Using Subdomains to Avoid Sitewide Penalties?
-
If I'm using a subdomain on my website, for instance news.mywebsite.com, and it gets penalized by Panda (or whatever animal update), would that affect the main domain and/or other subdomains?
-
It depends, in part, on whether what you're seeing is a manual penalty or an algorithmic update that is causing your site to rank lower.
Often times with Penguin updates, what looks like a penalty is actually just that a lot of the links pointing to a site have been devalued and are no longer passing juice. This is definitely something that can affect your whole domain, if there are enough inbound links to enough different pages on your site that have all been devalued. Subdomains won't be immune to this effect. However, as Michael points out below, losses from Penguin are usually more page/keyword specific, so you won't necessarily see your whole domain/subdomains hit.
With a manual penalty, whether or not the subdomain is hit depends on whether or not it shares the low quality signals that got the main domain hit. I certainly wouldn't recommend isolating black-hat practices on a subdomain, however; a penalty on a subdomain CAN affect other subdomains and the main domain, but it doesn't always do so. It's something to keep an eye on.

Panda is often a sitewide penalty, Penguin is usually isolated e.g. specific keywords, pages etc.
Take a look at this article, should give you some better insight into the updates and how they can affect your site/in what capacity they affect sites.

What tools or tactics do you use to identify which ranking factors Google is weighting for your industry or keyword?
Google ranking factors are increasingly more complex and less universal. Google is emphasizing different ranking factors for different scenarios. What tools are available that can help identify which ranking factors Google may be weighting for a given query or industry? For example, are there any tools that provide correlative analysis of Google's rankings for a given keyword?

Updating Old Content at Scale - Any Danger from a Google Penalty/Spam Perspective?
We've read a lot about the power of updating old content (making it more relevant for today, finding other ways to add value to it) and republishing (Here I mean changing the publish date from the original publish date to today's date - not publishing on other sites). I'm wondering if there is any danger of doing this at scale (designating a few months out of the year where we don't publish brand-new content but instead focus on taking our old blog posts, updating them, and changing the publish date - ~15 posts/month). We have a huge archive of old posts we believe we can add value to and publish anew to benefit our community/organic traffic visitors. It seems like we could add a lot of value to readers by doing this, but I'm a little worried this might somehow be seen by Google as manipulative/spammy/something that could otherwise get us in trouble. Does anyone have experience doing this or have thoughts on whether this might somehow be dangerous to do? Thanks Moz community!

Which speed test to use?
Hi so I have a very easy question I think. I am too new to seo stuff to know better, but which speed test site is the best? I have a construction website. My issue is I am getting mixed results. Pingdom is showing <dl> <dt>Load time</dt> <dd>1.18s</dd> </dl> <dl> <dt>Requests</dt> <dd>22</dd> </dl> <dl class="last"> <dt>Perf. grade</dt> <dd>94/100</dd> <dd>Gt metrix is showing 98/87 with a 2.13 load time.</dd> <dd>And it varies from when I do it.</dd> <dd>So which do I go off of?</dd> <dd>With pingdom, I feel pretty good.</dd> <dd>With gtmetrix I feel like maybe I could improve.</dd> <dd>I ask because I have been looking into a cdn, but because its like learning a foreign language to me, I do not want to go there unless I have too.</dd> <dd>Thank you for any advice on which speed test to view as most accurate</dd> <dd>Chris</dd> </dl>

Can Sitemap Be Used to Manage Canonical URLs?
We have a duplicate content challenge that likely has contributed to us loosing SERPs especially for generic keywords such as "audiobook," "audiobooks," "audio book," and "audio books." Our duplicate content is on two levels. 1. The first level is at our web store, www.audiobooksonline.com. Audiobooks are sometimes published in abridged, unabridged, on compact discs, on MP3 CD by the same publisher. In this case we use the publisher description of the story for each "flavor" = duplicate content. Can we use our sitemap to identify only one "flavor" so that a spider doesn't index the others? 2. The second level is that most online merchants of the same publisher's audio book use the same description of the story = lots of duplicate content on the Web. In that we have 11,000+ audio book titles offered at our Web store, I expect Google sees us as having lots of duplicated (on the Web) content and devalues our site. Some of our competitors who rank very high for our generic keywords use the same publisher's description. Any suggestions on how we could make our individual audio book title pages unique will be greatly appreciated.

Correct use of Canonical link vs 301 redirect
Hi All, Seeking yet more advice. SEOMOZ tools have told me I have duplicate content on one of my sites and I am keen to clean this up. I am not to familiar with the following so thought I would ask. The duplicate content is shown on : www.mysite.com www.mysite.com/index.html Obviously I only see index.html when I check the code so what is the best method of resolving the duplicate content, Canonical or 301? Can you give me an example 🙂 Thanks all

Hi, Are you still using XML sitemaps today? If yes, does it bring any benefit to your website like faster indexing of webpages or better rankings? Are you using special features like video sitemaps or sitemap index files? Best regards, Tobias
