Advanced Title Tags

Looking for some advanced help here. I've been reading a lot of conflicting information on this, and I am hoping someone can clear this up.
My question is regarding length and complexity of title tags. For example, my top level keywords are:
IT Support, IT Services, IT Outsourcing, Help Desk, etc.
I also have pages for many modified versions ex: IT Support Services, Managed IT Services, etc.
I have robust pages for each. Should my title tag be:
IT Support | CSM Corp. - Simple
IT Support Company | CSM Corp. (Picks up a longer tail)
or
IT Support | Secondary Keyword | CSM Corp.
Does adding secondary keywords dilute the strength of the primary keyword?
If long is preferable, can someone give me an example using "IT Support"?

AHA! Figured it out. You're using a responsive slider, Rahul. That means the slider (and its images) get resized depending on the size of the browser window.
Those of us seeing blurry images are using a larger browser window, causing the images to be up-sized and going blurry.
To get around this, you're going to have to use larger images for the slider to keep the bigger browser windows sharp. (This is one of the classic tradeoffs of responsive design - the files sizes actually have to be bigger, even though they may get displayed on a small phone.
You'll need to arrive at a happy medium, and your analytics can help here. Ideally, you want to check the average browser window size for desktop users, but that takes some extra customization Instead, at leas look at the average screen size of your desktop users and make an estimate of the typical browser window they use. Then check what size the slider images are for those screen sizes. Then redo the images to look crisp at that size. Compress them as much as possible while still maintaining quality, so you don't kill the file size.
That way, small screens will get the image as compressed as possible, but large screens will still see a large enough version of the image to be crisp.

Your figures are off, Rahul. Using the example of the IT Group photo ( the men & women standing in the middle of the hallway of servers-first image) the slider image is 337 pixels high, but the image file feeding it is only 250px high.
So the image is being up-sized by over 30%. That amount of upscaling will blur any image. Need to go back to the original image and recreate a new image for the slider that is 337 pixels high (or whatever the slider is actually using - I just used a rough on-screen ruler for my measurements so could be off a couple of pixels)

It looks to me like you need to increase the size of the images, Rahul. The images' dimensions are smaller than the way they are being rendered in the slider, which means the slider is having to up-size them to display. Up-sizing an image like that always makes it more blurry as data must be interpolated. (Doing this up-sizing in an image editor like PhotoShop will always be higher quality, but even then some blur is inevitable).
Best to redo the images from their originals at the size the slider is actually using them.

NOTE! Image resolution has nothing to do with how images will display on the web. Image dimensions (height and width in pixels) are the only thing that matters.

Can you clarify? I am using Layer Slider, which uses a mix of text and graphics. You can see it at www.csm-corp.com. The sliders are generally 250 high, and the images (people) started off at 300 high. They needed to be scaled down to fit, and they don't encompass the whole slider.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Rahul,
If your slider if 800px wide and 400px tall for example, make your images and art the exact same size.
Downsizing a 1000px wide image to 800px wide will maintain crispness.
Upsizing a 600px wide image to 800px wide will blur it.
If your images and art are typically smaller than your slider, reduce the size of your slider to accommodate your content.

No offense taken. They are high res. The slider is blurring them. Should I reduce the size of the slider?

In your AdWords account, don't forget to use the Keyword Tool.
It isn't the end-all be-all, but it will definitely get you on the right path.
P.S. I looked up your site and I just want to add a bit of criticism from a user's standpoint (please take it in the spirit in which it is intended.): All your graphics on that front page banner are... blurry. Get 'em high-res if you can cause it hurt my eyes to look at and I'm sure I won't be the only one bothered by that. Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to be helpful.

I've found that using too many keywords in the title tag will dilute the main keyword, but the jury is out on that one whether it's 100% true.
Are you running a ppc campaign? PPC campaigns will often reveal the magic keyword that converts the best. Once you have this data, you can experiment with variations of the term to form the best possible title tag that revolves around conversions rather than traffic.
Jerry also has a good point about looking to see what competitors are targeting. They wouldn't be targeting those keywords if they weren't profitable -
You probably have already done this, but do you have any keywords that are more actionable? Such as "IT Service Reviews?" I just did a few quick searches for those high level keywords, and they keep producing research based results (i.e. Wikipedia, etc).
Anyway, the best tactic is to take a look at the top 5-10 prospects for your specific vertical, and see what they are doing. If they you can find a pattern in those title tags, then you can determine your strategy based on that.

Looking for opinions on structuring meta title tags/page title/menu title/H1
Hi everyone I am hoping a few of you can share your opinions. I have been having conversations (okay, healthy debates) about how to write/structure meta title tag and how to compliment them with the H1, page title, menu name. To help explain the thought processes I will use a pretend keyword. How about "screwdriver". Case: (I made this up) we are redesigning a website for a construction tools manufacturing company (pretend name: ABC Tools) targeting OEMs who are interested in purchasing large quantities of tools. The product categories (to become main menu items) are Screwdrivers, Nails, Drills, and Hammers. (bear with me .... this is just an example I am making up on the fly) K. Circling back to screwdrivers - let's say we have one landing page (a primary category page and in the main menu) listing products and great details about screwdrivers. Focus keywords are screwdriver manufacturer, screwdriver supplier, construction screwdrivers Below are questions being debated. If you are willing ... how would you address these questions? And, can you explain WHY? QUESTION ONE: How would you structure the meta title tag (feel free to write one of your own) Screwdriver Manufacturer - Construction Screwdriver | ABC Tools ABC Tools - US-based Screwdriver Manufacturer Supplier Near You High-Quality Screwdrivers for Construction with ABC Tools QUESTION TWO: how would you write the H1 on the page? Would it match the meta tag? OR, would you write something different using the primary keyword? QUESTION THREE Remembering this is not a blog post ... it is a primary landing page linked to the main navigation. What would the menu title be? (remember the product categories above are how the main menu items are bucketed) Screwdrivers Screwdriver Manufacturer Typically in WordPress, the H1 and the menu title is auto-populated using the page title (not the title tag)... So, if we use Screwdrivers as the page title but we want the H1 to match the meta title tag, would we manually change the H1? Or, have the page title and title tag match, but manually change the menu item?

Href Lang & Canonical Tags
Hi I have 2 issues appearing on my site audit, for a number of pages. I don't think I actually have an issue but just want to make sure. Using this page as an example - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/0-5-l-capacity-round-safety-can-149p210 The errors I get are: 1. Conflicting hreflang and rel=canonical Canonical page points to a different language URL - when using href & canonicals, it states I need a self referential canonical . The page above is a SKU page, so we include a canonical back to the original model page so we don't get lots of duplicate content issues. Our canonical will point to - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/justrite-round-safety-cans 2. No self referencing hreflang. Are these big issues? I'd think the bigger issue would be if I add self referencing canonicals and end up with lots of duplicate content. Any advice would be much appreciated 🙂

Hreflang Tags & Canonicals Being Used
We have a site on which both hreflang tags and canonicals are being used. There are multiple languages, but for this I'll explain our problem using two. There are a ton of dupe page titles coming up in GSC, and we're not sure if we have an issue or not. First, the hreflang tags are implement properly. UK page pointing there, US page pointing there. Further down the page, there are canonical tags - except the UK canonical tag points to the UK page, and the US version points to the US page. I'm not sure if this will cause an issue in terms of SEO or indexing. Has anyone experienced this before or does anything have any insight into this? Thanks much! Matt

Are ALL duplicate title tags bad??
We’ve had some success recently by reducing the number of duplicate title tags on our website. We have managed to fix all the simple cases but there are a number of stubborn examples that we don’t know how to fix. A lot of the duplicate tags come from the website’s forums. Many questions have been asked multiple times over the years where the user has phrased the question in the same way. This has led to many cases where different forums posts have the same title tag. For example, there are six title tags with the words ‘’need help”! These are being highlighted as duplicates and currently we have several thousand of these. Would this be a problem? I’d be tempted to say that we should leave them as they don’t seem unnatural to me. One solution other solution we are considering is to append the forum name to the question to any post after the original, falling back to appending the date if that doesn’t distinguish it. Do people think that this is a good solution to implement or would it be better to leave these duplicate title tags as they are? Any help would be appreciated 🙂

Google tagged URL an overly-dynamic URL?
I'm reviewing my campaign, and spotted the overly-dynamic URL box showing a few links. Reviewing it, they are my Google Tagged URLs (utm_source, utm_medium_utm_campaign etc) I've turned some internal links to Google Tagged URLs but should these cause concern?

Dynamically creating unique page titles on enterprise site
Hi, I want to dynamically create unique page titles (possible meta descriptions too) on a 10k page site. Many of the page titles are either duplicates or are missing. I heard about the option of grabbing the page titles from a database or possibly using the h1 as the page title. solmelia.com (the website consist of mostly static pages) Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Should I prevent Google from indexing blog tag and category pages?
I am working on a website that has a regularly updated Wordpress blog and am unsure whether or not the category and tag pages should be indexable. The blog posts are often outranked by the tag and category pages and they are ultimately leaving me with a duplicate content issue. With this in mind, I assumed that the best thing to do would be to remove the tag and category pages from the index, but after speaking to someone else about the issue, I am no longer sure. I have tried researching online, but there isn't anything that provided any further information. Please can anyone with any experience of dealing with issues like this or with any knowledge of the topic help me to resolve this annoying issue. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Paul
