Penguin 2.0 has hit business
-
Howdy,
I represent a UK based workwear company called myworkwear.co.uk and our rankings have fallen following Penguin 2.0. We are a relatively small company compared to many competitors and have noticed the arrival of large companies in the serps. Many are not even in the workwear sector and pretty irrelevant which is annoying. We have not received any correspondence from Google, but our fall from grace particularly for the word workwear has been big.Do you think our link profile is an issue?

Is it worth emailing Google? We have attempted to remove bad links, is it worth using disavow? My feelings are we should:
1. Email Google via Disavow tool about the links we have already tried to remove with proof of attempt.Go through link profile with fine tooth comb and contact an even wider range of webmasters for link removal. Then email Google via disavow tool (best to try removal via email to websites first).2. Begin to build new content and links, even guest blogging is now coming under scrutiny from Google – There really is no bluffing Google anymore.3. Build site conversion.4. Develop a competition theme (10 years old anniversary) combined with say MyWorkHero, etc. Use this for social networking.5. Increase social networking, but is this experts are predicting this is the next kick up for seo.6. Having improved conversion, trial adwords.7. Continue to develop the site in a structured, non manipulative manner. – Look at it as a good site is a successful site in the eyes of Google and the rewards will follow.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the reply your time is much appreciated. I am aware of the edu.cn domains with drug products and emailed the relevant webmasters 6 months ago with no look as the site was hacked about 5 years ago. So I will now disavow them. Is it worth using disavow on other bad links before I attempt to get them removed? or does Google frown on this?
I agree about the term 'workwear' as over the years this built the rankings, but now the seo worm has turned. I have started to use prlog.org for press releases.Do you feel this is okay?
Once again, thanks for your help, it is important to provide independent opinions to clients.

Hi there
First of all, I'm really sorry to hear you've been affected by the update.
As Penguin was an algorithmic penalty, there will be no benefit in emailing Google directly or filing a reconsideration request, as the penalty was not manual. However, filing a disavow file would be worthwhile if you believe that your site's link profile is littered with spam.
Now, I don't mean to alarm you but I can see some very worrying links in your profile. You have a number of links from .edu.cn domains that look to be targeting pills and health items. In all honesty, at first glance it looks as though the site has been hacked - are you aware of this?
Having checked the site in the safe browsing tool, it doesn't look as though Google has detected this as hacked. Nevertheless, those links will be doing some pretty serious harm to your site and should be disavowed straight away. In addition, there does look to be a number of links with the keyword "workwear" that look quite artificial - as in, they only look to pass SEO value rather than user value. Those kind of links (which it looks like you've already identified) could be contributing to your penguin penalty.
It's worth noting that disavowing these links will likely have no effect until the algorithm refreshes, which may take a month or two. In the mean time, you should focus on replacing those links with quality links and looking to drive traffic to your site by other means. Also, in case you have been hacked, Google has released a great guide on what you should do next.
And I have to say, it looks as though you've got a great plan to do this. Steps 2 through 7 all look like great inbound marketing tactics (I particularly like 4) which in turn should help you earn high authority links.
I'd have a deep look at your link profile and also check your site security, but your recovery plan looks really solid and I hope it's not long until you get back on your feet.

Is it possible to reverse a G algo update (Penguin/Panda)?
...if yes, how? Can you share resources / blogs / etc... I want to reverse my site's rankings. Here's the gist of it: I recently purchased a website that has 600+ pieces of aged content on it. Domain was ranking great about 10 years ago (1M uniques a year) It apparently got hit by a G algo update in 2012/2013 (Penguin and Panda?), because the rankings have tanked (10 hits a day) In the past two years, the previosu owner published about 100+ off-topic blog posts and it appears been using the site as a PBN. The UX sucks and there's a ton of 404s. (NOTE: I am in the process of removing that content and have cleaned up the 404s). Domain stats: 20+ years old (1998) and DA 32, linking domains 850+, inbound links of 16k+ What I've done: disavow (550 domains), fix all the 404s What I'm doing / about to do: remove spammy content write new/fresh on-topic content update the site UX start a backlink building campaign My questions: is it common to bounce back from a G algo update? is it hard / am I over my head / am I a sucker trying to get the site back alive? are there articles about bouncing back that you can share so I can learn more about this process? Or agencies / consultants, etc that you recommend? what other recommendations / suggestions do you have that would help reverse this 8-year-old penalty?

Google My Business app search report
What is the deal with the search reports in the Google My Business app? I downloaded this app so prospective customers could message my business, and when I look at the search reports on the app, the results seem nonsensical. According to google analytics my business receives pretty steady traffic every day. Why does the report say that I receive zero visitors one day and 400 the next? (See the screenshot below) 4yLRCHG

Blog Analytics broke for two weeks. How do I account for these hits in my monthly report?
The Analytics on my blog broke for about two weeks before I realized it. I need to come up with some estimated numbers for total pageviews, referrals, direct hits, etc to add to my monthly SEM report. I took the average of the past four 2 week periods to come up with the number of hits. Should I just add this number to the total hits on my site? Or are these hits being counted twice if they went on to the main site? http://www.howlatthemoon.com

GA not recording visitors PART 2
Further to my question yesterday where all data for Wednesday 31st July 2013 was not showing - the data did reappear yesterday afternoon. But today, all data for yesterday seems odd - across all my projects visitor numbers appear to be around 40% down on the norm. Sales were normal, so I wonder if this is another glitch - anyone else seeing strange stats in GA for yesterday?

Strange traffic - panda, penguin? Screenshots attached.
Hi, I'm unsure if I've been hit by penguin/panda. I've attached screenshots below. The first one is April 1st to today. The second is all of April and the 3rd is 1st June to today. The site was offline at the beginning of July which explains no traffic. My traffic took a dip though on April 6th which as I understand it wasn't a panda/penguin roll out? I then got hardly any traffic for May to mid June. Then the site was offline due to a server problem but when it came back on traffic was the highest it has ever been. Today however I am getting zero search engine traffic? I can't figure out what's going on. Can anyone shed any light on the issue? DTJXE DTJXE Dpj21 qHTpj

Impression Drops Starting from June 2
In Webmaster Tools and the Linked Data in GA, we got huge bumps for some of our keywords this last week and subsequently were dropped from the face of the earth for other words were were tracking but not SEOing for. Basically for anything higher than 3rd page SERP, 30+ we were removed from Google search and we're no longer showing rankings for any of these words. Is this a new change as part of Penguin? I wonder b/c a lot of those words that were in the 60-100 in SERP were, as I mentioned, not focus SEO words but the backlinks were probably specific keywords, as we only have say 6 links and 4 are the same anchor text, this would put those words in the 60% over optimization penalty.

Glitch or Penguin?
Hi all, Our queries in GA have bombed, strangely since Penguin. We've gone from 12,000 impressions to none. Traffic is ok, we've not seen a decline. IS this a GA glitch or should we panic? Thanks
