De-indexed homepage in Google - very confusing.
-
A website I provide content for has just suffered a de-indexed homepage in Google (not in any of the other search engines) - all the other pages remained indexed as usual. Client asked me what might be the problem and I just couldn't figure it out - no linkbuilding has ever been carried out so clean backlink profile, etc. I just resubmitted it and it's back in its usual place, and has maintained the rankings (and PR) it had before it disappeared a few days ago. I checked WMT and no warnings or issues there. Any idea why this might've happened?
-
Having disappeared, the homepage appeared immediately when I resubmitted it, then fell back in SERPs a little and is now achieving better SERPs than when it disappeared. I can't see any probs with the code / sitemap or anything. All in all rather confusing but (thankfully) resolved in a couple of minutes. Thanks for your brilliant feedback Thomas and for your help as well Marcus. Thanks to you, I'm well prepared should this problem hit one of my clients again

Hi Marcus,
That is great news to have. Not that it's great that it happened but Great that other people have seen this happen and recovered. Considering all the things going on right now I would say at a glitch is entirely possible.
I know Google makes a change to the page rank algorithm approximately every 3 months and weird things happen. Plus if you count the way people actually charge their page rank it's normally with some bar that's out of date.
Here, it is what I found it appears to be extremely common with no issues that would actually affect you like your SERPS rank for certain keywords.

the 3rd link down just like Marcus explained has a very similar story. I think very valuable contribution thank you Marcus your comment inspired me to look for more data.
All the best I hope this is of help,

Hey, Thomas's response really nails most of the obvious causes here but as a simple n=1 oppinion this happened to one of my clients last week. Homepage disappeared for around 48 hours. No problems I could detect, but it was not indexed. Weird, but just as I was scratching my chin it popped back up.
Check the obvious things, make sure there are no problems and then leave it for 48 hours and see if it pops back up.
Not hugely scientific but after such a big update we often see little aberrations and this could be one of those if everything else is as it should be.
Hope that helps

I have heard a lot of people complain about page rank loss during the recent Penguin 2 update. Unfortunately that could be just Google's way of changing their own page rank. if the page itself is unaffected rank wise I would not be worried. The other thing I would what your client know is those page rank toolbars are notoriously wrong so you might want to check it through a more powerful or trustworthy source. I don't really put a lot of stock in Google's page rank because they frankly have told us not to and I would look more at the Moz rank
if there is a problem with the robots.txt it would be very possible Google is slow to reinstate it after what happened.
I would still check site with everything below however this is something I've heard of already from 2 other people. So it could just be a glitch or Google has made changes to its page rank algorithm.
It sounds to me as if there's either a problem with the robots.txt
or it's a simple matter of the plug-in or whatever's being used saying not to index or follow the homepage
if you could use this tool and simply type in the URL plus robots.txt
like this below
http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/seo-tools/robots-txt-generator/
then post the results or send me a private message with them included.
In addition go on the homepage and search with either control F if you're a PC user or command F if you are Mac user for nofollow and noindex
if you find either one of these
they will look like this
http://www.robotstxt.org/meta.html
<title>...</title> you can use the
http://www.internetmarketingninjas.com/seo-tools/robots-txt-generator/
to change them to make sure they're not on the page. You do not need them there as Google default indexes and follows every page unless you tell it not to. The other thing you have to look for use of the X tag as well it can do the same thing as shown below
Example uses of the X-Robots-Tag
If you want to prevent search engines from showing files you’ve generated with PHP, add the following in the header file:
|
1
|header("X-Robots-Tag: noindex", true);
|This would not prevent search engines from following the links on those pages, if you want to do that, do the following:
|
1
|header("X-Robots-Tag: noindex, nofollow", true);
|But doing it in PHP is probably not the easiest use for this kind of thing. I myself greatly prefer setting headers in Apache, when possible. Consider, for instance, preventing search engines from caching / showing a preview for all .doc files on your domain, you would only have to do the following:
take a look at this to know if you are pages being affected by one or the other.

I hope this is of help,
let me know if I can be of more assistance.

International Homepage Advice
Hello, colleagues! We have a conundrum. A client website has a good subdirectory strategy for localized/translated content for its various international markets, but nothing currently "lives" at the root. In my mind, this presents a challenge to search engines (note that we have had some trouble getting proper visibility overall, which is why I'm asking this question). I'm looking for any links or just plain old good advice on why it's important to have a global homepage. Should that global homepage be in English? Most enterprise sites I've worked with do have a homepage that's in English, with the ability to select a country from a drop down in a nav across the site. Any advice, best practices, etc. about why a global homepage is important and what language it could/should be in would be really helpful. Hreflang tags would make sense, I guess, but each country has slightly different offerings so I'm not sure that it makes complete sense. In other words, one country's homepage may have completely different content than another's. Thank you!

Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt: Need to bother?
Hi, We have intentionally blocked some of the website files which were indexed for years. Now we receive a message "Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt" in GSC. We can ignore as per my knowledge? Are any actions required about this? We thought of blocking them with meta tags but these are PDF files. Thanks

Google Algorithm change this month - theories ?
Hi Moz fans! If you've not had the chance to check out moz cast go check it out it seems Google has been busy and so much so it broke Moz cast. There has been some discussion on seo round table about the changes and something seems to be going on. I wanted to find out how you guys are all finding it have you had a change in rankings? Any theories on what you think Google is up to? Personally I've seen rather a few of my sites go up in the rankings last week or so. As always look forward to hearing your thoughts and feelings on it Moz.

Test site is live on Google but it duplicates existing site...
Hello - my developer has just put a test site up on Google which duplicates my existing site (main url is www.mydomain.com and he's put it up on www.mydomain.com/test/ "...I’ve added /test/ to the disallowed urls in robots.txt" is how he put it. So all the site URLs are content replicated and live on Google with /test/ added so he can block them in robots. In all other ways the test site duplicates all content, etc (until I get around to making some tweaks next week, that is). Is this a bad idea or should I be OK. Last thing I want is a duplicate content or some other Google penalty just because I'm tweaking an existing website! Thanks in advance, Luke

Is there a direct correlation between google places and organic listing ?
Basically, I have examined several examples that the sites which are included in Google places are not listed in organic results in page 1. For example, If my site is listed in google places. is it going to affect my ranking for the same keyword?.

Stop google indexing CDN pages
Just when I thought I'd seen it all, google hits me with another nasty surprise! I have a CDN to deliver images, js and css to visitors around the world. I have no links to static HTML pages on the site, as far as I can tell, but someone else may have - perhaps a scraper site? Google has decided the static pages they were able to access through the CDN have more value than my real pages, and they seem to be slowly replacing my pages in the index with the static pages. Anyone got an idea on how to stop that? Obviously, I have no access to the static area, because it is in the CDN, so there is no way I know of that I can have a robots file there. It could be that I have to trash the CDN and change it to only allow the image directory, and maybe set up a separate CDN subdomain for content that only contains the JS and CSS? Have you seen this problem and beat it? (Of course the next thing is Roger might look at google results and start crawling them too, LOL) P.S. The reason I am not asking this question in the google forums is that others have asked this question many times and nobody at google has bothered to answer, over the past 5 months, and nobody who did try, gave an answer that was remotely useful. So I'm not really hopeful of anyone here having a solution either, but I expect this is my best bet because you guys are always willing to try.

Indexing well in Google but not in Yahoo/Bing - WHY?
Been using SEOMOZ now to analyze and crawl a client's website for a while now. One thing I've noticed is that our client's website is indexing well with Google. a few thousand pages are being indexed. However, when it comes to Yahoo and Bing, the website only has a 100+ pages indexed. We've submitted updated sitemaps to Google and Bing and have been fixing any broken links, and on-page SEO. Content is also good. Here's the website: www.imaginet.com.ph Any suggestions/recommendations are highly appreciated. Thank you!
