Do https sites rank as well as http sites?
-
2 Questions:
Question 1 - We currently have our entire site running on https (the http pages 301-redirect to the https versions). Assuming that the https pages load as quickly as the http versions, is it a problem that the entire site is https?
The only official answer I've been able to find is this 2011 video where Matt Cutts basically says "I don't know" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeFo4ytOk8M
Question 2 - Is there any problem with having half our site running on https only (with the http pages redirected), and the other half (our blog) running on http only (with all https blog pages redirected to the http versions)?
Thanks in advance for any input!
Justin

Very helpful info, thanks!

Hi Justin,
Cutts has said more recently that there should not be any problem going the all https route, although he notes to try it out first on a 'lower traffic domain' if possible(!). https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4801641 Quite a few popular sites are heading this way (twitter, fb, paypal for example)
Assuming that is correct and you are not seeing any ranking/indexing issues with the site currently in https, there should not be an obvious reason to worry.
For your second question, again there should be no issue with running the blog on a non https url, but you would do well to avoid having links to the https version of the blog that are then 301 redirected to the http version. So making sure all your internal links to the blog are already http would be a good idea and ideally all links from the blog back to the site would already be https.
Beyond the page loading times, https urls can often have gotcha moments where certain elements of the page (js or css links, image urls etc) can be non https and produce warnings in some browsers which is bad for user experience. Sometimes the pages these errors occur on can be pretty deeply hidden so good to be methodical. Also need to keep in mind that your robots.txt and sitemap should also be served on the https protocol and make sure that your sitemap is not automatically generating https urls for all the site (blog included) which can potentially create unneeded confusion.
Hope that helps!

Hi,
There won't be any problem with your site if you use Https, and for blog Http. These two protocols servs as a request and response from the servers. If you use ""http"" then the communicating data will not be secured, if you use https (http includes secure socket layer) you data will be safe, main thing it will not effect to SEO part. for more information you can read http://theprofessionalspoint.blogspot.in/2012/04/http-vs-https-similarities-and.html

Unexpected ranking
We recently built a page for a client which consisted of a one paragraph of about 30-40 words, We weren't expecting this to rank, but it has ranked at #3 on UK Google. So, we are now trying to work out the likely reason for this, as pages which we have optimised do not rank this well. We realise there are a number of factors which influence ranking, but on this particular page we have a news module at the bottom of the page containing 8 short intros to other related content. Could it be that search engines are ranking for the main content shown by the menu link and the 8 short intros associated with that main content? Hope that makes sense. Thanks Ian

An apparent ranking mystery...
I built the site https://www.sylvaniachurch.com about 5 years ago, but the site has been live for more than a decade. Tyler has hundreds of churches and Sylvania Church currently site ranks second for most variations of "churches in tyler tx." Sylvania has a well-optimized homepage, several well-optimized subpages, a consistent sermon audio feed, and an increasingly used blog. In addition to what's on the site, there are a few other relevant sites that link to the Sylvania site and I have completed profiles on virtually every business listing site known to man. Here's the oddity. The website that ranks third and even displaces Sylvania for the second place spot from time to time (http://www.crosspointecc.com/) has only been a live URL for a few years, has no readable text on the homepage other than the nav menu, has very little content on the subpages, no blog that I can find, and fewer links from less authoritative sites. What's even odder to me is that Sylvania Church has the following numbers according to the MozBar: PA: 26 mR: 3.64 mT: 3.28 DA: 14 DmR: 3.27 DmT: 2.74 The numbers for CrossPointe: PA: 24 (2 less than Sylvania) mR: 4.68 (1.04 higher than Sylvania) mT: 5.30 (2.02 higher than Sylvania) DA: 13 (1 less than Sylvania) DmR: 2.98 (.28 less than Sylvania) DmT: 3.49 (.75 higher than Sylvania) The obvious question is, "Why does Moz like this site better than mine? What am I missing?" Thanks for any help you guys can give!

Homepage ranking above category page, but no keywords in there! Why?
So...we have a 5 year diary product page at TOAD diaries. It's had a lot of on page treatment: keyword in title, alt text, decent copy, pictures of the product etc. Find it here - http://www.toaddiaries.co.uk/shop/5-year-diary So we rank 22nd for 5 year diary, but google sends the customer to the home page! There no mention of 5 year diaries on there. Seems ridiculous! I can't help but think we should rank better for this as it's a low difficulty term (according to keyword difficulty tool on MOZ). Any thoughts on why this might be? Oh, Google HAS indexed the 5 year diary page. Used a search operator to check that first (thanks to you guys on here:) ) Thanks.

Why is our site dropping in Domain Authority
Hi all, I have a question. I have been working SEO on our site www.betxpert.com for the last 4-6 weeks and I have been looking forward to seeing the new DA and PA numbers. However today, our DA is now 30...where it was 31 or 33 a couple of days ago. How come the decrease? I have only improved the site i should say... Hope someone can shed a little light on the issue... -Rasmus
