Why is a sub page ranking over home page?
-
Hey guys!
I was wondering whether any of you Mozzers out there could shed some light on this query for me.
Currently, one of our clients is ranking (on the second page, at least) for one of their target keywords.
However, it's not the home page that is ranking - it is a sub page. I guess you could say both are targeted to rank for the keyword in question but the home page has a considerable more PA (+10) and has a lot more incoming links so it's a little bit baffling as to why the sub page has been given an advantage.
Does anyone know why this may be?
Also, on a secondary note, should I continue to build links to the home page or target this particular sub page to have a better chance of ranking higher for the keyword?
Any advice on this welcome!
Cheers!

Another good answer, Lynn. Thanks a lot. I'll be sure to take on board the advice you've passed on!

I don't think changing the .com links will move the needle, there are only a couple of them and they are being 301 redirected so not going to make that much of a difference I wouldn't think.
If you are going to shift that phrase over to the internal page then in the first instance I would focus on trying to get some more content on that page to reinforce that this is the main page about kitchens. You could add some content describing how/why each of the sub categories (worktops, doors etc) are relevant to the DIYer for example. You could use your internal blog for informational type posts that can further reinforce the main category page.
I guess what I am saying is that since the top sites for that term seem to be mainly root domains and partial/full EMDs to boot, then your content is going to need to stand out a bit for you to realistically get onto the first page. So, I would concentrate on that before I jumped into more external link building which has the potential to look slightly unnatural given the nature of the content as it is now.
Might be worth focusing on some social signals before external links also, which could sync with your internal blogging efforts, try encouraging clients to leave reviews on relevant sites, that kind of thing. Once the content is there and the social signals are supporting it then external links will seem more credible and probably be more effective.
Hope that helps!

Hey Lynn, great answer.
The .com links were built initially when the site was intended to be a .com. Would you recommend trying to change these links to .co.uk - would it be beneficial?
I definitely take your point that, from a consumer's point of view, it's probably more beneficial for the /kitchens/ page to be ranking. With that in mind, do you think it would be wise to concentrate link building efforts towards that sub-page?

Hi Mathew,
Well a couple of things stand out at first glance (not necessarily in order of importance)
1. You have a handful of exact / partial match links to both the home and secondary page, so potentially confusing to the search engines which one is best suited to show.
2. Some of the relevant links to the homepage are going to a .com version of the site which is being redirected to the .co.uk
3. All your internal linking is indicating that the internal page is the most relevant for this phrase.
All things considered I think your content/internal linking is the main issue. The internal page is much more kitchen focused (texts, products etc) while the homepage to me seems more focused on flooring. That in combination with the external links into the internal page and perhaps some lost value in the 301 redirects to the homepage is likely why the internal page is ranking for the term.
Beyond the technical side of it, as a user searching for diy kitchens I would prefer to see the internal page anyway, it is more immediately relevant so maybe a rethink of which phrases you are trying to focus for on each page is worthwhile and focusing the diy kitchen phrases on the internal page makes sense in this case.
My two cents!

Hi Mathew,
Care to share the site/keyword in question? Pretty tough to give an idea without seeing the pages, there could be a number of factors at play.
-
Can anyone else provide insight into this?
-
Hi Matthew,
With e-commerce sites the content (if not there) is greatly obtained by the text from the product so the product titles , the product descriptions, and the alt-text from the product images.
-
Oh, and it may be worth mentioning that for another competitive keyword, we have a second page ranking and that one is the home page.
-
Hey Lynn, thanks for your detailed response.
The links we've built have all been carefully sourced and managed in a way that there should be some good variation in anchor phrases while steering well clear of underhand techniques like mass paid directories.
-
Never link to the home page? Can't say I've heard that one before. Why would the ranking be suppressed?
-
Hey Ard. The site in question is an ecommerce one so it has very little text on both of the pages. In fact, it has more on the home page.
-
Hi Matthews,
It could be a cause of better relevant and quality content on the keyword on the subpage than on homepage.
-
Hi Mathew,
Just this week I saw something very similar, a newish site that had unfortunately gone the route of mass paid directory links with loads of exact match text variations (not saying this is your case!). From one day to the next I saw the second page ranking they had for their homepage and main keyword get switched out with another page on their site. I got the impression this was a specific page+specific keyword type of penalty or suppression. If the site in question has been a bit over enthusiastic on the exact match linking game then it is something I would keep an eye out for. I think that is what Irving is implying also....

never link to the homepage, you can't 404 a homepage if the page gets ranking supressed. This is what might have happened to you already.

What happens if we remove all the links to internal pages from our homepage?
Hi Moz community, We wanna give a try by removing all the links from homepage to internal pages and keep just a free trial button. Will this impact our SEO anyway? We have nearly 15 important internal pages at 2nd and 3rd hierarchy level. They may drop in rankings but we want to risk for few days to understand how it works. Your opinion please! Thanks

Ranking drop after sub domain to sub directory migration. Usual?
Hi all, We had our help articles on sub-domain help.website.com. Then we moved it to sub directory website.com/help/. We expected ranking improvement of website.com as there is a wide saying of benefiting from sub domain to sub directory migration. We have noticed that ranking improvement of new sub directory pages (website.com/help/) but not for any main website pages (website.com). I presume that link juice from main website has benefited new sub directory pages but main website lost ranking due to the page rank dilution. Do you agree? Any ideas? Thanks

On-Page Markup: Still a Worthwhile Practice?
So I have a question for the community that hopefully someone can help me with. Previously, whenever I created/worked on a website, when I would create or edit the content, I would bold the keywords, italicize certain items, add internal/external links and generally mark-up the content. More recently, however, I've noticed that both my client and many of their leading competitors have abandoned this practice. Now, it appears that all the text appears as plain text, there are rarely bold or italicized items and there does not seem to be as much emphasis on inserting internal/external links. While I understand the ladder to still be an effective/holistic approach to SEO, I'm wondering why the former (the bold, italicized, text variation) has gone by the wayside. So with that, is adding bold/italicized text still a worthwhile SEO technique and is it something I should continue applying to sites I work on? Please advise.

Recent Rank drop after Penguin 2.1?
Recently, a lot of pages from our website have moved from page one or ranking number one, to page ten or something. We got a manual penalty message from Google Team, we removed a lot of unnatural links pointing to our pages and disavowed the rest. This got the penalty removed and we got a message from Google confirming the same. Before the manual penalty we were getting about 140,000 visits per day, after the penalty about 80,000. However, after Hummingbird or Penguin 2.1 all our ranks have vanished. We are nowhere in Google for our primary keywords and we getting like 40,000 visits per day. Most are direct or from sources other than Google. We had another look at the links we disavowed, a list of about 11000 domains, we found about 3000 domains to be good. We fixed the disavow file about one week back, but no changes in traffic since. We checking the domains again to see if we have missed more good domains in there; yes, we have. There are still a very few good domains in there. But we are not touching the disavow list; waiting to see the change for the last submitted. We have a dedicated user base, good liking on Facebook, all the stats in Analytics speak good, about 40% repeat visits about 30% direct. About 3000 people search for the site using our brand name as reported in Analytics. I doubt the on-page optimization, the pages could be over-optimized. But the on-page factors for other pages ranking for the keywords are similar. The keyword density is similar, so are the usage of headings and stuff. We have not made any recent changes to these on-page patterns. Our team is not able to figure out what could have gone wrong.

Ranking factors for national and local
What SEO impact factors am I missing if I am ranked 1st on Google for a keyword, but not ranked local search? The keyword being setup like {"company industry" "location" }. Its ranked 4th when searched on google and the location is specific to the location in the keyword. I've tried to varify that all of my citations are correct and identical. When I compare my sites Domain Authority and links to its competitors, I should be dominating that search. If you guys have any incite it would be greatly appreciated. MADD DOGG

Home page replaced by subpage in google SERP (good or bad)
SInce Panda, We have seen our home page drop from #2 in google.ie serp to page 3 but it has been replaced in the same position @#2 by our relevent sub page for the keyword that we ranked#2 for. Is this a good or bad thing from and seo point of view and is it better to have deep pages show in serp rather than the homepage of a site and what is the best line of action from here in relation to seo. Is it best to work on subpage or home page for that keyword and should link building for that phrase be directed towards the subpage or the homepage as the subpage is obviously more relevent in googles eyes for the search term. It is clear that all areas of the site should be looked at in relation to link building and deep links etc but now that google is obviously looking at relevancy very closely should all campaigns be sectioned into relevent content managed sections and the site likewise and treated on an individual basis. Any help that you may have would be very welcome. Paul

Is there a way to pull historical rankings for a keyword?
I have someone who's come to me and said that they have lost all of their organic keyword rankings. They did launch a site redesign a few months back so that could be a reason as to why. But after looking at the site, link profile, etc. It doesn't look like they could have been ranking for the terms they say they were. They have never implemented any SEO on their sites btw. I did not build this site and have not done any SEO, they are coming to me to solve the problem. I did notice in SEM rush that a couple months ago they were ranking organically for more terms (20 in July vs. 5 now), so they did lose some. Is there any way to see what terms they WERE ranking for?
