What Should I Do With 404 Errors?
-
I got lots of 404 errors due to the fact that I removed some crappy content. Do I need to worry about this?
I know eventually they will go away when Google crawls the whole website and doesn't find any more links to those pages.

Hi,
404 pages won't affect your site performance in any way - aslong as you don't heavily link to those pages internally.
Redirecting, in my opinion, is not a very good idea - as long as you don't have some better content that is touching the exact same subject, in a better way, as the old page. if this is not the case - I would't spend any more time on those - Google will clean them up after 3-4 bot visits.
cheers !

404's in Google Webmaster Console show for 90 days (Even though I have seen then appear for longer). In my opinion, if for the user, it's a good experience for them to be redirected to a better page or a sitemap or homepage or an upper level category page, do that. But if it does not make sense for the user, don't do it.
Just don't have active 404 links within your website. If there are external links pointing to old pages, redirect those to maximize the user experience and SEO value of those links and traffic coming from those. Other then that, I would not worry about it.
I hope this helps.

I thought our 404's would eventually go away. Later discovered that some were also linked from other sites. Moral of the story for us is that we would have done redirects sooner. We're currently chipping away at over 40k 404 errors, but its a high priority for us to redirect each and every one of them. Going forward we are better managing what happens to a link when it gets changed. We dynamically are generating 404's for newly changed URL's (wish we did that sooner...)

Oh, and I assume you have created 404 page within your website .. if not you should do that also to handle the genuine errors, be user of you
-
You should redirect the page you removed to another page within your website.

What do you think of a plugin like this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/auto-redirect-404/

My website is struggling to receive traffic I think I have a serious error
Hi, My website would receive a lot of traffic and then I asked a SEO company who contacted me to do some work on the site. Since then, the site has dropped in the rankings and our traffic has dropped by like a lead balloon. Instead of receiving thousands of visitors, today we have received 10. I am finding that I have articles no longer in Google but they are in Yahoo. Here is an example of an article that was once popular https://www.in2town.co.uk/travel-advice/how-to-save-money-booking-a-holiday-through-a-travel-agent/ I have tried everything and now I do not know where to turn. I am not sure what they have done but everything has now failed. We have not been penalized and our hosting company have said they cannot find anything wrong. Due to this problem we have stopped writing articles and have spent all our time trying to work out what has gone wrong. If anyone can give me advice and point me in the right direction then I would be in your debt.

Hi guys, We plan to close down our blog, which is a subdomain to our anchor site. I need advice on how to keep the link juice and its SEO value. Is it better to 301 redirect the blog to the homepage of our site, or just 404 all the pages of the blog? Thanks

Crawl error vs RSS feed content
Hi, I have a BuddyPress Multisite with sites dedicated to specific RSS feeds. I did this to pull in the content for my users. But they generate a 1000s of SEMOZ errors/warnings for dup content, dup titles, missing metatags. etc. So does keeping the content help my site SEO less than the errors? The content is not under my control so I have no way to relate it to my keywords. Any opinions? I can recreate these RSS sites, so I will probably delete them to see what happens. Larry

404 errors
Im experiencing a different problem. I created a website using wordpress "www.xxxxx.com". When I publish any post (eg:"www.xxxxxx.com/abc/"), along with the post, its also creating another page like "www.xxxxxx.com/abc/www.xxxxx.com" which is a 404 error (showing in SEOmoz reports) automatically the website name is coming at the end (one at first and one at last) and creating a 404 error. Please let me know the reason why its happening and the solution for redirecting all 404 and misspelt pages to home page. Thankyou Raja
