for now, which is a bit crap but it really has to be done.
Examples of this
http://www.golfclothingdirect.co.uk/Category/Under-Armour-Sale-Items
The latter may be gone by the time you read this, but that's the issue there. Also have had a nightmare with the /robot.text but it seems to be fine now.
Yeah it's a pure organic site, a little bit of FB and mailing to existing customers (funny as I was just reading your article on that earlier today). Not seeing any link worries in GWMT, the site was upgraded from an old site in August last year where they did lose a lot, a hell of a lot of traffic. they had some real bad links in there which we stripped out!
I'm kind of limited by budget on this one, but trying to make it as clean as possible and also getting some real good content written to give it a genuine boost.
Thanks again for the input, it's very much appreciated.

Hey there Mark
The access issue may have effected the traffic and rankings, but that should have recovered by now if it was the sole issue. Similarly, given the kind of shop you're running, you'd assume now would be the peak time for seasonality, so I think it's a fair assumption that something could be up with your site.
At first glance, it looks like Panda/duplicate content could be an issue with your site - as it is with many ecommerce stores. Just to use these two examples: example 1, example 2, you can clearly see that these two pages have nearly identical content. I think it's fairly safe to say that, in the Googlebot's eyes, these pages could be seen as duplicate content.
I haven't checked other examples, but given the nature of your business you may have a wide range of similar issues, potentially causing a big duplicate content issue that may have triggered the Panda algorithm. In doing so, traffic would have fallen.
There could be a number of other reasons - is organic search historically the main driver of traffic to your site? Has its dropped been the main driver for your site's drop overall? Have you seen rankings for certain keywords drop as well - and have those drops been sharp? If the answer is yes to all of those issues, to me it would look more and more like a Panda problem.
The remedy to this is to either deindex duplicate pages (not ideal obviously), make the content unique enough on each page or work out a solution that serves up the product once, but the one product page includes all colour variations - just as you have done with the sizes for those pages I linked to.
Of course, if you were relying on rankings and organic search traffic before and those rankings have now dropped, it could be an inbound link issue. Check google webmasters for any messages about unnatural links, but if you can rule that out it may just be that the links pointing to your site are not passing on the strength they once were, or that competitors have entered the market with a stronger link profile. Earning authoritative and valuable links could increase your rankings, should a penalty not be present on the site.
Hope this helps to at least diagnose the root of the problem and if you'd like to chat further about it, feel free to ask away here or PM me. It can be terribly frustrating when this happens, but the problems are very much fixable so don't be too disheartened.

Organic search traffic stats "leaking" into other channels?
Hi Everyone I have a website and am slowly getting to grips with SEO. Last week I enabled a new channel in google analytics which was "email" so I could track effectiveness of the weekly emails we send out. The good news is that a ton of traffic is now being assigned to the email "channel" in GA but my organic search traffic in channels is now down week on week. That feels odd as my overall traffic to the site is up, week on week. Does anyone have any experience of new channels coming on stream and canniballising old ones? Could it be that some of the traffic associated to organic search previously was actually coming from my email, I just didn't know it? thanks all!

"Items 1 - 24 of 75" Appearing in Meta Description - How Do I Remove It?
Hey guys, I've noticed that the item count is appearing at the beginning of the meta description for our brand pages, e.g. "Items 1 - 24 of 75 -". The issue I have with this is that it reduces the character limit (due to truncation), consequently leaving me with little room to play with to include more useful information. Is there a way to remove this? Cheers, A

Ranking dropped after domain change
Dear Moz Community, first of all excuse my bad english, i am from europe and my english is not the best 😉
Technical SEO | | domiji
I use Moz Analytics for several days and try to figure out why our "main keyword" totally dropped after our domain change. We started this year with a new company name and a new domain. Our old domain was dp-hochzeitsfotograf.de and the main keyword we try to rank for was "hochzeitsfotograf" which means "wedding photographer" here in Germany. Last summer we reached position 1 and short before our domain change we still ranked on position 6. We register the domain change in google webmaster tools and redirect all urls via 301 redirect to the new domain. Our new domain name is yourheyday.de and all rankings adopted pretty good except our main keyword (now position 62) which could break our neck the next few month. I would be so so happy and really appreciate if anyone of you have an advise for us. Thanks and many greetings from europe

Mysterious drop of website ranking in google
Usually, I don't want to bother anybody by posting silly questions on forums. But this time I really might need advice. My wife and I took over the website maintenance and e-marketing of a local air conditioning company end of March this year. Before that the applied SEO strategies were not very user friendly and a little too search engine focused (spammy keyword stuffed articles, confusing website structure, a lot of directory links). Yesterday night (May 15th) the website more or less stopped ranking. For search terms like "ac repair englewood fl" or "trane north port" and many more the website was on page 1. Here are some more details: I replaced the old website with a newer version end of April. Since some of old the url structure did not apply any longer, I did a setup of around 30 301-redirects in .htaccess. The new site seemed to rank more or less as expected. The homepage has a PakeRank of 1 (seomoz Page Authority is 31). I am working on that but good natural links just take some time. site:kobiecomplete.com still brings up all the pages Google Webmaster Tools notified me on May 12th that there was a possible outage: _"_While crawling your site, we have noticed an increase in the number of transient soft 404 errors around 2012-05-08 16:00 UTC (London, Dublin, Edinburgh). Your site may have experienced outages. These issues may have been resolved. Here are some sample pages that resulted in soft 404 errors:" The listed pages under "some sample pages" are only pages from the old website which do not exist any longer and the 301 redirect was not setup. But this should have been already any issue before, if at all.

I added the missing 301 redirects and marked them as fixed in Google Webmaster Tools. I had a copy of the website on a testing webspace (root directory of brightsidewg.com). Even though I had robots.txt set to disallow everything and WordPress search engine privacy set to do not index / follow, the website appeared on the Google search results yesterday night instead of the original website (kobiecomplete.com). Even though brightsidewg was a few ranks worse than kobiecomplete.com was, it was still ranking.
To remove the duplicate content, I deleted everything on brightsidewg.com and requested the removal of the website in the Webmaster Tools. Now brightsidewg.com is not any longer indexed (good) but it didn't help the ranking of kobiecomplete.com. Especially the homepage and the service area pages were ranking pretty decent on Google before yesterday night. Now I can not find them at all. Only other less important pages rank on page 8+ No malware on website I did not do any big changes on the website yesterday (only really minor ones). I did not acquire any weird/paid links even though there is a new link from a PageRank 0 website which I did not setup: http://www.indo-karya.com/detail/news/2012/kombise But that alone I think would not be enough for a penalty. It almost looks like that Google applied a partial -950 filter!? I could submit the website for reconsideration to Google and tell them about the duplicate content issue with my testing webspace brightsidewg.com. What do you think about it and what shall I do? Thank you so much for any help!0 -
Getting on to page 1 again
I have recently set up a website, and as soon as it got indexed by google, I ranked on the first page at number 10... However, Ever since I have started trying to backlink.. the more I seem to do, the more I seem to drop down the rankings! The same for both Bing and Yahoo... I am really not sure what the problem is. My site is www.arilinegamesatc.com, and the ranking words are airline games and airline game. Any help woudl be greatly appreciated!

Drop down menu
Does the first anchor text link rule ( the first link is given weight ) applies to links in the body of the content only. If there are links in the drop down menu, and in the body of the content, does the above rule applies to links in the drop down menu.

I had a massive ogranic traffic drop in the past 72 hours (80%). What should I do? I
I am very very worried as my organic traffic suddenly came to pretty much a halt last Friday. We have been working very hard on content in the last 2 years and have 0 duplicated content with many thousand travel guides, tips and other travel related info. We are also publishing a successful travel blog which used to get quite a bit off traffic. Everything stalled last Friday and since we are operating in the travel industry which is very competitive, this will be very hard on us. In fact, I fear that we will not survive this drop for more than 2-3 months. How do we find out about what happened and what can we do to get our SERPs back? Thanks!

Large Drop in Brand-name Traffic
Hey folks, I recently noticed a very large drop in brand-name traffic (in the realm of 50%) which coincided with some SEO changes to target non-brand-name searches. Thing is, the site is still ranking #1 for all the brand-name searches that the traffic drop happened in. (checked terms via SEOmoz toolbar, and also proxy with Bruce Clay's toolbar). Any thoughts on where to start lookingfor the problem or what might have caused it? If this hadn't happened at the same time as other changes, I'd put this down to non-SEO problems.
