So many questions!

Yesterday was a jubilant day!
Our website http://www.farnorthkennel.com hit the #2 spot on google for one of our keyword searches "german shepherd puppies in Alaska." We are new at this and it took a lot of work and about 2 months to do this (I realize this is fast).
What happened overnight? We have new pages on page 1 towards the bottom, but our homepage fell to around page 4? What would make this happen? I didn't make any updates to the homepage recently.
Am I linking to it too much interally? Am I running too many categories? The "too many on pages links" warning comes up all of the time, but I feel like my site is structured user friendly.
I am blogging like mad and successfully getting guest blog posts on reputable sites like mad. I have 30,000 Facebook fans....
but will never understand google.
Any takers? What happened overnight?

Yes I think from the small snapshot I viewed your link profile looks very strong. Small, but strong. Just keep going at it and you'll be fine. Keep it relevant, keep your content strong, and you can't fail.
-
Thanks for telling me this, Takeshi!
I didn't know most of this information. Very helpful information.
-
It happened literally overnight today. The competitors seem a little shuffled. The people at the number one slot, who have a small DA seem to always be in that slot.
I'll get there!
-
Hi Jesse,
Thanks so much.
Did you look at my link-building to see that it's good? That'd be a major relief - I have been working hard. The backlinks are small - I've been doing this for about a month.
Am I linking within the site too much?
Thanks again!
-
Any number of things could have happened, just like these guys said. Takeshi's list is spot-on.
I would add that you really don't have a very large backlink profile at all. Your DA is weak. This is NOT a bad thing whatsoever. It just means you have some good ole SEO work to do!
The good news is you are not penalized and you will not be penalized if you continue building links the way you said you are. Keep it up and you'll have that page one listing back soon enough!
Good luck

First of all, Google rankings fluctuate all the time, so don't get too attached to your rankings. You don't control the search results, Google does, and Google makes changes to their algorithm all the time.
Beyond Google just being Google, there are plenty of other possibilities for rankings fluctuations:
- Competitors doing SEO on your sites
- New competitors entering the niche
- Losing links that you used to have
- A drop in PageRank for sites linking to you
- Google changing the value of sites linking to you
- Over-optimized anchor text
- Personalization/geo-specific rankings
- Etc.
You can try investigating some of these and seeing if you can determine the cause of the drop, but unless you're doing something completely wrong or blackhat, focus on making the best site that you possibly can for the query and continue building backlinks. Show Google that you deserve to be listed #1.
-
When did that happen? Google may have the results shuffled for a day or two while the index is updating. It's not a surprise to have a site ranked 2nd one day and the next day 17th and the next day back in 2nd place.
Did you check what your competitors are doing?

Possible penalty question - need expert help
hallo everyone, I am posting this question to the MOZ community, because I could not find any useful information or proper advice so far, even after consulting a few local SEO experts. I noticed from the end of september a steady and consistent decrease in visits (please see attached pdf) for my website https://bastabollette.it I lost so far almost 40%. Please consider that I have not changed my habits in blog posting lately, both in quantity and quality. I have not made any subtantial change on the website lately. I did a general audit of the site asking to an expert but apart from some generic suggestions (like: "work on increasing PR, add more quality backliks, use more no-follow links, fix broken links" - things I am currently going to fix anyway) I don't really understand the reason of the drop. Please also note the strange drop of 11/22/15 (see search console screenshot). Can you please help me? thank you. Selezione_018.jpg Selezione_019.jpg

Question about cannonical URLs for a site redesign
Hello folks, I've redesigned a site completely and I ended up changing their CMS to wordpress as well. So their URLs which mostly ended in .html and folder organization have been thrown completely out the window with wordpress' '/' format. I'm just wondering what the best way is to approach retaining all the site's previous "link juice". What should I be doing here? How do I make sure their organic rankings don't fall? (They've left their previous SEO firm so they can't help me out on this). Thanks!

How do you handle a "too many inbound links" notice on your crawl diagnostics report?
How do you handle a "too many inbound links" notice on your crawl diagnostics report? The url's identified come from our blog....is it reading all the blog post URL's and giving me a notice? Is this ok to leave all the links? Or would anyone recommend no follow tags on all of our blog posts?

Weird Analytics Question
Looking at a Google Analytics report for a client - Traffic Sources - Referrals - Landing Pages from one particular referrer. This one referral site is a large trade directory that links onto several deep pages of the site, but also links onto the homepage. Analytics is showing the one landing page as //index.html. That's 2 // - not one. If you click on the link, it's a 404. I've never seen this in Analytics before. I'm looking at the client's info on this trade directory site and I can't see a link that points to this 404. The majority of incoming traffic from this site is apparently coming to this //index.html page, so you'd think it would be coming from their main profile on the site. But it's not there. Also, if you had all this referral traffic coming to a 404, you'd expect a really high bounce rate, but it's not - it's average. The client also has a sister site also listed in this directory, and I'm not seeing this same issue in their Analytics. Is this just some weird glitch in Analytics?

Megamenu: Too many links really bad?
Hi there! Our site hosts paid training videos, and has a javascript menu that lists EVERY video on the site, and it is our most-used method of navigation. The menu is structured to look like the business software our training videos cover, so it's very intuitive for users. That said, since we currently have so many videos EVERY page has more than 250 links. The only way to get this down to under 100 as SEOMOZ recommends is to delete/hide the link from being seen by search engines. What should I do? Is the menu worth being visible to search engines? businessonetraining.com

2 questions on avoiding issues with Google and while being right in it.
Hi SEOmoz community In fact I have two questions I would like to ask (with future SEO in mind). Do you consider a WordPress Multisite or various Single installs 'safer' for SEO? Theoretically, having various sites packed into one Multisite network seems like an ideal solution. However, is there a chance that once a site in the network encounters a little 'negative turbulence', that your other sites in the network might get impacted too due to the cross-referencing, linked account i.e. Webmaster Tools etc.? It would seem outrageous, but then again I wouldn't rule it out. Do I even have to go as far as setting up new Gmail, Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools accounts, so they (the sites) are technically not linked? You can see, I don't trust search engines one bit... Is there still a point posting articles once Google is having a hissy fit with your site? Basically I am currently going through a 'rankings and traffic drops storm'. It's not as bad as being de-indexed, but it's still having enough of an impact. In addition, Google does not seem to treat my new articles (unique content) with the same attention anymore i.e. does not seem to index them 'fully' or not at all (i.e. posting the headline in Google should return the article, but it doesn't). Is there even a point spending time now and posting new material or may it pick it up again once I am through this low phase? Does Google still index what it considers worth or is it a waste of time right now to keep posting, posting and posting more? Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
