Skip indexing the search pages
-
Hi,
I want all such search pages skipped from indexing
So i have this in robots.txt (Disallow: /search/)
Now any posts that start with search are being blocked and in Google i see this message
A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more.
How can i handle this and also how can i find all URL's that Google is blocking from showing
Thanks

Sure - you have urls that are being blocked by robots - you have this line in your robots.txt -
Disallow: /questions/search
It is thus preventing urls from within that folder, questions, which start with the word search from being crawled. What are you trying to accomplish with this block? If it's the folder search, within questions, it should be /questions/search/.
And the other warning is telling you these pages take a long time to load - check your server or these individual pages and see why that is taking so long.

As Saijo said above, the meta robots noindex tag is the way to go. When you block a folder via robots.txt, you prevent Google from visiting and crawling that folder and any content within it. If Google has already crawled the content, they won't remove the content from their index just if you block it with robots.txt. The old version they have of the page will be stored and saved in their index, and they just won't be able to show you an updated snippet of the page due to the robots.txt block.
To remove the pages from the index completely, you can do one of 2 things -
- in webmaster tools, go to the url removal section, and remove that folder from the index - this will only work when it's blocked via robots.txt
- you can add a meta robots noindex tag to the pages/page template, and remove the robots.txt block - you need to remove the robots.txt block so the search engines can recrawl the pages, see the meta robots directive, and follow the noindex guide to remove the page.
In general, I would recommend using the meta robots noindex directive over the robots.txt, because it should work for all search engines, and you won't have to go into webmaster tools for each one. You also will ensure that you don't accidentally block other urls.
From your example above, if you just blocked the folder /search/, a page that includes the word search in the url but isn't in the blocked folder shouldn't be blocked from the search engines because of that line - I would check in webmaster tools the robots.txt section, because it doesn't look to me, based on your robots.txt file, that any url with search in it should be blocked.
Good luck,
Mark

To Block search pages from the index you can try adding the META NOINDEX tag in the head section of the search pages

Spam pages being redirected to 404s but sill indexed
Client had a website that was hacked about a year ago. Hackers went in and added a bunch of spam landing pages for various products. This was before the site had installed an SSL certificate. After the hack, the site was purged of the hacked pages and and SLL certificate was implemented. Part of that process involved setting up a rewrite that redirects http pages to the https versions. The trouble is that the spam pages are still being indexed by Google, even months later. If I do a site: search I still see all of those spam pages come up before most of the key "real" landing pages. The thing is, the listing on the SERP are to the http versions, so they're redirecting to the https version before serving a 404. Is there any way I can fix this without removing the rewrite rule?

Can Title Tag be seen in the page source, but not seen by search engines?
This is a follow up question derived from a previous question I posted - http://moz.com/community/q/does-title-tag-location-in-a-page-s-source-code-matter There have been several reputable crawl tools used on our (including Moz) site that state we are missing title tags on may pages. One such page is http://www.paintball-online.com/Paintball-Guns-And-Markers-0Y.aspx I can see the title tag on line 238 of the page source. I find it unlikely that there is an issue with the crawl tools. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Nick

How do I fix issue regarding near duplicate pages on website associated to city OR local pages?
I am working on one e-commerce website where we have added 300+ pages to target different local cities in USA. We have added quite different paragraphs on 100+ pages to remove internal duplicate issue and save our website from Panda penalty. You can visit following page to know more about it. And, We have added unique paragraphs on few pages. But, I have big concerns with other elements which are available on page like Banner Gallery, Front Banner, Tool and few other attributes which are commonly available on each pages exclude 4 to 5 sentence paragraph. I have compiled one XML sitemap with all local pages and submitted to Google webmaster tools since 1st June 2013. But, I can see only 1 indexed page by Google on Google webmaster tools. http://www.bannerbuzz.com/local http://www.bannerbuzz.com/local/US/Alabama/Vinyl-Banners http://www.bannerbuzz.com/local/MO/Kansas-City/Vinyl-Banners and so on... Can anyone suggest me best solution for it?

High number of Duplicate Page titles and Content related to index.php
It appears that every page on our site (www.bridgewinners.com) also creates a version of itself with a suffix. This results in Seomoz indicating that there are thousands of duplicate titles and content. 1. Does this matter? If so, how much? 2. How do I eliminate this (we are using joomla)? Thanks.
