E-ccomerce SEO conundrum
-
I work on the marketing for an eccomerce website. And lately we have been having an issue with the "wrong" page ranking and the right page "being nearly unfindable." For example the product bit o honey - there is a brand page, category page and individual product pages. We want the category page to be the top level bit o honey "hub" page and have placed all of the products onto it. We've written a nice description about Bit O Honey on that page and spent time running social campaigns around that page to try and get social activity on page as well. There have even been a few back links from blogs or reviews onto that category page. It also has the highest page authority among all of the bit o honey pages. But for some odd reason it is always the absolute last result among the 3 options when i search? In fact the only time I can even find it is if I type in about 3 sentences worth of text from that page and it find exact match. I'm really pretty confused as to why the highest page authority page with the most content, activity and link profile, would have the worst ranking capability among the three nearly identical pages.

I disagree and would advise against this. First of all, these are not the same pages and so it is an improper use of the rel canonical tag, which means - at best - Google could just choose to ignore this at any time and the problem would still be there.
Second, if he has a link-based penalty (looking at his link profile for that page this is very possible) placing a rel canonical tag on the two ranking pages that points to the penalized/filtered page could cause those two to stop ranking as well, leaving him with no traffic at all for that brand - a bit worse than sending users to the wrong page.
Jonathan,
I had a look a the external links to that page and out of 7 links, according to OSE, 6 of them have that exact anchor text "Bit O Honey" with the other one being "Bit O Honey for Visit here".
One of them is on a list of "great links" for an android app website that is HEAVILY spammed with really bad links, such as "female escort services" in various countries.
Another is on a list of links at the bottom of a totally irrelevant post that is also irrelevant to the blog it's on. The blog is about hotels and travel. The post is about cooking chicken with wine. The link is about "Bit O Honey" candy, and it is found also near links for window blinds and ice cream.
The other links, with the exception of one that is debatable, are all along these same lines in terms of quality. If you were to rel canonical (essentially a redirect as far as search engines are concerned) the other two pages to this one you would be putting those pages at risk too.
My advice is to get rid of these links. If you can't get rid of them, disavow them. Wait a few weeks and if you don't come back into the rankings for that page file a reinclusion request. And of course build more high-quality links to that page if you can.
Last but not least, fire your link builder.

I would start by adding a higher priority for http://www.candygalaxy.com/bit-o-honey/ in your sitemap.
You use an H3 for the tile on http://www.candygalaxy.com/bit-o-honey/ , while http://www.candygalaxy.com/bit-o-honey-bulk/#.UcOrvj4smF4 and http://www.candygalaxy.com/brands/Bit%252dO%252dHoney.html has an H1. I would also change that

Thanks Mark!

OK - if this is the case, to force Google's hand (so to speak), I would canonical these brand pages over to the target pages you want your visitors to land on - this won't remove them from display on the site like a 301 redirect would, but it will point to the search engines that these pages should be shown over the brand pages in the SERPs. That's what I would do to solve your problem.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the responses.
The url's are
http://www.candygalaxy.com/bit-o-honey/ (ideal landing page)
-
Hi Jonathan,
Have you looked at the links to the page you want to rank compared to the links to the other 2 pages? it may be that the other 2 pages just have better quality links to them. If that is the case then get in touch with the webmasters and ask them to change the link.
Alternatively, if you have been building heavily to the page you want to rank, the page may have received a penalty from Google (not accusing you of doing so by the way, just a possibility!). As Mark said, if you can supply us with the URL of the 3 pages then we can have a look into it for you.
-
Hi Jonathan,
Could there be something technical hurting that page? A meta robots block? A robots.txt block? Perhaps overoptimization of the page?
If you can share the URL, that will be helpful to try and provide some ideas for how to fix the situation.
Mark

Are on-site content carousel bad for SEO?
Hi, I didn't find an answer to my question in the Forum. I attached an example of content carousel, this is what I'm talking about. I understand that Google has no problem anymore with tabbed contents and accordeons (collapsible contents). But now I'm wondering about textual carousels. I'm not talking about an image slider, I'm talking about texts. Is text carousel harder to read for Google than plain text or tabs? Of course, i'm not talking about a carousel using Flash. Let's say the code is proper... Thanks for your help. spfra5

Sitemap Size effect SEO
So I've noticed that the sitemap I use has a capacity of 4500 URLs, but my website is much larger. Is it worth paying for a commercial sitemap that encompasses my entire site? I also notice that of the 4500 URLs which have been submitted, only 104 are indexed. Is this normal, if not, why is the index rate so low?

SEO Ultimate’s and Yoast together
We are using SEO Ultimate’s and Yoast together on a Wordpress website, does anyone have negative experience by using this to plugins together? The main result to use this, is because we could remove the /product/ from the slug. We want clean URL’s and not URL’s that have: website.com/product/PRO1 or website.com/product-catagory/CAT2 (standard Wordpress) But we want: website.com/PRO1 or website.com/CAT2 In Yoast is possible to remove the URL /category/, but not the /product/. With SEO Ultimate’s it is possible. So we use them both. SEO Ultimate’s for the removal of the URL, and Yoast for it’s great functions: Sitemap, no index /page2/, no index media etc. etc. But Yoast gives the following note: ‘’WordPress SEO (Yoast) is known to cause conflicts with SEO Ultimate. Please deactivate WordPress SEO if you wish to continue using SEO Ultimate.’’ I was wondering what this could mean for overal SEO performance. And maybe there is a way to remove the URL’s by using other methods > and remove the SEO Ultimate’s plugin.

One-Pager and SEO
We're building a page that is going to feature over 31 people as difference makers in their field. We're unveiling one a day for an entire month. The very early mockup of the page has name, pic, some bio info, and a link to open up a new window with the full bio. I would love to have all of the bio content for all of the people on the page (and indexable), but I'm not sure how to do that while still being able to hide the full bios until they are expanded. Anybody have any tips that are SEO-friendly and/or examples of a page that is built like this and ranks well. Thanks!

Does Quantcast interfered with SEO?
Quantcast (http://www.quantcast.com/), a stats program was removed from my clients website because the former SEO consultant said it interefered with his SEO efforts, claiming the google bots weren't reading it right. I have never heard of that before and my client now wants Quantcast back on their website. Has anyone heard of this problem with Quantcast?

How to structure rel=canonical for a e commerce site
Hello, So I have searched the Q & A , Google, the zen cart forum and at this point I am looking for some one to give a concrete answer on what I should do. There is a lot of different opinions on " rel=canonical" and how to apply it , since there are many other variable in place. I have a zen cart site. I am using the latest 1.3.9 version. The default setting ( seem to me) uses the rel=canonical to point back to the specific link product or category respectively. Most of the time I have two scenarios. 1. Main category ---> Sub category----> Product 2. Main Category----> Product I'll give an example http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards ---main category http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards/acrylic-awards sub category http://www.perfectindesign.com/awards/acrylic-awards/slanted-award product (this example has three sub categories with maybe 12 products in one 4 in the second and 5 in the third) From looking at the source code for each url it the rel=canonical just points back to its own url. I want to avoid competing against my self, for the example above keyword "acrylic awards" so should the use of the re=canonical be changes site wide to have products point back to sub categories when they exist and have products point back to main categories when no sub categories exist? I am very new to seo, specifically eCommerce seo. If you have experience and have done this to a site you manage for a client or your own please advise how to proceed. Also if I'm missing some thing that will give me a better understanding of the bigger seo picture that would be great. Thanks, Yevgeny

Site forwarding - seo friendly or not?
Recently i decided to change my domain name - and although i have written several useful and working .htacess files with 301 redirects, this one became more complicated by the fact that I went through TWO domain name changes, before settling on the second one. Having seen some issues with the browser not being able to interpret correctly the .htaccess file, i temporarily suspended the .htaccess file, and opted instead for site forwarding. I don't know the mechanics behind site forwarding, or whether it is seo friendly or just a method for ip addressing, a sort of pseudo domain name server record change.
Technical SEO | | highersourcesites
I let it lie for a few weeks, until the dust settled, and yesterday put back the basic .htaccess file, with a 301 redirect, which directs the original domain name to be forwarded to the new one ( also it has a conditional in place to solve canonical issues). It works fine. But right now i am not seeing the link juice, the domain age, the domain page rank that it has. It has gone to zero, when it used to be three, sometimes four. I also made the change of address using webmaster tools. How long ( forever?) will it take to see my old page rank come back, even if it loses 10% from the change? And does site forwarding help or hinder seo ranking?0 -
Does changing nameservers negatively impact SEO?
Had to redirect the nameservers to the hosting account in order for the domain email addresses to work. Since then, search results have dropped from the first page to second and much lower with the same keywords. Does that make sense? Another change was redirecting approx 10 parked domains to the main site, was that a mistake?
