Is it worth 301 redirecting an old backlink from a 404 to a landing page?
-
I was reviewing the 404 report in webmaster tools, when I found a 404 back link from a 10 year old forum topic on a very high DA site. It seems the poster did a direct hotlink to a pdf that was on our site a very long time ago, but is now gone so you get a standard "can not be found" page on our site.
Is it now worth redirecting the url to an appropriate landing page, considering the age of the post/ link and the sites DA, or is it not worth it because of the age of the link, its a forum, and we are still getting some juice from it anyway despite it being a 404, and won't get much more out of it.
Just want to know it good practice if I find many such links (very old links to now 404 pages)
Thanks

so in short seo wise not worth it, only worth it if there is real traffic.
its had no traffic in 4 years, so not worth it
thanks

Hey there
I think you've weighed up the pros and cons from it very accurately. I'm 50/50 on it at the moment as well, but getting this data would help me make the decision if I were in your shoes:
In your Google Analytics data, for the last six months can you dig up how much traffic was referred to your site via the domain in question. You can do this easily by going into GA and selecting Traffic Sources -> Sources -> Referrals on the left hand navigation. Once there, in the small search box on the right hand side type in the website's name - no need for .com etc. really.
Now have a look at your traffic - if there is a decent amount of traffic coming through (hitting the 404 page), I'd say it is worthwhile redirecting it, particularly if that forum is related to your industry. If there isn't a good level of traffic, I wouldn't bother redirecting.
I'm inclined to think that any SEO value, or link equity, that this link once had would have passed by now, so I'd make the decision more on if it's bringing in relative traffic.
Hope this helps.

Reciprocal Backlinks
Hi all, We've just started looking into backlinks for our website, and we're...a bit overwhelmed to say at least. We thought the best way to start with backlinks is to reach out to our industry partners, and ask them to put a link to our website on theirs (in a blog, or a relevant page of course), as it's relevant for users. However, the question we almost always get is, can you do the same and link back to our website? How does google look at reciprocal links? We think they can be seen as a 'transaction of links' and not have as much link juice as links which aren't reciprocal. Is there any best practice for how to approach this? Thank you in advance. Diana

Is it better to have backlinks from domains with medium DA, UR, using same language and good relevancy, or backlinks from domains with high DA, UR but using another language and with less relevancy?
Dear all, while I understand that quality backlinks with high DA, UR, same-language and relevancy would be best, would backlinks with high DA, UR but less relevancy and using languages other than the one used in my website be something good? Or would they do more harm than anything else and still be outcompeted by backlinks with lower DA, UR but same language and/or more relevancy? Thank you Frank

Need advice: How to replace a high-ranking pdf with a landing page -- without dropping much in rank?
Hi! We have a pdf of a white paper on our site that ranks #1 for a niche term. We are now exploring the idea of building a landing page for this paper with an overview (2-3 paragraphs) and a registration form for interested parties to fill out in order to access the paper. Do you think there'd be any hope of ensuring the new landing page would rank almost as well eventually (top 3)? I'm thinking a key consideration would be preserving the link juice from the existing links that are coming into the pdf, and that 301 redirecting the pdf URL to the new landing page URL could help with that. Am I right? Or would it be better to try to reach out to the linking sites and ask them to update their links (seems daunting). Any advice/opinions on this situation would be appreciated. (If folks think that there would be a significant risk of permanently dropping out of the top 5 by attempting this, we would likely choose to leave the pdf ungated as is.) Thanks!! -John

Backlinks 101, one or multiple?
Analyzing a competitor backlink profile I noticed they have the habit of adding multiple links to the guest post/advertorial they get, one link to their site, plus some links to authority site like wikipedia and institutional websites. Is there anyone with some data, testing, and so on, supporting this? I can see their SERP positioning is very good, but they spent a lot of money on quite expensive links, so I don't know if it's the DA of the linking domains or the multiple links making the difference. Anyone has an idea?

Do citations count as backlinks?
Hello, So I may have a simple question- do citations such as yp and manta for an example count as backlinks? So if they do, would this be a natural link so good for seo? or a citation where it may be a backlink, but not very helpful for seo backlink profile? Thank you to all

Backlink question
Hi all. Here's the scenario. There is a company who provide financial services to their online clients. On ALL their clients sites they have a "payments-by-us" style logo with backlink to their homepage domain name. This means they have over 3,000 links from a multitude of non-related websites - with just 3 or 4 anchor text keywords in these backlinks. No surprise they have been hit by Penguin My questions What it the best practice for these type of linking LOGO's. Should they link to a dedicated page, and NOT the homepage? Should they have branded + anchor text, no text, or just branded? or a combination of each Should they even be a link at all as they are coming from such a diverse group of sites? I understand how Penguin penalises for overuse of money word keywords as anchor text. This is something that has definitely happened here (by the bucket load) ... Assume the anchor text is "Green Chips Finance" and that phrase is also overused and a bit "stuffy" in their homepage. Here's my question - could simply lowering the prominence / significance of "Green Chips Finance" on the actual home page, help in reducing the impact of the damage caused by the thousands of backlinks with "Green Chips Finance" as the anchor text? I say this as they have a similar number of back links saying "Red Chips Finance", but there is no mention of "Red Chips Finance" on their homepage other than in the keywords and a couple of standard text mentions (no H1, H2, alt text etc) ... interestingly, "Red Chips Finance" (not the real words) is Google No1 whereas "Green Chips Finance" has been demoted from longtime No1 to about 4. Cheers

Backlinks not showing up
I've been noticing that not all links that a website obtains are showing up as a backlink. For example, the following page has a link to a website (**www.pwgglaw.com)**at the bottom of the page. http://www.ocbar.org/AllNews/NewsView/tabid/66/smid/384/ArticleID/564/Default.aspx I went to opensiteexplorer and typed in pwgglaw.com and it didn't list the ocbar.org as a backlink. Is this right? If not, then how do you force the link from ocbar.org to show up as a backlink?
