Photo Gallery with Duplicate Content and Titles
-
I have a photo Gallery that is coming up as a lot of Duplicate Titles and Page Content and fixing each photo just isn't possible right now. Should I just block the search engines from indexing them to resolve the errors?
-
I have to disagree a bit regarding the risks. In general, the main problem is dilution - you're spreading the authority across more pages (as David said). Unfortunately, though, there are worse possibilities - including filtering (Google won't let certain pages rank, or lets the wrong page rank) and even Panda-scale penalties that could impact the broader site. The risks of duplicate content are a lot higher than they were even 3-4 years ago.
It depends a lot on scope, and there's always a trade-off. If you use rel=canonical or NOINDEX the photo pages, then they won't be eligible for ranking. On the other hand, if you spin out hundreds of photo pages, it could negatively impact your overall ranking ability, even for other pages.
If you're talking about a few photo pages here and there, I wouldn't worry about it. If your site has a 500-page index, and 400 of those are photo gallery pages (or something equally extreme), then I'd definitely be proactive. In most cases, I think using rel=canonical from the individual photos back up to the gallery is a solid solution, but it does depend a bit on the site.

Thanks for the great response! I'll leave it as is as you suggested.

One option you may consider so that at least you can have one page found from the gallery is to add a rel=conanical tag to their headers designating one of them as the page to index.
If you are willing to block all of the pages then your better option is to leave them as is. Duplicate content on your site does not black flag you at Google or make non duplicate pages rank worse.
All it does is this:
Content page has an example Authority of 50. If it is the sole page with that content then all 50 points go to that page.
However, if you have 5 pages with that content, then each of them shares the seo goodness and have 10 points each.
Now when the SERP is built your 50 points that would have maybe got a first page rank is only valued at 10 so it falls much further back. Still higher than noindex tagging will get though.
Hope that helps.

Duplicate Title Tags/Meta Tags for Website with Multiple Locations
I currently have an insurance website that has over 40 offices in Ontario. The site also provides online quoting.
On-Page Optimization | | MainstreamMktg
In some of our programming, we have implemented variables in the URLS that will allow the quotes to go to the specific city offices - the issue I am having is that the quote in itself is the same quote form (same title, same meta) because it's technically one page on the website. We did it this way to avoid having to update 40 forms if a field on the form were to change. Is there any way I can relieve my site of this duplicate title tag/meta tag issue? Any insight would be really appreciated - thanks so much!0 -

E.G - There might be 5 pages in say a Media Release section of the website. And each URL says page 1, 2 etc etc. However, its still coming up as duplicate. How can this be fixed so Moz knows its actually different content?0 -
Issue: Duplicate Page Content
For duplicate page content, how different should pages be? For example, I have seven locations and on each location page, we offer a discount. The discounts are the same currently and open into a pop-up window. So it looks something like this: mysite.com/locationA/dicount mysite.com/locationB/discount mysite.com/locationX/discount The pages are identical. Should I change the verbiage on each page or let it be? I noticed that our organic search rankings have dropped since our site upgrade and this is one item that SEOMOZ has noted. Thanks! DHO

Meta descriptions better empty or with duplicate content?
I am working with a yahoo store. Somehow all of the meta description fields were filled in with random content from throughout the store. For example, a black cabinet knob product page might have in its description field the specifications for a drawer slide. I don't know how this happened. We have had a programmer auto populate certain fields to get them ready for product feeds, etc. It's possible they screwed something up during that, this was a long time ago. My question. Regardless of how it happened. Is it better for me to have them wipe these fields entirely clean? Or, is it better for me to have them populate the fields with a duplicate of our text from the body. The site has about 6,500 pages so I have and will make custom descriptions for the more important pages after this process, but the workload to do them all is too much. So, nothing or duplicate content for the pages that likely won't receive personal attention?

Duplicate content
Hi everybody, I am thrown into a SEO project of a website with a duplicate content problem because of a version with and a version without 'www' . The strange thing is that the version with www. has got more than 10 times more Backlings but is not in the organic index. Here are my questions: 1. Should I go on using the "without www" version as the primary resource? 2. Which kind of redirect is best for passing most of the link juice? Thanks in advance, Sebastian

Duplicate Content Warning
Hi Mozers, I have a question about the duplicate content warnings I am recieving for some of my pages. I noticed that the below pattern of URLs are being flagged as duplicate content. I understand that these are seen as two different pages but I would like to know if this has an negative impact on my SEO? Why is this happening? How do I stop it from happening? http://www.XXXX.com/product1234.html?sef_rewrite=1 http://www.XXXX.com/product1234.html Thanks in advance!

Are duplicate titles an issue for pages I don't need ranking for?
A client has a load of duplicate page titles on their site. However, to cut a long story short, most of these pages are pointless and therefore we don't need ranking for them. As such, I'm not concerned whether any of the pages with duplicate content on them are ranked or not..... unless having duplicate page titles / content on these pages could mean that other pages on the site, like the homepage, don't rank as high because of this. Do I need to worry about duplicate titles on these pages, or can I ignore duplicate content on pages that I don't want to be ranked? Hope that makes sense!
