Do you need an on page site map as well as an XML Sitemap?
-
Do on page site maps help with SEO or are they more for user experience? We submit and update our XML Sitemaps for the search engines but wondering if /sitemap for users is necessary?
-
In my experience, the html sitemap does not effect SEO as far as indexing the site, assuming you have good XML sitemap and a good link structure. I
I would say that the sole reason to provide an html sitemap is UX, but that is a huge reason to do it. Anything that upgrades your UX, also has the potential to boost your SEO.
Making the full site easy to see and easy to explore will encourage longer site visits and more page views, and that effects your value in the eyes of the search engines.
To expand on what Branden said, specialized sitemaps are a very good idea. Seeing as you were hoping to get rid of a sitemap this may not be what you want to hear but you really should have a sitemap for each type of content you have.
Mobile | Video | News | Images | TV Shows and of course your general web sitemap
Take a moment to learn about each of them as you will want to understand each maps expectations. ie. You should never have anything on a news sitemap that is older than 2 days and Google will reject anything that does not meet it's criteria.
Here is the Google Resource that explains it all.

yes you should use both.
You should also have an xml sitemap for video. I recomend using Wistia if you have a good budget, since they automoatically create video xml.....otherwise use Vimeo Pro, if you are on a budget. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo
And an xml sitemap for your blog (Google News xml sitemap) ... if you create lots of articles and want your articles included in Google's news feed. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-seomoz-gained-1000s-of-visits-from-google-news

Similar pages on a site
Hi I think it was at BrightonSEO where PI DataMetrics were talking about similar pages on a website can cause rankings to drop for your main page. This has got me thinking. if we have a category about jumpers so: example.com/jumpers but then our blog has a category about jumpers, where we write all about jumpers etc which creates a category page example.com/blog/category/jumpers, so these blog category pages have no index put on them to stop them ranking in Google? Thanks in Advance for any tips. Andy

Does my "spam" site affect my other sites on the same IP?
I have a link directory called Liberty Resource Directory. It's the main site on my dedicated IP, all my other sites are Addon domains on top of it. While exploring the new MOZ spam ranking I saw that LRD (Liberty Resource Directory) has a spam score of 9/17 and that Google penalizes 71% of sites with a similar score. Fair enough, thin content, bunch of follow links (there's over 2,000 links by now), no problem. That site isn't for Google, it's for me. Question, does that site (and linking to my own sites on it) negatively affect my other sites on the same IP? If so, by how much? Does a simple noindex fix that potential issues? Bonus: How does one go about going through hundreds of pages with thousands of links, built with raw, plain text HTML to change things to nofollow? =/

Switching site from http to https. Should I do entire site?
Good morning, As many of you have read, Google seems to have confirmed that they will give a small boost to sites with SSL certificates this morning. So my question is, does that mean we have to switch our entire site to https? Even simple information pages and blog posts? Or will we get credit for the https boost as long as the sensitive parts of our site have it? Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

Internal Blog - Embed Categorized RSS Feeds into Site Web Pages
I am thinking about additional ways to repurpose blog posts through out my website. I have a blog - http://www.domainname.com/blog I would like to use the blog categories, which are aligned with the site structure, and create on-page RSS Feeds for my regular web pages. Anything here that might not be good for SEO? Thank you

ECommerce site - Duplicate pages problem.
We have an eCommerce site with multiple products being displayed on a number of pages. We use rel="next" and rel="prev" and have a display ALL which I understand Google should automatically be able to find. Should we also being using a Canonical tag as well to tell google to give authority to the first page or the All Pages. Or was the use of the next and prev rel tags that we currently do adequate. We currently display 20 products per page, we were thinking of increasing this to make fewer pages but they would be better as this which would make some later product pages redundant . If we add 301 redirects on the redundant pages, does anyone know of the sort of impact this might cause to traffic and seo ?. General thoughts if anyone has similar problems welcome

What to include on a sitemap for a huge site?
I have a very large site and I'm not sure what all to include on the sitemap page. We have categories such as items1, items2 and in the items1 category are 100 vendors with their individual vendor pages. Should I link all 100 vendor pages on the sitemap or just the main items1 category?
