200 for Site Visitors, 404 for Google (but possibly 200?)
-
A 2nd question we have about another site we're working with...
Currently if a visitor to their site accesses a page that has no content in a section, it shows a message saying that there is no information currently available and the page shows 200 for the user, but shows 404 for Google.
They are asking us if it would be better to change the pages to 200's for Google and what impact that might have considering there would be different pages displaying the same 'no information here' message.
-
Thanks Mike - yes, I believe this only happens on results pages on their site.
Good point on the cloaking - good thing to think about as well.
Sounds like disallowing in robots.txt is the 1st thing they should do, then they can remove the pages resulting in 404s which they can then manage through GWM.

Ah... its a search results page. Generally speaking, best practices for internal search results pages is to disallow them in robots.txt as Google usually considers is disfavorable to have search results appear in search results. What I'd really worry about here is that it could accidentally be viewed as cloaking since you're serving Google something completely different than you're serving human visitors. (Though a manual reviewer should see that you aren't doing it with malicious intent)
Does this only happen on search results pages?

If it were me, I would serve up the 200, but any time a "no-content" page was served up under a different URL I would use a canonical tag to point Google to a standard /no-content page.
This is an easy way to tell google "hey these are all really the same page, and serve the same purpose as /no-content. Please treat them as one page in your index, and do not count them as spammy variants."
-
Thank you Mike. I was leaning towards your hypothesis and it's good to see you're thinking the same thing.
Here is an example page with information from one of their site developers - hoping this might help as it appears it is not a custom 404 page.
If you disable javascript and set your USER_AGENT to googlebot you will get a 404.
http://bit.ly/1aoroMuAny other insight you have would be most appreciated - thx!

Have you checked the HTTP header status code shown to users and are you sure that its not just a custom 404 page? Could you give a specific URL as an example?
If the page doesn't exist and only offers a small amount of info like that then making it a 200 across the site when Googlebot sees it would cause Google to view it likely as duplicate thin content or a Soft 404. So a real 404, if it is in fact a 404, is the correct thing to do.

Best way to do site seals for clients to have on their sites
I am about to help release a product which also gives people a site seal for them to place on their website. Just like the geotrust, comodo, symantec, rapidssl and other web security providers do.

I have notices all these siteseals by these companies never have nofollow on their seals that link back to their websites. So i am wondering what is the best way to do this. Should i have a nofollow on the site seal that links back to domain or is it safe to not have the nofollow.
It wont be doing any keyword stuffing or anything, it will probly just have our domain in the link and that is all. The problem is too, we wont have any control of where customers place these site seals. From experience i would say they will mostly likely always be placed in the footer on every page of the clients website. I would like to hear any and all thoughts on this. As i can't get a proper answer anywhere i have asked.0 -
Google de-indexed a page on my site
I have a site which is around 9 months old. For most search terms we rank fine (including top 3 rankings for competitive terms). Recently one of our pages has been fluctuating wildly in the rankings and has now disappeared altogether from the rankings for over 1 week. As a test I added a similar page to one of my other sites and it ranks fine. I've checked webmaster tools and there is nothing of note there. I'm not really sure what to do at this stage. Any advice would me much appreciated!

Why is a site no longer being indexed by Google after HTTPS switch?
A client of ours recently had a new site built and made the switch to HTTPS. We made sure to redirect all of the HTTP pages to HTTPS and submitted a new sitemap to Google. GWT says the sitemap was submitted successfully but only 4 pages have been indexed where there should be over 2000. This has led to a plummet of organic traffic and we can't find the issue. Has anyone else had issues/success with doing a HTTPS switch that knows how to fix this problem?

Merging 11 community sites into 1 regional site
I am merging 11 real estate community sites into 1 regional site and don't really know what type of redirect should I use for the homepage?, for instance: www.homepage.com redirect to www.regionalsite.com/community-page Should I 301 this redirect? If yes, how could I 301 redirect a homepage to an internal page in my new site? Cheers 🙂

Bing still not listing my site after 3 weeks, Google ranks very very low
I am scared that somehow the search engines are penalizing me for something, but I don't know what. The site can be found at http://www.hypnotherapy-guide.com It is a business directory/advice/guide site listing a lot of hypnotherapists (9000). Is it possible that such a large site popping up over night is flagged by the SE as spam? I don't know what I am doing wrong.

On-site links
Hi everybody, There's a lot of information about getting sitewide backlinks, but so few about on-site optimization. Is there a maximum of links to put on a page ? Is there a maximum of link that a page should receive ? etc ... ? So, what is the optimal strategy ? And I'm only concerned about on-page and on-site link, not backlinks commming from other sites. Thanks
